Actually we are talking 1987 haha :).

I don't think anyone realizes how old this movie is by animation standards. It's hardly overrated if you look at what it came out next to at the time. It still stands it's own against newer anime in terms of story and animation. You'd appreciate the anime a lot more if you read the manga though... it's far better. After reading it, I'm surprised they were even able to make a good movie out of it in the first place.

Whoa, 1987! I couldve sworn that I read 1995 somewhere! Now I see everything, it does look like one of those anime movies which was made today. I read the Manga and I see what you mean, Spider man came out as a comic originally which I think are the best type of spiderman stories, the films were not as good as expected to be (the special effects were awesome though), even though they were comic based. I guess we were just lucky that we saw a good movie which derived from a type of comic book.

1995 is the year Manga Entertainment published it and released it on OAV, idiot, not the year it was created

Ok, this seems like a good place to post...

http://www.theotaku.com/akira/clowns.shtml

I've just finished reading this and I'd like to give my own opinion as to the significance of the clowns...

I think the author was right at the end of his article in saying that they are just another bike gang. That's precisely what they are.

Kandeda's bunch are pretty pathetic when all is said and done. They ride around the streets at night looking for trouble. We only like them because we know them. We feel an affinity for them so by default, the clowns become bad guys, but really they're probably no worse then Kaneda's gang.

As to why they're there - I think it's basically a means for providing a way of showing how Kaneda's gang gel and get on and (perhaps more importantly) to show the more dark nature in Tetsuo's character. It sets us up for what we are going to see later on in the film when he finally gets the power he craves.

I don't really think it's for anything more than that. Plus they do provide quite an exciting way to get introduced to all the main characters^^

You're new, and perhaps you havn't read the rules, but I'd appreciate it if you didn't bring up such old threads when we have a much newer one about basically the same thing. Please refer here. Thanks!
