OKay I'm just going to jump in here w/ my two cents.

Hotohori's character is awesome. To be so stoic and sad at the age of 18 and yet so capable really sets him apart. He's incredibly mature, as his position has forced him to be so. He's also giving and self-sacrificing, especially with his whole Miaka issue. I mean, he truly loved her. Imagine finding the one you had ALWAYS dreamed of. You actually are able to hold them in your arms, and feel them close to you. For a moment, that soft pain you constantly have in your heart melts away, and you don't feel so alone anymore. Would you be able to let that go? Well he did, and you KNOW it was hard for him, and he wasn't just 'oh well' about it either. And again, it was a sacrifice on his part. I could go on and on about Hotohori, but I think it's best I move on..

I like Amiboshi's character, too. It's dynamic as opposed to his brother's, and it's interesting to see how different the two of them are (I think you can see more of that in the first OVA mostly). Yeah, he's a good guy. I like Tasuki and Chichiri as well, and Nuriko, gah..... I like just about all of them. I can even sympathize with Nakago... mostly because of his background, and how traumatizing it must have been. Those events and his actions in the series make sense in their connection. He's not just some psycho doing what he does because he's bored or something. I'd want revenge on the world if I was in his shoes, too! It's not the right thing, but I can understand it.

Subbed is better than dubbed, period. I think if I had seen the series subbed I wouldn't dislike Miaka so much. She's so annoying.... I don't hate her but a lot of the time I was like 'ughhhh.... shut UP already'. Example: "..Tamahome...." "...Miaka..." "...Tamahome!..." "...Miaka!..." etc. etc. etc. etc. throughout the whole series. :drunk: Tamahome's alright. Not my favorite, but he's alright.

let's see.... that's about it....... I'll probably think of more later on...

Yeah, I feel sorry for Hotohori. He was so sure that once he found the Priestess of Suzaku, she would love him. And he was sure of it ever since he was little. No family anymore, and like you said, only 18 and ruling a country. And then he finally found Miaka, and she doesn't love him....she loves Tamahome.... I can't believe Hotohori doesn't completely hate Tamahome...... I'm glad Hotohori found a wife, and someone to love that loved him back.

Even so....I just don't like Hotohori, and I'm not sure why......

I've come to find that a big reason why people don't like Hotohori is because of his passive nature, that's he's like, weak or something. But's he's not passive or weak; I guess some just misread him and his motives. He has to rule a nation, thus his personality is basically programmed to always put others above himself. When he's put up against a counter-type like Tasuki who is loud and rather impulsive, he seems wishy-washy. But, as I've already said in my general opinion, he's not wishy washy, just level-headed. Anyway, everyone has their preferences for these characters, and with good reason since they are of such broad range in personalities.

i thought Hotohori deserved everything he got..... cuz I loathe him to no end... he was such a retard... sorry to any hotohori fans.... but he looks like cher!!!

"poor baby all dirty and covered with blood. You excite me! not he same way as a woman, but more like a toy or favorite meal."
I love Nakago he is so cool.....

I think one reason I don't like Hotohori very much is because he made things so hard for Tamahome and Miaka in the beginning. I know Hotohori loved Miaka, but he was just getting in the way..... Right after Nuriko told Miaka he loved Hotohori, and Miaka was "casually letting him know", Hotohori goes and confesses his love to Miaka, which ruined the friendship, temporarily with Nuriko, and made Tamahome ignore Miaka. Everything was fine before that. I was watching my tapes again, and that always pisses me off. I mean, Tamahome, Nuriko, and Miaka are all together and know what's going on, but Hotohori always just butts in. Now, I know it's because he has a country to rule, but that's just why I don't like him.

You know Forest Pixie, you could shed a little more light on the basis of your somewhat brash opinion..... "retard" and "because he looks like Cher!!!" aren't really persuading...

Anyway, the only thing I never liked about him was his vanity issue. Sometimes it was funny though, like the scene where the warriors are caught and being held by Tasuki's mountain bandits, and Hotohori does this Cover-girl sparkle thing. That was the part I laughed the hardest in the whole series.

Yeah, Hotohori was so good at being a girl, he even picked up a guy. ^^ You can't blame the guy for mistaking Hotohori for a girl, especially when he was pretending to be one on purpose....O.o

I have a question about one of Hotohori's vanity 'jokes'. This may sound stupid, but it's been bugging me..... On the first tape, right before Miaka runs into his room and asks him about the Universe of the Four Gods, and how she gets the power of Suzaku, Hotohori gives that depressed sigh and says "I'm so beautiful, it scares me..." (or something like that), and his attendants start flying around the room. I don't get it....why are they flying around the room? It just bothers me, 'cause I don't get it!!!

