Break
Today the GCN came out in the UK (yay!) and yesterday the price was £170, but today it was slashed in price to £129! And you can get a deal, £185 for the GCN, controller and any game, which is a very good deal considering that the PS2 and X-Box are £199, just for the console. Was the GCN slashed in price like this in the USA too, just curious.
Cecil
Last time I checked no, but I'm a special case. I live in the uk but own an american everything except a house. Don't ask me why because if I told you I would have to kill you, but I'm going back to the states on June 9th (Yay for me). Anyways I still think it's $200 for console and a single controller. *edit* Now that I do the math I think 129pounds is just a little less than $200. So its equal, after the price cut at least. First of all, how could the GameCube come out today but yesterday it was £170? Why would they take off £40 so early? And why would they already have a deal, a great one at that? Anyway, I am glad that all of you Englanders out there can finally see what all of the fuss is about in America. You can play GameCube for yourself and judge it on it's best features. I know you will not be let down, and I advise you to buy it if possible. But I don't want to ruin it for you. Go out and try it now! :blah:
Desbreko
Well, I think I read that the suggested retail price for a GCN over there was £130. But, the stores can charge what they want, so they may have been charging more than the suggested retail price, and then decided to bring it down. But yeah, in the US the system by itself costs $200, and PS2 and X-box are both $300. So yeah, it's not much of a surprise that you can get the system, a game, and an extra controller for less than the price of the PS2 or the X-box. You can get that in the US, too. The system, game, and extra controller comes out to about $285 all total. And sometimes you can find the controllers for a bit cheaper than $35, and now some games are dropping down even to $30, from $50.
Fall
Maybe they sold it for more, than slashed the price, so customers thought that it was a great deal? That could've happened.... Just curious, what game do you plan to get?

Solid Snake, what I mean is before the day it came out, it was going to be £170, but when it was released the next day, the price was cut straight away to £129.. Just find it strange..

I would have to go with what Desbreko said about how stores may charge more than the suggested retail price. They probably changed it at the last second when they reliezed either what the real price would be, or that complaints would be made. Whatever it was, it worked, and people like you are amazed at the lowered price, not looking to see that the price is just normal. It's stuff like this that makes more people want to buy things- jack up the price before the release, and bring it down when it finally is released. Heh, good marketing. :blah:
Red
The GameCube price cut in England was announced by Nintendo a week before it's launch, to bring it in line with the prices in America and other European countries.

That could've happened....
Heh, nah. This is what's known as a good, old-fashioned "price war". Microsoft (in Australia, at least) realized that the Xbox was unsuccessful. So it cut the price by a cool $300. Nintendo realized that the GameCube would no longer have the price advantage, so it reacted by cutting its price and subsequently undercutting the Xbox retail price. I don't think Microsoft had expected Nintendo to be so aggressive...but Nintendo has a history of aggressively defending its market position.

A little while after that is when I bought my N64. Price wars are great for the consumer, heheh.
