Adam
Sweet! Sony slashed the price of its PS2 by a whopping $100. It now only costs $199. But that's not all... What effect will this have on the Xbox and GameCube? My projections: Xbox Microsoft will simply roll over and die if they keep their console priced $100 more than the PS2. My guess is they will match the PS2's price. That or, less likely, they will reduce to $249.99. GameCube One of the GameCube's biggest advantages is that it was priced $100 below the competition. With this advantage gone, Nintendo will absolutely reduce the console's price (and Nintendo can afford to do this greatly because of its lucrative software profits). My estimate is that the GameCube will move down all the way to $99 or, at absolute worst, $149.99. Sweetness! Thank you Sony! To digress into business speak. The video game industry is a 3-way oligopoly. This means that the price of products changes very slowly but when they do change, when they are changed by even 1 company, the other two must quickly respond lest they get devastated. (Anyone remember when the Saturn was killing the PlayStation in sales and Sony cut its price and Sega obstinately kept their Saturn the same price?) -Adam
Flash
Sweet! I'll have to buy myself an NTSC PS2 While I'm in the US, heh..
ZeroBlade
Huh?!? In the USA? Took sony long enough. Good predictions. I agree with you
VP-Master
Yep and that's not all. The official PS2 8MB mem card and Dual Shock 2 Control Pad both originally priced at $34.99 will now be $24.99 for a regular price. I don't know about the multi-tap or the other PS2 add-ons but I hope they go down too. Pretty sweet prices.
James
Hm, 'bout time Sony cut its price in the USA. The console's price was cut at least twice since launch here in Australia. Sounds good. :)
Guest Solid Snake
This was deffinitely a great marketing move on Sony's part, putting it at nearly above the competition with a low price but still DVD access. I knew it was only a matter of time, making their early release (in comparision to GameCube and Xbox) well worth it. It is a pity that I already own one or I would go out and buy one now. However good this is on Sony's part, sir, I doubt other platforms will do the same. With GameCube having their company and games to back them up, it may be done, but only by a short amount. However, due to the lack of units sold, and because of their bulgy and expensive hardware, it's probable that the price will stay the same for XBox. Microsoft will want to continue regaining the money they have not yet made, keeping the price high, and I don't blame them. I don't think it's necessarily the price that discourages gamers, it's what they see in the system that would make them decide whether or not to buy it. Besides their financial support, I highly doubt that Microsoft will get very far on their gaming platform, with a too-large system, and games that could be a lot better. What makes Sony's newest system any better? For starters, it was due for the price change, it's been around for over a year. Plus, who could forget the game library, which is nearly overflowing with some of the greatest titles, not to mention the fact that it isn't too big, giving way to it's own LCD screen later this year? I thank you for informing us on this news, Adam, and may this be a great day for you and all Playstation lovers out there. :blah:
James
I think MS will cut the price of Xbox again. Why? Because they can afford it. Microsoft don't expect to make money on Xbox hardware -- no company expects to make money on hardware. Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft are all making losses on their hardware. Money is made on software sales. And obviously, if you have more consoles out there, you have more software sales. So it is within Microsoft's interest to cut the Xbox's price as much as it can...to the point where it can realistically absorb the costs. Still, Xbox can't touch PS2. It's way too far infront. And GameCube is edging infront in the USA as well now...so Microsoft is going to have to really push the software angle a lot more. Or in other words, they need more exclusive, good games...it's the only way to push the Xbox ahead.

Charles
Originally posted by Solid Snake I highly doubt that Microsoft will get very far on their gaming platform, with a too-large system, and games that could be a lot better. :blah:
Eh, I actually like Microsofts' first party games. Already released titles, such as Halo, Project Gotham Racing and Rallisport Challenge are great. Their sports franchises could use some work, but definitely show potential. Future releases, such as Brute Force, MechAssault and Project Ego are a step in the right direction as well. I think I know what you mean though. Microsofts' third parties are kinda weak. I remember reading an article on the system in which Microsoft said they have a policy on games. It was something like, "No ports, no patches, no sh_t." Microsoft claimed to have a review board that demanded that any PS2 or PC games coming to Xbox must be jazzed up to take advantage of the more powerful hardware. After seeing some things released on the system, I wonder. When it all comes down to it, I feel that the reduction of hardware costs are important, but online gaming will be the next arena where the companies will be taking shots at one another. We'll probably see very competitive ISP deals and Microsoft will no doubt flaunt its broadband capabilities and built-in hard drive. Anyway, you are correct about the "too-large system." But, I think that takes a back seat, so to speak, on American shores to the uncomfortable controller. Americans are ususally fascinated with big things. Look at all those people who have huge entertainment centers. But, the controller is a problem, not only because of size, but because of button layout, and Microsoft should concentrate on advertising their new Controller-S. Back on track here, by lowering its price, Sony is putting the heat on Nintendo and Microsoft. Sony launched its console long before the competition did and they have the benefit of selling it for its full price for over a year now. Presently, they're just sweeping up gamers who had been holding onto their PSX's, waiting for a price drop. It actually makes sense that they would do this now, seeing as how they have released a "Greatest Hits" collection. Now, consumers can pick up a PS2 for $199 and some great titles for low prices.

Just another point deducted to my "wait til the Xbox is good enough to buy." score board.
Adam
This is so funny, go to GameStop.com. The price of the Xbox has ALREADY fallen to $199. So funny - It's a perfect case example of an economic price war that massively hurt all the companies involved but hugely affected the consumer. This is massive - I wonder how Nintendo will react. -Adam
ZeroBlade
Nintendo just reduced the gamecube price to $150 now, as well as their controllers. Thats what they did Adam :-)
