I don't know, it just bothers me a little, but I had to post this. Doesn't it just bother you sometimes how people who watch DBZ think they are just the biggest anime fans and just because they are into DBZ they know so much? Now I'm not trying to step on anyone's toes because I watch the show sometimes too (when I had cable) but I just hate the way that that show dominates America's vision of what anime is...

it makes me sick when ppl who think they're all cool and whatnot are really just a bunch of idiots. I guess that fits this case somewhat, lol. so yeah, it drives me insane. of course, when I try to tell them about an anime that's twice as good as DBZ, or at least as good, they're not interested ....

I complete agree with you QA, but some good does come out of anime on american television. Wiithout pokemon there is no way as many shops would carry anime as they do today, and thanks to Gundam Wing many people realized that there is a market for slightly more mature anime. It does bug me that people call themselves "Otakus" when all they have seen is a few episodes of DBZ, but I realize that I was once exactly like them. Over time I was able to watch more and more series, so now I can safely say that I am somewhat educated on the subject of anime.

Whenever a DBZ fan tells you that they are an expert on anime, just ask them about some of the series you have watched, and laugh as they struggle to figure out what you are talking about.

im a dbz nut and i know what your saying.
i was into anime long before i got into dbz so i understand.
i dont think dbz go out of their way to do that, but they are with out a doubt, some ignorant anime fans when they act like its the only thing worth watching.
none the less, when they act like its the best anime "style".
i really do love dbz, but its not all that anitomicly correct.
anime like cb and akira have the correct proportions of a humans body, or atleast a better one.
there are tons of animes out there and dbz is just one more.
most people dont even realize that there are plenty of animes with just as much story and just as much action.
i still say dbz rules. i just woulnt say its the absolute best.

I agree with you wholeheartedly QA. My little cousin is just like that, and when I try to tell her about other anime, she just ignores me. She thinks she's a huge anime fan, when all she watches is dubbed DBZ. I really grow tired of the Dragonball series. It is waaay to overrated, and it is not even near the "greatest anime there is" any true anime fan would know that. And I know I am not an otaku, not nearly, but I do know that DBZ comes no where in comparison with other things like Evangelion and Vampire Hunter D.

Ok, I'm rambling now, so I'm gonna go ;)

Yes in certain ways it does bother me that dbz fans watch the show and then think they are an otaku overnight which is not the case! But hopefully people will learn to move on from watching only stuff on toonami and dbz, and try more mature animes, like eva, macross, and other great classics as well as the obscure ones!;)

It doesn't really bother me that much, because I mostly understand the show. But when they keep rembling on about the same thing over and over, THAT bothers me alot....

Though it doesn't really dominate here, ANYMORE.... it did, but not much anymore.

yes, it does tick me off when these fools think they are anime guru's just because they watch dbz, however, say to them to name one anime title besides what cartoon network shows, and besides akira or street fighter and believe me, they will become speechless....

Well I know that this has always bothered me, almost like a little monkey on my back that is growing bigger and bigger until it is a raging monster. Like a few years ago, Media Play used to carry the BIGGEST selection of anime, but then over the years, their assortment dwindled. Now they have like a whole shelf and a half (which consists of like 7 or so mini shelves) of nothing but DBZ and then just 2 or 3 shelves for other anime. And then I was looking up a series on their website before I went shopping the other day and I looked up the top 20 selling anime tapes and 17 out of 20 were different volumes of DBZ. It's so ridiculous. But I'm glad so many people frickin agree with me. It just bothers me so bad. And it's not even like DBZ is some really awesome SHOW, because it's REDUNDANT...the same stuff OVER and OVER...I just wish it's popularity would sort of die out....*sighs heavily*

I hate it when people think they're major anime fans when they've only seen DBZ. But I think it's really bad when DBZ gives anime a bad name. I mean, a lot of people think DBZ is really stupid, and frequently, people just associate all anime and DBZ and assume it's all the same. But you know what they say when you assume. ^^ Yes, DBZ is a good CN show, targeted mostly at the little boys who will go out and buy all the merchandise and action figures (not that there's anything wrong with that!). It's also good because some people watch DBZ, and then go past it for better anime that maybe isn't *gasp* on networks. ^^

I don't want anime in America to be mirrored as nothing but a bunch of brutes who eats beans to get stronger and see who can beat the snot out of each other or a bunch of little kids with monster sidekicks that NEVER fail no matter what they do because they always BELIEVE! Do you know what I'm saying?

The thing that really bothers me the most about this dbz craze is that the show is just so old, DB, DBZ, and DBGT are practicially 12-14 years old already in Japan! Whenever someone tells me I can't wait to see the "new" dbz episodes I just roll my eyes like so!

Its about time these psuedo anime fans that are still hung up on an anime series that is 12 years old, and lacking plot, mature and watch better anime series out there! I'm not saying I hate dbz but to me its really old news! ;)

Wise words! I am going to print that and show it to my cousin and brother, because they drive me crazy.

