Omar Harris
Originally posted by Queen Asuka And I don't think there is anything wrong with the animated cartoons on other networks that aren't even anime. They aren't stupid and dumb like DBZ and their dubbing CAN'T suck because it's SUPPOSED to be in English. DBZ sucks. I AM bashing DBZ. I hate that show, it's a piece of crap, and I'll never understand how it got popular.
I don't want to have to explain the male's obession with violence(I would go into the whole Adam/Eve argument I've had lately and contradict that last statement in man's defense but I won't). That's why the world is so screwed up sometimes. Yes, Ameican cartoons rock (hell if we didn't have good ol Walt and his Mickey Mouse anime wouldn't be here). Transformers was cool as was GI Joe (when I was like five and knew nothing of good storylines. I still love the shows mind you.), but as action goes they don't hold a candle to DBZ. Now as we all have mentioned DBZ is lacking in plot but that's probably because even Toriyama knew a money maker when he saw one. I hate people that think they know about anime from DBZ or Pokemon. I don't admit to being an anime affieciendo. I'm still learnig but I've been watching anime regularly since high school (even though I saw Voltron as a kid and got into it without knowing about it's Japanese background). I might have called myself that in the past but only to act as though I could show off. Oh and QA, we need some better descriptions (no offense) than stupid and dum so I'll provide them.=) This show sucks can rot in hell is f***** up is a POS. anyone who watches it is screwed in the head. Not that great but there you go. Always willing to help people realize not to be blind like me.
Roxie Faye
Queen Asuka, neither will I. I don't even watch it! I tried! I REALLY tried! I tried watching one epsode of DBZ. stopped watching it afer about 2 minutes. It was so horrible that i couldn't even get to the sucky plot parts because I shut off the T.V. The thing that got to me was those nasty alien thingys. They're so creepy. See? I don't even know about the sucky plot. -.-; 'prolly for the better. lol. I did watch ONE ep. of just dragonball, but it was one without any aliens. i don't even know if Dragonball has aliens in it. I don't even know if they ARE aliens(Lumi[naire] had to tell me that they were aliens. heh.) Anyways, what was my point to this? I don't think I have one. heh... Well, I just want y'all to know that I don't think I'm an "otaku" or know anything about anime cuz I don't. I'm stuck in my own little Digimon universe over here. I just said that to every one didn't I? *slowly edges away from crowd*
amibasuki
DBZ isn't that bad if you've only seen maybe 1 saga. I like the Cell saga, and not just cuz of Trunks either (although I'll admit it is part of the reason :tasty: ). it's when it gets redundant is when it starts sucking. maybe it's cuz I saw the Cell saga first that I can't stand watching the saiyan/frieza/OR/buu saga or something. I already saw all that from the Cell saga :cross:. anywho...

Doesn't it just bother you sometimes how people who watch DBZ think they are just the biggest anime fans and just because they are into DBZ they know so much? Now I'm not trying to step on anyone's toes because I watch the show sometimes too (when I had cable) but I just hate the way that that show dominates America's vision of what anime is...
I argee with you all the way QA. Some people in my grade think they know anime because they know DB/DBZ/DBGT and stuff like that. They think they are so cool, I won't even waste my time, not only could I make a totally fool of them but take all that pride in knowning a lot of DB series information and crush them into little bits. I tried to see if they knew other animes, even see'd if they knew YYH or Cowboy Bebop. I'm like "Have you ever heard of Yu Yu Hakusho?" They responded "You You what?" I felt like pounding them. Then I asked "What other animes do you know?" They said "Oh I know Pokemon and Digimon." [Not offending any person/persons that like Pokemon, I only say Pokemon because Digimon is OK.] Well I responded with some other words, but I don't want to say em because I wish not to make a fight with any of them. No one hate me because of my opnions! :(
Roxie Faye
Nope, I got no problem with that you're saying. Infact, I agree with it. The thing that REALLY gets to me is that a LOT of people, even people in this message board, tend to think that Digimon is a kids show. And even if they do distinguish a difference betwwen it and Pokemon, they still classify it as a kid show. Ok, so Digimon doesn't exactly have people's guts coming out, or tons of smoking, but that doesn't make it a kids show. In almost every episode, some Digimon is dying. Yamaki, in the beginig of Tamers, was purposely killing living creatures. Yes, it has a LOT of guns. Gargomon's "Gargo Laser" fires off all these shots, using a gattling arm(I think that's what it's called), and Beelzemon's "Double Impact" has these MASSIVELY sized guns(speaking of Beelzemon, I've heard him swear on more than one occasion). And, in 02, who can say that was kiddie? I mean, the first ark had so much abuse in it, theres no way that was kids stuff. Ok, yes sometimes the plot is a little weak *cough*02's ending*cough*, and some of the dubbed lines are messed up (that stupid renamon line), but every anime has SOME flaw in it, and that doesn't make it "kiddie", so why single out Digimon? Alright, now that I've made a big deal out of nothing, maybe I should leave and never come back.
