Fushigi Yugi Discussion!

I have the first volume subtitled, my only subbed volume of Fushigi Yugi, and I loved it, but I still like the dubbing, too. The only voice in the dubbing that bothered me was Miaka's, but even hers wasn't that bad, so it was interesting, you know? I love it when they can make a good dub. Yeah, lots of stories contradict themselves, such as Star Wars and everything. Ever since Episode II came out, a lot of facts are now irrevelant, and there are some things that now contradict themselves. Maybe she DIDN'T consider what she had previously stated about Chichiri, or maybe, like you said, she wanted to alter it to make it better in her eyes. And hey, it's her series, so she can do it. Power to her, you know? But yeah...it's slightly annoying. But I'm definately going to have to get that third volume so I can complete my collection.

Well, I bought the first 2, and I borrowed the third one from my friend. Unfortunately, now that I want to buy it so I can see it again, MediaPlay doesn't have ANY of the Fushigi Yuugi Tapes.....

It's pretty hard to make such a long and detailed story without contradicting yourself. I mean, with such specific facts, you can hardly blame her. But yeah, it's her story. She can do whatever she likes. ^^

Well, that's what DVD is for! There you go, the new cutting edge technology is now currently affordable! Anywho...

I don't think she didn't keep up with her story at all because I'm pretty sure she had an outline and went over it many, many times to make sure everything was coherent and went together like it was supposed to. Maybe that was just one part of the storyline she felt she didn't focus on enough and just wanted to make it better. Maybe it really doesn't contradict. Maybe in the TV series Chichiri didn't tell the ENTIRE truth because even though it was something he didn't want to talk about, but had it brought up when he was with Miaka, he might have "softened" the story somewhat. Do you see what I'm saying? I'll have to watch both of the episodes and compare one day so that I can actually have a valid opinion, seeing as how I haven't seen the third volume yet.

They don't have the DVD set, either, but I think it would be a waste to buy the DVD set even though I have the first 2 already....

Chichiri's story was always rather vague, and there are still some things I don't understand about, even after seeing the OVA.

I think the character whose background you never got to glimpse was Chiriko. I mean, every character was so well developed, most of the Suzaku Seven were, except for him. Even Mitsukake had a whole episode dedicated to him and what happened to him in his past. The only thing they tell us about Chiriko is that he's 12 years old and a super genius. He just HAPPENS to know the right time to come and save them before Amiboshi could kill the whole lot of them. Does he have a background story as well? Is there an entire OVA episode dedicated to him?

Who Chiriko??
No he was 13 he had no background yet..... I mean they told us everything we needed to know about him.... I mean he lived in jozen city, (which is just a stones throw away from the capital) and he was taking the Kakio (sp?) to be a high govt. official.... i mean what else could he have done in his short life????

Well I know that, but I mean I just think it's odd that he didn't have some awesome background story, too. Every one of the Suzaku Seven had very unique yet tragic/challenging/other sort of pasts. Even though he was 13, he could have had some sort of major thing happen in his life. It's just a thought.

Yeah. Amiboshi and Suboshi were only 15 and they had already seen their parents slaughtered in front of them. Yui was 15, and she already had a dramtic episode when she first arrived in the Universe of the Four Gods. Just because Chiriko was 13 doesn't mean he had an uneventful life..... It's not like the other characters were really that old. I mean, Tamahome was 17...

That's exactly my point. And alot of the stuff that happened to the people happened to them while they were VERY young children. Like Suboshi and Amiboshi's parents getting killed in front of them, and Nakago, and Soi getting sold and everything. They were like what, eight or nine years old or younger? So yeah, Chiriko can't be an exception, although I think he lived a sheltered life. His parents probably freaked out when they found out he was destined to be one of the Suzaku Seven and made every effort they could to keep him from being hurt in the course of his lifetime. Or what he had of one anyway, since he was only thirteen.

I think the terrible things happening at a young age made it even more dramatic. I mean, if your parents were killed when you were even 13 you would be able to handle it a lot better than if you were like 5. It would make a much bigger impact on you when you were younger, I think. I mean, of course something like the murder of your parents would impact you at any age, but maybe a little more so when you're even younger. It would be a whole lot scarier, and when you're young, you probably wouldn't really undertand what was going on.

Actually, I think if your parents died when you were at thirteen rather than at a younger age, it would hurt alot more and take a whole lot more time to get over it. You would have already spent thirteen years with them and then for them to be cut off from you at such an age, when you are about to enter the hardest years of your life, then it would be a whole lot worse than if you were five or so. I think that if you were five, you wouldn't have had the same amount of time to get to know your parents so it wouldn't be a scarring and you wouldn't necessarily get over it or anything, but I just don't think you would be torn as much. I don't know, that's just my opinion. It just doesn't seem right that Chiriko's background is so dull, and then his character was never played and never done justice, and then he died off so quickly. THAT was sad...

