Transtic Nerve
In the sense on speaking, Japanese and Chinese aren't that bad. If you are talking about writing it, I'd say it's pretty difficult... Not only do you have to learn Hiragana and Katakana, which is about... 70 characters for each... thats about 140 total.... and then, above all that you have an average of about 200 Kanji to learn.... I'd say thats kinda difficult...
Kent
i do agree that all of these languages are hard. i would also like to point out that english has an unestimatable amount of ( " ? ,)these types of symbols. how many rules and variations? but also more importantly is the speech of it. its not like all of the language can really be expressed by charectors on a computer screen. (that goes for all languages) even with that said, i have a feeling that the trivial knowledge side of me says english is technical one of the most difficult languages in the world

Kent
in english you use letter to form sounds. though there are not many letters there truly is a technical difficulty that does not exist in most languages. one thing that is important is that anyone here who speaks a language that is considered one of the romance languages, has a disadvantage in their view point. all other romance languages will seem easy to understand, where as a language unrelated such as arabic or japanese or hebrew, sounds just about as hard as they get. its only opinions though, you own language is always the easiest. I suppose, since they are just additions to already existing symbols they aren't much different, but still, you have to learn them... You'll have to excuse my typo... I meant 2000 not 200 Kanji.... thats on average...
Cecil
I havn't read all the posts so don't blame me If I say something weird. Anyways, I have to say Spansh is easy! I used to speak it better than english, also my dad says he used to be able to type faster in spanish than in english. Ok the thoughest language to learn, from what I heard would be Navajo. We used it in world war 2 for a bunch of codes and for years the japenese could not crack it, I think it took them longer than it took us to crack the enigma (another world war 2 code). If I remember right I think that they tried to make a unified european language but it wasn't a popular idea. Could anybody confirm this? If it's true what was it called? Kent
i hate to say it but i think the fasination with the eastren half of the whole has made some of us form different opinions. im fasinated and love anime, philosphy and religion from the east. im just not letting that love skew my view. there really is alot to deal with in english. most of us still dont know it all. none the less the rules. like all the words that change with being plural, but in a weird way, not just an s, but say.... wifes, wives. goose, geese. i still say english. and navajo is a good one. most original suggestion yet. and it was a real code. home boy is right. dont know about the unified euro language. course, they got that euro dollar. Defcon5
Originally posted by Transtic Nerve Apparently English is for you too... Japanese is actually fairly easy... English woul dhave to be the hardest language to learn... I think we are the only country to take our own langaugae classes for at least till we graduate high school.... by that time, the Japanese have already learned English themselves....
Well then i'm glad I speak it already.
MysticBabe
GREEK! thats hard. my spanish teacher married a greek guy that used to actually live in greece, and she read off their alphabit to us.  enough said. lol
wrist cutter
If you think Japanese or Chinese is hard to learn you must be a retard. I've dabbled a bit in four other languages and by far the easiest for me was Japanese. I found French the hardest. Japanese writing isn't hard, it's just big and intimidating. Persistance and repetition are all you need though and Japanese is a piece of cake.
Sandy
Yo, guys! You forgot my native language, Finnish!!! It's officially one of the hardest languages on earth: Hei kaikki, täällä luuraa Sage, kaikkien kaveri, ja täytyy vain sanoa että Otakuboards on paras!!! (Try to figure out that!) Spanish is very easy, especially when compared to french. You can't really say that some language is difficult just because it has thousands of letters, coz japanese is actually quite easy, just all the alphabetes mess things up. Well, jatkakaa keskustelua, olkaa hyvät, or please continue disgussion.
Lady Macaiodh
i dunno... i think any language is easy to learn if you grew up hearing it. for example, when i went to spain, i found myself picking up the language right away. i guess it depends on the environment. adapt youself to a culture & you'll pick up the lingo pretty easily.
Originally posted by wrist cutter If you think Japanese or Chinese is hard to learn you must be a retard. SSJ4BROLLI
wrist cutter you're an idiot. just because something is easy for you doesn't mean that it's easy for others. i found french quite easy. i'm half korean and i think that chinese and japanese would be hard to learn with all the characters. if anyone is a retard you are. everyone knows that if you practice something that you get better at it. Char!
.....Oookay, this topic sure is overstaying its welcome. Mods! As for the whole language thing, it's definitely gotta be either English or American. Oh yeah, there's a difference. And if one must direct all insults to someone, send 'em my way. I could care less, and at least you angry peopel will feel better. eleanor
Okay, okay, so American IS the hardest, but have you ever heard of KoReAn?!?!?!? I'm Korean my self (still born in the U.S. my mom and dad were born in Korea) and IT'S STILL SO FREAKIN HARD!!!!!!!!!!! You know, I got a 68 on my last test and that the second highest. Thats right, I have to go to a Korean school on Saturday. SOHARDSOHARDSOHARDSOHARDSOHARD!!!!! Anyways, Spanish id pretty easy for me, but French was hard. Japanese and Chinese? My mom is a teacher at the Korean School and she knows Japanese and Chinese perfectly. (She's always going on about how hard they had to work in Korea. They went to school at night, even the elementary kids, and teachers could hit children for no reason back then and not get into much trouble. Scary.) She says Korean is a lot harder, and I believe her.

Stop talking out of your ***. As I said in my post, the characters just seem hard because there are many. it's something you get used to, it doesn't mean it's hard because there are a lot of them. Read my damn post before you go insulting me about it. And that last quote you said was exactly my point. People just want to instantly know kanji without practicing it but it isn't going to happen. You do have to work a little to know kanji, but it isn't really thinking, just memorizing. Kanji just intimidates people, but it isn't hard. Oh, and might I add, the Chinese recently made their writing system a bit easier, reducing the number of symbols to 255 - a little over half of the characters we English speaking people know (and don't say we only have 26).