Utena_Tenjou
It bugs the heck out of me, espcially when it's everyone at my school says there otakus but never even heard of Princess Mononoke! It happnes often in this forum to, I bet half of you guys haven't even heard of Ninja Scroll or never even seen stuff like Evangelion, Magic Knight Rayearth, or Love Hina. The word Otaku is way over used.
Omar Harris
I've heard of Monoke and Eva. I've never seen either but I am trying to save my money to get the whole EVA collected edition just to see what it's all about. It's like $163, the last time I checked and all my money is in the bank.
Utena_Tenjou
I've only seen 2 episodes and I'm obsessed with EVA :D Anyways back on topic, I'm tired of people calling themselves an Otaku when they've only seen animes placed on T.V. I've seen over 26 animes subed and I don't even call myself an otaku.
Guest Kurama
I watch televised and non-televised anime. I don't care how redundant dbz is, I will always watch it. I don't care if people think Yu Yu Hakusho is a dbz clone, I will watch. I don't care about the critsism. I also watch NGE, Oh My Goddes, Trigun, and 5 or 6 other non-televised shows. Yes, I know what you mean. I love and know alot about dbz and all but I don't call myself even remotley close to an otaku. But it seems to me as this thread progresses you begin crtisising all dbz fans. Not just the wannabees. :p Oh well

Def_Kun
What's with this sudden urge to be branded "Otaku"? Technically this has a negative connotation attached to it. I really don't want to be branded as such since I have other things more important to think about. Just my opinion though.
Omar Harris
Yeah, I really don't consider myself "Otaku" in the general since of the word (anime fanboy, correct me if I am wrong) since I don't watch a lot of anime on my own free will instead of what's on TV. And plus when you're called "Otaku" people sometimes see you as a fat slob who watches "cartoons" all day. I don't really care one way or the other because either way I don't have a life.=) Well actually I do with college but that's beside the point. I'm not a hard core otaku, I do watch some uncensored or subbed anime when I get the money (no job right now. Pray for me!) Now if I watch a movie or show religiously (like Digimon or DBZ) then I'll be an otaku for that show or movie and try to learn as much about just so that I could say "I know everything about Digimon, because I have no life" with pride. As has been stated earlier, I know longer find DBZ as appealing as I did before. I just watch the show now just to see every thing I spoiled for myself in fan sites and to see how they change things to English in the dub. Now comics I could do since I could read stacks of those in like an hour.
Mist
I doubt it. There's too many mindless fans out there for CN to ever drop their precious DBZ shows. Like you said, they make *millions* of the show, and I think they care more about revenue then they do quality. Of course, that's to be expected of CN, seeing how they don't carry a lot of quality anime. Heck, if they didn't have the first half of Adult Swim, I wouldn't watc it anyway!
vegeta rocker
yup yup yup! Annoying people! agggghhhh! They think they are true otakus and walk around "dude i can't wait for the new dbz episodes" i want to hit them. Yeah I admit I love dbz mostly because i just find it a simple pleasure to watch. I will admit its not the best out ther, its nowhere near some good old Nadesico or Macross. People in school are like hey are you an otaku and i say no, because frankly i don't think i am worthy of that title yet. I just know some and not as much as i would like. They all think they are sooooo cool because they can name all the dbz characters. But then i say who is turles and they say what episode was that? I swear i use much restraint. But as for dbz hey if it wasn't popular how much anime do you think most stores would stock? Would the other anime that cn shows be on? I think alot of anime like it or not had alot riding on dbz in the beginning but soon enough it can strike out on its on, in america i mean. Omar Harris
Actually if I remember correctly, Akira was the anime that started America's obsession. DBZ probably just shot interest in anime to new undiscovered heights. After, DBZ is like the first anime that pretty much everyone knows about no matter how much you hate it. Voltron was the first anime on CN but once again DBZ shot CN anime interest to new heights, which is why we have Adult Swim. As have been stated, there is really no point to Adult Swim if the program is still going to be partially censored.
