;) Well this topic has been quite a bit overdone, however Akira happens to be a really great classic that any fan of anime must see in their lifetime at least once. I for one enjoy Akira, this topic is a little flimsy maybe if you add a better thesis to this thread I will consider letting it stay open!;)

I liked it a lot, especially Tetsuo. The first thing I would do if I got psychic powers would be to make a cape for myself. btw I heard it's a good movie to show to people that haven't seen anime before, does anyone know why?

I have seen it many times and infact I have the special addition DVD. I watch it on a monthly basis and I love it so much. My favorite part was the one were they are riding through the city just because of how excellent it was. The animation was stunning and the highest amount of detail went into everything up to lights on buildings far in the backround it shows what an be achived in anime. I believe it is a good anime to show to people who have not seen anime before because of how great it is and it is one of the best ever so it show the person the top of the field their first time making them want more.

I saw it when I was little (vampire Hunter D too), and I don't really remember them much (I was 7 or 8), but when I watched both of them again later on I really liked them. Akira would be a good first-time anime because it doesn't focus only on comedy or romance, or just all blood and guts. I don't know it really seems much more professional and like a full-length movie. My favorite part is probably when he's in the hospital room and those creepy teddy bear things are sloshing around. The part where he flies up and takes out the satellite is pretty freaking cool as well. I don't think Akira is hyped up enough, I saw Ghost in the Shell because I heard it was good and when I saw it was from the creator of Akira or whatever I had hope, but I was severely disappointed. =\

See Akira, it's a very cool anime. The story line is a little bit complicated, but other than that its very cool.

A thumbs up from Kaio for Akira

Well, have both movies now, and I like Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust waaaaaaay better. Mainly because I only got halfway through Akira, cuz it got boring and annoying. Maybe the second half is better though...

I myself like Akira more than VHD or VHD:Bloodlust (which is better than VHD IMO). But i am sure if you ask others on the board you'll get much of the same answer BlueGender here has. But it is so hard to compare the two, one is based on horror while the other is based on Science Fiction. Akira you have to watch multiple times before actually understanding the plot, but with the new special editions out (i mysefl have the tin casing) that have the new dub, you only need to watch em once to get the full emotion from the film. While i say i like Akira better, by all means it doesn't mean i think VHD and VHD:Bloodlust suck, because they both rule which i why i own both of em on DVD. Now if the question at hand was which one has the better sound i'd deffinately have to go with VHD:B because the sound in that movie truly kicks. As for why people think Akira is a good anime to start new people off with... i do believe this to be true because not only did i start off with Akira but also because people are used to associating animation with kid stuff. So when they see Akira with the gore, nudity, and the little bit of language they realize that animation isn't just for kids to enjoy (and i am not saying that those of us, i included, that enjoy cartoon shows shouldn't) but for adults too. Anyway, i just felt i should add my opinion on the subject matter

I rented Akira the movie, and personally, I wasn't that impressed. I wouldn't use it as a movie for newbie anime fans. I'm not sure why I didn't like it that much......the plot got a bit dull....I mean, the movie was ok, but nothing too great.

yes i also feel that akira is one of the best.
but it is not for newbie anime fans.
infact, the more i think of it, the more i realize that someone who rented and just watched it once or something like that, could never get the true emotion of the film, none the less the plot. (run on sentence)

This was my first anime movie. I honestly don't remember what i thought after it wa finished, but i do know i like it now. The only thing i find wrong about the movie is the dub on the first Akira for Americans, it was to confusing. But now that they have a better plot in the SE DVD it's easier to udnerstand. While this isn't my favorite it does rank on my top 5 favorite anime, about 3 or so. You really need to watch it more then once to actually get a full understanding of the movie.

I haven't seen the other film, but Aries you definitely need to see all of Akira, it gets a whole lot better! I actually understood Akira the first time I watched it (but this was after I thought long and hard about the movie after it finished) It's a cool anime, yeah there was loads of hype, but I still reckon it's cool.

Akira was a great movie, and was one of my first anime/mangas...but all I remember was selling it to Sephiroth for a mere 15 pounds....what was I thinking?

I find it hard to believe that it cost the most money, more than any other anime, to make....the effects werent that good, they were almost normal, but we are talking 1995.

Great story line though, very advanced.
