GinnyLyn
I still maintain that the SEAL (or was it SEEL?) night was a very scary night indeed. o_O But one of the best, too--that was the night I found out I was quite dedicated to the Boards. Go me. Things are quite better, a lot more organized. I agree with that. *throws party for all hard working staff* We love you guys! And, no, that was not shameless. James
For me it was just a matter of needing to sort things out quickly. Even though things were moving rapidly, I got the sense that those members that were actually online (or at least some of them) didn't notice much. Some people were responding to the spam threads with the usual "you're not allowed to spam here and this will be closed". lol Funnily enough, it was only when I closed the boards down entirely that people started saying "wait a minute, what's going on here?" I don't know if kuji or Justin were sending out any information about specifically what was going on though, so I guess I have no way of knowing what people were hearing on the night.

Hehe...I guess that's because I'm always being asked about it by someone. But we might as well use this thread to clear up OB's history once and for all -- then we can always give people a link if they ask. lol
Justin
Heh, James, I have to correct you. Actually, Shinji DID remove your administrative capabilites, as I remember. He just dind't delete your account, making it easier to get you your control back, whenever I finally got in touch with you. Heh, those were the days. I think we've always said that OtakuBoards has one of the most colorful histories of any online forum. But, indeed. There was no elaborate hacking. Shinji just used what he had to cause a little havoc. James, kuja, and myself just sat up all night and tried to fix things. There were a couple other, besides us three. But overall, the rest is just a myth. -Justin
Circ
All of that happened in one night? Woah... (Or is it a week... I think I missed a part.)
James
Yeah, I had forgotten about that. You're right, Justin. In reality the whole thing only lasted a couple of hours. But it's quite interesting to look back on it; it was pretty memorable. In a way though, I look back on it very fondly because at that time there was a big outburst of support for the boards. And when we got v3 going a few days later, I was amazed at how excited people were and how happy they were. It was nice to have that support. I expect it would be pretty emotional if OB had to shut down forever at some point.
Justin
I don't know everyone so well now, but if had shut down then, some jokers would've lost their lives. Sad, but true. We're just THAT good here. ;) -Justin
Circ
Hard core members would probably built up a replacement forum. I know of some forums who did it, though only said Hardcore remained to built up the new community.
James
That's true. There are a lot of member-created forums around; one of those would probably have been a kind of replacement. Or I might have gone and done something independently. Who knows.
Guest Zeh
It's funny now that a look back and see OB back in it's EZ board state. Look how far we've come? James, i doubt OB's gonna have to stop running soon, and if it ever did, we'd all look to you to make us atleast some sort of replacment.
Guest cloricus
Thanks for telling that story James, nice to hear a version of events that I can believe. Juu
Yay! I finally got it now. ^^ I didn't know all that happened. I just thought Shinji took over, and closed it. oO; *suddenly feels very, very new-ish* Something quite similar happened at TheOtaku chat a few months ago, but it was taken care of. That gave us a chance to refresh the whole op list, and re-write the topic, so the rules were included again. Soo, in a way, it was actually good in some ways. ^_^;
GinnyLyn
I remember staying up late that night the Boards were being torn down. I dunno if I did anything constructive, besides rallying peeps together, keeping spirits up. After awhile, things were fixed. Let us never rate each other again. :bluesweat

zidane11
I like version one because it helped me beat my zelda game which is how I found this place and I learned what spam was. Here is what some of my posts were like. Yeah!!!!!!!!!!! I reached 500 posts!!!! aldjfalkdjflajfajfal. I just felt like typing something. I'm bored, what about you? And of course there were always more posts that had a point to them but every now and then I would have one of those. Moderation? Oh yeah, that was when you wanted to change a post just for fun. Shinobi
This is really cool, reading this whole thread...although i don;t even know what version i registered in! o_O;; I think it was V3, but i am not sure at all. Oh well, this is a great thread, i had the "Drft away" stage of OB which many mebers seems to get once in a while, but i think this has made me feel how tight this community is, and revamped me to stay and not drift away for a while. TheShinje
I think this forum deserves an ub3r cookie for having such a colourful history ^_^ From what I've been reading over a year or so here, I thouyght that Shinji had been an Administrator from the start and just set everything up so he had total control. Then, when things went sour, he started pulling the boards down.... Way off hay? Anyway, I just want to clear up if it is such a good idea that I change my name to Shinji? I don't want peeps associating me with this incident, seen as this was way befor my time.