DBZanimeFreak3
i watch all of toonami, and seen adult swim. i know i'm not otaku or whatever because i started to get into anime in feb. so in forums i do make an idiot of myself, but my sisters boy friend has been watching anime since my age, 13 or so. i have seen dbz, yyh, little gundam, seen akira, and i'm looking forward to cowboy bebop tonight. but her boyfriend watchs and knows alot about lots of series so he guides me through everything. he says i should get into gundam and outlaw star. so i watch adult swim, anyway for my own enjoyment. Mitch
Yeah I hate it when all people watch is DBZ when so much else is better out there.... I also can't stand all these little kids that like DBZ and worship it. It just makes me feel stupid that I like DBZ. Now, I am no Anime "Guru", but I've seen a little bit of alot of shows to know some about Anime, but I have a long way to go. Hopefully I can get enough dough to buy the Evangelion Box Set....I really want to see that whole series...
Genkai
i know what you're saying QA, and I totally respect it.... dbz fans can be tolerable if they understand that there's better anime out there. i myself watch the dubbed dbz about once or twice a week(i would actually watch it more, but i get busy...though i don't know how..), and i think it's fine, and mildly interesting. i am a HUGE db fan, though...weird... but i love most animes just as much... i think that most people who only like dbz were only introduced to dbz, and that that was their first anime. i think your first anime is special*sob*sob*, but since there is such a huge thing about dbz, if dbz is your first, you can't draw yourself out of the craze. my first manga(i'm more of a manga person, rather than anime) was ccs, and even though that is REALLY shojo, and i am more of a shounen and other stuff fan now, i still love ccs...... so don't be too hard on people whose first and only anime was dbz... it's mostly the media's fault!:)
vegeta rocker
anime is fun, but you all have points in that in can be bad influence. I don't like my 10 year old brother watching cowboy bebop. not because i think its too adult its because the second he started acting out the scenes with his toys i got worried. amiboshi
I don't let my brother watch my anime because most of it is really perverted, and I really don't think he needs any more of that, since he's bad enought as it is. U.U But my brother acts out DBZ scenes all the time, and at least it's hardly realistic, not something he could actually do, like shoot someone with a gun. I mean, like he could really kill someone with a ki blast in real life...... O.o
Pressure
Originally posted by Queen Asuka Oh, that brings up another point...when they draw their DBZ fanart, they think it's so awesome because it looks just like the characters. Well, I hate to burst a bubble, but DBZ is not hard to draw and even the most loser artist can accomplish drawing a well done DBZ character. They are so simplistically drawn, and if you can draw one of them, you can draw them all. Just change the hair a little bit and there you go. I hate to be so Anti-DBZ (especially since PiroMunkie is so pro-DBZ), but it's just annoyed me lately. Maybe it's just a phase I'm in, and I'll get over it soon enough.
I consider myself a pretty good artist, and I can't draw them. I used to be able to, but the inhuman muscle structure drives me crazy. Sorry, hipocracy has just always driven me mad.
Sensei-San
Queen Asuka has made a valid point, some Dragonball nuts think anime is all about it. Then again, Otaku means "Hardcore Fan", and in a sense, you can be a fan of virtually anything, whether it is a fan of a pop star, or a fan of a sports. It's ok to be a DB Otaku, but turning anime into something that it partially is, is incorrect. I like the Dragonball series, it is truly original, and has a great plot, counting that it was made a very long time ago. The DBZ "craze" is just something that will come and go. The main reason that it is so popular here is because it has just been introduced here. Lastly, one thing which must be made clear, Dragonball Z is not a cartoon, it is an anime series! This adds to the factors of its success, many children take it as a cartoon series, making it that much more successful since children tend to like animations much more. Hybrid was saying that it was weird when "otaku" didn't even know sometheing as mainstream as YYH and CB, kay? Plus, the reason they were made mainstream was because they were QUALITY ANIME! vegeta rocker
I think that we should let stupid people be that, stupid. I mean who are we to tell them that they are? Genkai
i agree vegeta rocker..... if someone ants to be a dbz obsesser without any knowledge whatsoever that anime is so much better than that, let them. but really, why is the name otaku so important? i don't think of it as an insult or a comliment. i just think otaku+anime fan.. im not what most people call an "otaku", but i have te word in my benner! i know that in japan it means anime "geek", or someone who is obsessed, or someone who knows a lot about anime, or someone who loses a social life because all they care about is anime, and i could go on about what otaku is taken as. but really, why care if you're an otaku or not? if you like anime, so be it, don't make a goal or anything of being a huge fan so you can call yourslef on "otaku". enjoy ehat you're enjoying, and if you become what is considered an "otaku", so be it.:)