I think the reason they are flying around the room is because they didn't expect him to say something like that, yet they knew that he was capable of such a saying. It's almost like the anime sweatdrop thing. They tend to do stuff like fall over when something like that happens. But I can't put my finger on the name of the emotion at this very second.

Now, back to the discussion (man, I've been gone for over a week, and I need to get back into business here...) I wonder what would have happened if it had been Hotohori that Miaka had met first. I mean, she did have feelings for him and she could have feel for him instead. Tamahome was just her first rescuer. It's an interesting thought.

And I don't really understand why I don't like Hotohori. I do think he's a VERY nice looking guy. And he's a sweetheart to everyone. And he's rich and royal....I just don't understand. I think I just disliked him to spite the people that do like him, becaue they don't tend to like Tamahome and he is my sweetie...

lol. Yes, Tamahome is the world's biggest cutie. Be it because he's very attractive, or because he is just so darn sweet to Miaka.

That's an interesting thought, I never thought about Hotohori and Tamahome that way. Hmm...I wonder if Miaka would have fallen for him then since you wouldn't even know about Tama yet. I mean, she didn't get involved with Hotohori because she was always too worried about Hotohori. But still, Hotohori couldn't have gone on all those missions and such with Miaka like Tama did. He couldn't have risked his life and protected Miaka like Tamahome did, and I think that's one thing that made Miaka like Tamahome so much. His devotion with his love. Since Hotohori still had his duties as emperor, he would have been limited with his time with Miaka. Plus, Hotohori is so serious, and Tamahome always kidded around with Miaka, especially in the beginning....but that's a question of Miaka's taste. So.........hmm.....You've brought a new thought to me! I won't be able to stop comparing this now when I watch the series.....

Well, I never thought of it as in depth as you put it right there, though. But I mean, in my preference, I would have a hard time picking Hotohori over Tamahome. That's a very good thing, that Tamahome could always be there for her. That's one thing a girl needs, support. And because of his duties, Hotohori could only have supported her from afar, you know? And Tamahome is so much more cuter and people dont' mistake him for a woman. I'd be VERY embarrassed if people kept thinking my boyfriend was a girl, wouldn't you?

Yeah, I don't like Hotohori's feminine look....Tamahome's much better for Miaka. Now, Hotohori's a great Husband for his real wife, but not for Miaka. Miaka is too active to be the wife of an emperor. She goes all over the place and gets herself into all sorts of trouble. Hotohori just can't support her with that kind of behavior. Plus, Tamahome seemed to understand her a lot more. Hotohori is so serious and mature, and Tamahome kids and can be immature. Miaka isn't as serious as Hotohori at all.....like the time Miaka tried to convince everyone that she was over losing Evil Tama, and Hotohori kept asking her if she was alright, and Miaka finally screamed at him. I would have done the same, he was being so stupid. He just doesn't understand Miaka and her behavior like Tamahome does.

See, I just never was a big Hotohori fan, and I never really will be, no matter how many times I watch the episode about him and his son. And I think I actually laughed on the episode where he died. Not laughed, but I was slightly amused.

Now, a character we haven't really discussed is Tasuki. I just don't know what exactly to think of him since his whole, falling in love with Miaka thing. I believe that was quite absurd. I mean, he's never been the type to even seem like he's in love with a woman, and I surely thought him and Nuriko was going to have some sort of a thing together. I don't know, it just shocked me and everything. Tasuki, I figured, was the one who was supposed to skip over the mushy stuff and just be sort of the comedic relief. Of course, the OVAs are much more deeper than the actual TV series. I've only seen the first two volumes, though.

well Tasuki always thought of Miaka as a little sister.. everyone did...and he was REALLY piseed anyone tried to hurt her... and towards the end of the series you could kinf of tell his feelings for her started to change.. with the whole peach thing.... and then when she had to leave thier world... he probably thougth he wouldnever see her again... and then she came back.... and he since he enver really understood girls.. he thought that everytime she was crying about Taka.. Taka had hurt Miaka....
and then to make things worse he Hikou put that spell on him to screw up his emotions... and it showed emotions Tasuki didn't know he had...
But I still don't think that Tasuki ever really loved Miaka like Taka did.... He always loved her like a little sister he just never wanted her to be hurt by anyone especially Taka cuz Miaka loved him so much....
or at least thats what i got out of it....

I actually agree with that. I like the point you made. Tasuki always had a thing against Tamahome because he remembered how he had hurt Miaka back when he was evil (and how he also seriously kicked his butt, too...). So yeah, the little sister thing is a really good theory.