Justin
None like that. There was a time when moderation of the boards wasn't exactly par, though. In that time, post quality of the overall majority was terrible, what we now consider spam was the status quo, and there was a stream of spammers and flamers that seemed endless. It had its perks, though. Like those cool little ranking stars. Though, few would know them, I'd like to see the old ranks revived. The ones beside 'No Life'. Though, that one is strangely enough the coolest. -Justin

I'm not sure about everyone else though. O and 2v was probably my favorite, very fun, you could get away with anything. But it's also where I learned how to post with out pissing off everybody. It was after my fight with Killer Pikachu about how I thought the pokemon T.V. show was stupid. Back then I would just go a pick fights with people about that. Ah, the memories. Guest Hikaru Ichijyo
I just realized...either that or I'm going blind I never posted in this thread...>.> I guess the reason being that at the time I wasn't around long enough to be able to have insight on this. Anyway...I guess my favorite Version would be the end of V4 going into the beginning of V5, since that's when I joined up and back then I had a much more active role..so things seemed better. O.o and sadly I'm kind of feeling old now not sure if I should credit that to the fact that I've been here for 3 or 4 versions or the fact that...versions these days happen in multitudes. Questions like these boggle the mind.
SaiyanPrincessX
Originally posted by James I might as well explain, so that you don't get a distorted story. Basically, Shinji (who is a member here now, but rarely posts) was a staff member back in the day. Somehow he managed to get Adam's password (not that it was hard to guess -- I gave Adam a virtual slap on the wrist for that) and took over Adam's account. He made himself an Administrator and made several of his friends Administrators. And then, as you can imagine, the boards went to hell. Spam was everywhere, stuff was deleted, people's accounts were messed up, signatures were edited...you name it, they did it. I managed to stop Shinji and a few others in time (they were stupid -- they never took away my Admin capabilities  ), but it was like a chain reaction...people kept adding other people as Administrators. So it became a mob mentality, you know? Anyway, that's essentially what happened. All these other tales of elaborate hacking and such are bogus. Most people don't know what happened. And most people weren't there at the time. It happened late at night and only very few people were around. Very few. So that's the basic story. And, partially as a result of this, we moved to Virtual Bulletin (we were formerly on UBB) and we moved to v3. So here we are now, with over 4,000 members. Had we not had to "rebuild", I think we might have 6,000 - 7,000 members. But in a way it was a good thing, because it gave us the opportunity to rethink security and to reconsider the operation of the site. I think v6 is our most accomplished version, because we've been able to actually add more than one skin (finally) and we have a much more organized staff structure. There are still plenty of things I'd like to do, of course. And some of my own ideas and goals are limited by the availability of technical staff. Even those that I have are very busy themselves, so it's hard to find someone who is dedicated to OB on a constant basis. But, not withstanding those issues, I don't know where this site will go in the future. For once, I really don't have any longterm plans for OB. I'm happy with where we are. Anything we add now would just be peripheral in nature (not that we won't add anything, of course). So, for the most part, I'm happy to stay on v6 (and various modifications of it) until the next big forum technology is available; either Virtual Bulletin 3 or something entirely different.
When I came on the next day and saw all of the spam ect I couldn't believe it. I remember it so well. Its strange to look back at it all. It wasn't really that long ago but yet it was. OB is really what got me interested in forums in the first place and its still my favorite boards. OB truelly does have a colorfull history, and still is. ^_^