And DBZ is very old to me too. It used to be cool, but I have moved on, and I am almost to the point of disliking it because it is so overrated, and lacks plot SO much, that it's almost the same exact thing over and over again. Example:

There is always a new enemy, more feared than the last one. Every saga, someone goes up in power (drastically)
The moves get even moooore boring.
Last, but not least (well maybe it is): They always somehow manage to overcome the enemy by sacrifice, or becoming a new SSJ level. I don't dislike DBZ yet, and it is still fun to watch every now and then. But come on...

But at the same time everyone needs to remember that this is one of the few anime shows that have hit the mainstream. If American kids were exposed to an anime series about someone who fights villains with a Q-Tip it would still manage to be extremely popular. I am saying that DBZ is a bad show, but it doesn't hold a candle to some of the other series out there.

Just remember that you are more lucky to be exposed to so much anime, while others are stuck with crap like Hamtaro.

Well, I can agree with that Shyguy, but still...I can't get over how everyone just LOVES DBZ. I'll never understand...It's not even interesting...

And they eat BEANS to get stronger when they feel weakened! And like someone said earlier, it's always the same thing...there's this big huge NEW enemy who is so strong that no one can defeat him, but he's ALWAYS defeated anyway....

I think it's fine if you like DBZ. I mean, what's wrong with watching all different types of genres? Nothing. Except that these major DBZ fans don't like anything else. It's all they talk about, and it's the only anime they watch, and then they name themselves Anime genius of the world. I mean, like Dark Elf said, what's wrong with Tenchi or Outlaw star? They're netowrk shows, and they're a whole lot better than DBZ. They actually have a plot, but why aren't they anywhere near as popular as DBZ? Now I've put myself in the same train of thought as Queen Asuka.....Why is DBZ so popular? What makes all those legions of fans? And why is it so entertaining to watch a couple of brutes throwing energy blasts at each other......stange....it suddenly really did just hit me.......huh.

That's true. And although I say I hate CN, I love that they put OS and CB on, those are two of my favorites. Also, why is it so popular? The animation is alright, except at times like when Gohan got stabbed by that "energy drainer" by Yamu and Spopovitch. But still, there is no plot! It drives me crazy when I say there is no plot and whoever I am debating with goes "yes huh! There is a difference between Cell and Frieza! Gohan went SSJ!" Then I cut them off and say "And yes, it was just like the Saiyan Saga, Frieza Saga, Buu saga, Bebi Saga, Super 17" and so on and so forth.

Yeah. The "plot" is far too repetitive to be a real plot. When you said that, it reminded me of one of the Orphen episodes. There was this fight that happened twice, between Orphen and his friend, and the first fight was in the 1st DVD. This was in the 4th. It was identical. Even the graphics, only the words changed. That's like how DBZ is. The same fight, almost, but someone gains or loses something. Be it power or a life. The main "plot" in DBZ is what kind of monster the next villain will look like. That's.......about it...

Oh, that brings up another point...when they draw their DBZ fanart, they think it's so awesome because it looks just like the characters. Well, I hate to burst a bubble, but DBZ is not hard to draw and even the most loser artist can accomplish drawing a well done DBZ character. They are so simplistically drawn, and if you can draw one of them, you can draw them all. Just change the hair a little bit and there you go. I hate to be so Anti-DBZ (especially since PiroMunkie is so pro-DBZ), but it's just annoyed me lately. Maybe it's just a phase I'm in, and I'll get over it soon enough.

All the Dragonball series' are getting pretty tired. Especially after how it's being pushed on everyone over here(US). There's action figures, plush toys, Happy Meal toys, and in most of the stores that carry animes have at least three mini-shelves devoted to the series'. It's quite bothersome too, that people can actually think that they are seasoned veterans on the subject of anime if all they get is what's shown on the TV. This is especially the case with the Dragonball Z series. Not only is it mindless fighting, but it has a weak and repetitive plot. It takes like 4 half-hour shows to let one person explain their reason to be evil, and most of the time it's a really bad reason. Now I'm not saying that I have the complete right to judge, but these people can't just watch one show, that is as easily accessible as turning on the cable tv at the right time, and say they understand the being that is anime. If they would just try to watch another anime without comparing it to a mild one like DBZ, then they could say that they understand the other animes with more confidence. The Dragonball series' are also quite predictable, because a dead person can be easily brought back. Making it extremely easy to predict outcomes. In short, it is really annoying that people that don't watch other animes, say they know about animes.

That's exactly what I've been saying all along basically. The storyline is so redundant it's not even funny. And it takes like 3 weeks worth of episodes for 5 minutes to pass on the actual show. Time cannot go that slow...no matter how much they are powering up... But oh well. People will be simple minded and to them ignorance is probably bliss.