My friend showed me her manga of FY and I got started on the third volume since that was the only one there. Then I went to try and find the anime, which was kinda hard since they call that "Mysterious Play", and it's alphabetized.... O.o You should read more of it, though. I bet you'd like it.... Based on some of the other things you like...;)

Hmm. Another FY dicussion. Well I for one am happy you brought it back up seeing thatin 2002 I wasn't really into manga. Oh well I can't and won't regret it now.
I just think I'll post something about what I have particularly enjoyed about this manga. No, I have not yet seen the anime and I know that I must but I will wait for the right time for that to happen.

But althought the themes of this manga may be a lil more on the mature side it does seem to posess a few themes that a person's life is always inflicted by.

The number one thing being Friendship. The friendship between Miaka and Yui was seen as somewhat of a cool friendship. That is until Jealosy and Envy finally poke thier little heads into the scenario.

Both were jealous of each other and when that blatant fact hit me in the face I began to feel sorry for both of them. I mean Miaka, seen as a dumb person by some standards is becoming the stronger of the to. Yui, for whom I am beginning to feel sorry for is more feeble than she has let on to in the earlier volumes of the manga.

Not only that she became jealous and envious of Miaka's relationship with Tamahome (aww what a cutie) and tries her hardest to keep her seperated.

But I think that is what truly tied me to this manga. The storyline of it. And I can't wait to read the rest for I truly wonder how will Miaka's friendship with Yui and her relationship with Tamahome suceed.

What do you out there think?

I myself hate Miaka. I would love to reach into the manga and throttle her. She falls for an anoyance named Tamahome (pardon me Tamahome lovers) instead of someone who is so much more cute and nice then him (again, pardon me), who is called Hotohori-sama! She breaks his heart and tells him he's not good enough (in my words) and then he DIES for HER!! :flaming: *mutters curses* Stupid woman.

I was on an FY site yesterday and found out that there is a new manga called Fushigi Yuugi Genbu Kaiden. It follows the story of the Priestess of Genbu and her adventure inside the book around the early 1900s. From what I've read it seems like a lot of it is linked to what happens to Miaka and Yui in the future. Anyone know anything about Genbu Kaiden?

I've been reading it. It's set at the start of the Taisho era (1923). Another girl with an unhappy home life (Takiko), the beginning(?) of the Book of the Four Gods. Genbu is a different god; she is in a different kingdom (Hokkan). The beginning at least is as interesting as the beginning of Fushigi Yuugi. It's really well drawn.

Is this being sold in stores? Because I think this is something that I would most definately be interested in picking up.

Watching the series, I was always so fascinated with the Priestess of Genbu, especially since her past was shrouded in mystery. All of her Celestial Warriors were passed and gone, and so it always appealed to me to know. She is also one who fell in love with one of her warriors, right? Maybe I'm getting her mixed up with the other Priestess, seeing as how I haven't watched the series in a long while. I think I should carry all of my videos home and watch them over Spring Break...

I heard about the Genbu Kaiden novel. I was really hoping Watase Yuu would come out with something like that, because she never really touched on the Taikiko or Genbu story whatsoever. It seemed really interesting, cuz the sieshi were totally different then Suzaku or Seiryu.
I also want to know the whole Suzano and Byakko story.

The first tankubon only is on sale in Japan. I am reading fanscans from ShoujoMagic.

I think the first volume did a good job setting up the rest of the story. Enough happened to keep all the exposition from becoming boring. Takiko gives off a different feeling from Miaka; she is a bit tougher and warier. I mentioned before that I like the artwork.

Wow! They came out with a story about The Priestess of Genbu? *Excited* Her story always really intrigued me, but they didn't touch on it much at all. Takiko was mentioned a lot, and the tragic details of what happened to her, but they didn't talk about her adventures in the book, or her warriors for that matter. Yu Watase is writing it, right? I'd be so upset if someone pulled another Eikoden and made something using Watase's story, but not at all up to par with the usual FY quality.
Takiko gives off a different feeling from Miaka; she is a bit tougher and warier.
Well that's a relief. I don't think I could handle another Miaka. I've learned to deal with her, but one is still enough. Plus, there's too many instances where manga artists use and reuse their characters.

I can't wait to read some of Genbu Kaiden!

I've ssen a bit of Fushigi Yugi. Most of it dubbed (except for the OAV)

I've decided that Miaka though extremlyy annoying and greedy is deep down a loyal person. After all, she did
Refuse to be with Tamahome when she found out that Yui was in love with him
In fact from what I can gather, Miaka's one wish that she really wanted was for her and Yui to be friends again.

She seems like a very well developed character. Although at times very emotional. She was even upset about that one seiyruu (am I spelling that right?) guy who
fell into the rushing river when he tried to kill her after they found the real Chiriko.
You can't help, but at least try to like a character like that. Even if she can be a bit annoying.

So yeah, make fun of her all you want, but I'm still going to be a Miaka fan.
Even if in some ways I do blame her for Nuriko's death
