since there's no "other" type area in the gaming Boards i'll post it here in the Nintendo Forum. I got this from planetxbox.com.
Fourth Console?
Tuesday, May 28, 15:57 | Talon |
The console wars started in November with the release of Xbox and GameCube. Adding two other next generation consoles to the fray made the ?battle? more of a competitive game to play. The console wars could be placed under a heat lamp soon as it was revealed that Sichuan Changhong Electric, a Chinese TV firm, is planning their own console. Originally reported in the Inquirer the report stated that Sichuan Changhong Electric?s chairman said the company has already approached a number of Taiwanese and Japanese developers, one of which was Sunplus, a company that will be designing micro-controllers for the machine.
This mystery console will be manufactured in plants located in both Russia and China and, according to the report, will be competing against Xbox, PlayStation 2, GameCube and Game Boy Advance when it ships in a couple years.
I wouldn't take this seriously, because for one it's coming from the Inquirer reported it, and two if it does happen i doubt this company has the money to release it in America too.

Hmmm....well it sounds like it's the first console that this company has ever released. Still, it could be a threat to the current consoles.....or maybe not. It depends, I think we need to wait for further information to see what this console will really be like.

Like Jabroni said, I really doubt this system will be released in the US or anywhere besides Japan and wherever it's being made. I don't think it's going to be able to seriously compete with Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft... They might grow in time, so that they might be able to compete... But I don't think their first console is going to be a threat to the GCN, PS2, and Xbox. If it survives, though, it could be interesting to watch.

This console won't affect the current generation of systems already out there.

We've seen so many systems come and go...remember the "Nuon"? And the Panasonic 3DO?

These systems are made by companies who, more often than not, don't have any understanding of the game business. And these consoles always lack some good exclusive first party support.

But you just never know -- Sony took everyone by surprise in the last generation. You never know what will happen...

Well since the game is to be competing with xbox, ps2, and GC, the graphics will be in relation to all of them, meaning you cant really say its going to be awesome or rubbish. What really matters is the games going to be released, for example, the xbox isnt doing too well at the moment, and will soon be a big flop, but there are games like doa 3, and halo which give it a name (thats what got me an xbox!). For now we cant really say anything, until we see it in action.

What the hell..? A console being developed in China and Russia!? Of all places, Russia to make a new console.

The Chinese Company's chairman think it's gonna be up there with the PS2 and the GCN? They're gonna have to do bloody well then, lol. :)

I wouldn't say the X-Box "will soon be a big flop," the console has only been out for what, 7-8 months? You can't really say that untill X-Box Live is released along with the slew of games being released about that time also. Just look at all the titles coming out.

Im guessing that you live in america, because in the UK, we only had it for 3 months, and there is already a 100 pound/dollar price drop.

And i really hope it doesnt become "a big flop", its the only console which has got shenmue, but i dont think the xbox will live long enough to release the last chapter of the story.

Yes i know of the price drop over there, a friend of mine lives in the Netherlands, just because they dropped the price doesn't mean there's bad things to come for X-box, they just wanted it to appeal to you Europeans.

Well here in Australia, the X-box is the cheapest console, next to the Gamecube.

The PS2 has only had a small price drop to $450, compared to the $350 X-Box and Gamecube.

It also seems that the PS2 products are more wanted than the other two systems.

But that may be just me. .I'm sure one of you will attack me on that. .

Even if that new console comes out in a few years as it was written in that article, Sony may have the PS3 almost finished or completely finished, so it may have something big to compete against. I just hope it doesn't make Nintendo go the same way as Sega...

The man reason the 3DO console went out the same reason the dreamcast went out.The sub-company of panasonic,3DO,still makes many games still(mostly sport games)

Yeah, like the Wonderswan.

The fact is, the industry isn't big enough to support another major console.

So far, PS2 is way infront with about 30 million units worldwide. GCN comes in at about 4.5 million and Xbox at around 3 million.

PS2 will probably take about 50% of the hardware market. From what's left over, GCN will take anywhere from 60%-80% and Xbox will take the rest.

Even with a relatively small market share, game companies can still be profitable on Xbox. But if another company tried to move in...and took only say 5% of the leftover market...they simply wouldn't sell enough units to be profitable.

The only way I can see this system doing well is if it opens up some sort of niche market...or if it only sells in a country like China, where it could be released very cheaply and appeal to local consumers only.

Here in Australia the XBOX was struggling to compete with PS2 so it droped it's price tag dramatically (about US$100). The Gamecube arrived only recently and dropped it's price almost imediatly because it was then about the same price as XBOX. This 3-way price war may produce some cheap prices for very good gaming consoles. The PS2 seems to be quite comfortable with it's current price which it has been for a while. It has a very good marketing team, as it is seen as "the cool" gaming system and has had a long enough time to corner the market. I'm sticking with my Dreamcast for the mean time as i beleive the graphics are nearly as good as the other systems, and there's heaps of games i havn't played yet which can be accuired very cheaply.