Mmm hmm. That's true. He didn't seem the type to fall in love, really. He just deeply cared for Miaka. He totally misunderstood Miaka and Tamahome/Taka. I think he never really shook off the feeling that Tamahome had hurt Miaka when he was evil, like you said. He really did act a lot like a big brother. He risked his life all the time for her, (but he was a celestial warrior, so.....) and he never really acted like he was in love, but he did care a lot for her. Tasuki is a very interesting character indeed.....

Chiriko never seemed to risk his life for Miaka and he was a celestial warrior. Man, I wish I could have been Miaka and went back into Ancient China and had seven gorgeous guys pampering me. I wouldn't mind being the Priestess of anything (except Seiryu...), as long as I could have those kind of people devoted to me all the time, risking their lives for my well being. And then, I could fall in love like Miaka/Tamahome and the Priestess of Genbu I believe it was that feel in love with that one warrior guy...GRR...I really need to watch the series over so I can get all my names straight again...

chiriko actually did save miaka.....but he sacrificd everything for her... when he was abducted by Miboshi.... he actualy sacrificed his life for everyone....

I would love to be the priestess.... but it would be better if you knew about the shinzahos... so then you could just go and summon the god and get your wishes... even though it defeats the whole purpose... but hey its alot easier then what they went through
But I would rather be the Seiryu no Miko.... cuz Nakago, Amiboshi, and Suboshi are so pretty... and i like the villains more then the heroes....

you wanna know something REALLY sad??? I can name every character... I can name them and tell how they relate to the story.... like who they know and ho they are related to.... thats how many times i have seen FY.....

Well, I'm glad to say that I have a life and it doesn't revolve around watching Fushigi Yugi all the time! :toothy: But anyways...

I do not like villians, not in any show really. Especially Nakago. I mean, sure he was pretty, but he was so vile and so evil. And he basically used Yui and lied to her and didn't really protect her like he should have. That wouldn't be the type of people that I'd want to be associating with and everything. I'd need people around me that I could actually trust and everything.

And ALSO, it wouldn't be any fun just to get the Shinzahos and then summon the beast god. Then you wouldn't be able to make a set of remarkable new friends who love you and care for you and protect you with their life. That's what the whole point of the story was, not just to summon the beast god. So yeah...

What in the world do you consider evil then if it's not a person that's bent on nothing but revenge! That's almost the defintion of an evil person! And so yes, Nakago is very evil. He is the epitome of evil! And that is why I don't like him. Is it just me, or do you want to associate with someone who just grabs up and innocent little bird and squeezes it to death for no reason?

-_- Hmm, maybe I'm just psycho... but I understand Nakago... I mean if I hadn't known anything but what his life was like and had to endure what he did I'd be pretty bent of revenge myself. Of course, this is a fictional character, so there's holes to remember here. But anyway I know Nakago is/was ??? evil, but I don't hate him, I pity him. On with the cabbage! Back to boot I am neutral here.... don't ask I don't know. :hippy:

I just don't like him because I just don't tend to be too fond of bad guys. I tend to favor the hero type, the good guy, the one who's going to save the damsel in distress, fall in love, be chivilrous, etc etc, and so NO, Nakago, the evil villian that he is, does not fall into that category. Yes, he had a hard life with a tragic childhood, but hey look at Amiboshi. He saw his parents get killed right in front of his face, and you don't see him trying to get revenge on the entire world. In fact, he's all on Miaka and Suzaku's side and wants to do things peacefully. So I really never considered him a villian. Now his brother on the other hand, Suboshi, he was some kind of evil, but his was more like a cry for help. He was in love with Yui and he saw her slipping through his fingers. Then he thought his only family, his twin brother, was dead. He was just very hurt. That's why he went and got revenge on Tamahome. Not the entire world, that's my point...

Yeah. It all depends on his psycho the villains go, and excatly how out of control thir grudge or revenge is. I always like the heroes, too. That's just the way I am.... They always appeal to me more, except for maybe Ami. But like you said, he never really seemed very evil, since he sided with Miaka and the Suzaku Seishi, plus, he never actually killed any of them, so he wasn't that bad at all. ;) Although he did kinda indirectly cause the deaths of Tamahome's family, but that was really Nakago and Suboshi's fault.

I wouldn't really say that Amiboshi in ANY way caused the death of Tamahome's family. He wasn't dead and he didn't play as though he was dead, and I just wonder how in the world Suboshi couldn't feel his life force anymore. I think it's all Suboshi's fault, the whole entire thing. He didn't even KNOW if it was Tamahome's fault or not that his brother was "dead", yet he goes and kills his entire family anyway. That was just plain out stupid, and killing for fun, it seems like.

That's what Nakago does...he kills for fun.
