Ice shelf found on Mars

Just recently, scientists have discovered a huge ice shelf just under the surface of Mars. As you may know, they have been looking for signs of the presence of water that may have previously been on Mars. Now, following the discovery of this huge ice shelf, they're looking to send the first man to Mars....

They've been performing tests out in the outback of Australia and other desset like places, just to give us an idea of how it would be like on Mars. Apparently, it would be cold, but the person/s sent there would not feel the cold, as for the suit/s they would be wearing (the suits have been designed on computer, though haven't actually been built yet).

Now that they've found this frozen water, they're looking to send man to mars, possibly by, at the closest, 5 years, though it's not likely to happen until 2024. When Mars is closest to Earth, it's 40million miles away, and when it's furthest, it's arund 400million miles away....this means that when they send the first man up to Mars, they only have 3 days to spend there. If they don't leave within those 3 days, they will have to stay on Mars for 18 months, as the shuttle they first came in, will not have enought fuel to get back to Earth.

This is pretty interesting, and I've been looking up info on this for a while now. JUst wanted to know what all you guys opinion's were on this? I think it's pretty amazing that this could actually happen, I mean, that would mean mankind has been onto 2 different planets, excluding the moon, which isn't really considered a planet. Pretty mind boggling, eh?

First man on mars? Cool, but I am just wondering, where have we been. I believe that we had the technology in front of us the whole time we were just to lazy to use it. I believe that if we really wanted to we could have acheived that quite a while ago. :freak:

I don't think people will be living on Mars for a while yet....Mars comes closest to Earth (40million miles away from Earth's atmosphere) for only 3 days. Then it stays away from Earth (400miilion miles away from Earth's atmosphere) for 18 months.

They'll have to make some kind of special habitat that humans can adapt to so we can live on Mars....

Aparently it reaches up to 5*C at times when it's closest to Earth, and then can go back to as cold as -110*C when it's furthest from Earth. So that almost makes it impossible for humans to live on Mars.

And then we'll go and drain yet another planet of resources, not bothering to learn from past mistakes. Of course, with Mars, we'll at least have the excuse that we created them in the first place. But other than that, interesting.

The latest idea I heard for Mars was that they were going to shelter one of the many gorges on the surface, covering it with a steel plate, sealing the ends off, and existing in that as protection from the elements. Then a volcano erupts... Anyway. That may actually be feasible if Mars does have a possible water source.

I hope to see the day that we send a man to Mars! It would be great, maybe someday even colonies on Mars, muhahha, of course run by me!

All of these theories have been around for years and the discovery of water only makes it easier.
They still have to find out if it really is water.

The ways it makes it easier is that they do not have to take water with them and that they don't need to take as much fuel. That is all that the presences of water dose to help.

I also heard and I don't know where so I can't back this up but I heard that women, not men would be better suited to go to mars.
Dose any one know any thing about that?

They have had the tech to go to mars for 5 years but it would cost allot to really go there, and tests still need to be done to see if it is possible.
The time frame to get to mars has been for the last 10 years 2022.

Also there are really two ice sheets, one at each pole.

I'm sure Mars does have a water source. I mean, it did have what appears to be channels made by running water millions of years ago... Maybe Mars just lost its atmosphere due to some weird solar wind thing or something. Heh, Mars could be nothing but a big flying snowball covered in an outter layer of rock for all we know... But if it is like Mercury, Venus, and Earth... not to mention the Moon, it would have to have a heated core... meaning.... the ice would be melted and there would be water on Mars...

Shoot, if we could find a way to make gases and stuff, we could just send tons of bombs of it to Mars and create an atmosphere to keep the heat in and maybe, with a bit of luck, spawn life on Mars and watch kind of like a history of our planet with the plants growing and stuff... that would be cool...

But first man on Mars in this lifetime... wow... They said NASA couldn't put a man on the moon... 4 years later, NASA put a man on the moon. Now they said we couldn't put a man on Mars... we're trying to get a man on Mars...

First man/woman on Mars sounds pretty cool. But how come they only have 3 days and not 4? I mean, the longer they have on Mars, the more we can learn. If they stay an extra day, why will they have to wait for 18 months? I mean, Mars will rotate around the sun, but it'll only go for a few more miles.

ugh, living on mars, do not remind me of ray bradbury's obsessive books.

if they do get a man on mars, that would be incredible

Heh it's all very simple... if you look at a space chart, they're not all straight circles, they're eliptical... and when mars is "a few more miles" from the earth, it's really a few million more miles from earth. So like say, if someone had an emergency and had to get back to earth for the supplies... Earth would be on one side of the sun while your on the other side with an emergency... that would be a problem, would it not? lol

Possible life on mars, I dont doubt it. After a while now, of compairing the Earth to Mars, it is great to see them taking the next step. There is another sign of previous life, besides Frozen Water. There is also the famous "Face" that was found on the surface of the moon. It is great to hear this latest news.

I agree with Harlequin, we'll just go there, drain the resources and leave Mars more desolate than it already is.

I still think it's interesting though, imagine what it would be like to be the first man (or woman) to step on Mars?

A man on Mars... incredible. Hopefully when/if it happens, people don't let it go to their heads and start doing a whole bunch of things with Mars that isnt neccessary.

But putting a person on Mars... Next thing you know we will be putting up space colonies on the moon.

Putting a space colony on the moon has been brought up before, and they've been researching quite a fair bit into it.

Atleast, what they say, is that it would be much easier than living on Mars, as it's not as cold on the moon as it is on Mars. And the moon doesn't change it's distance from Earth, it always stays the same, unlike Mars. This would make it easier to get back to Earth if there was an emergency.

The only problem is, that they haven't confirmed that water is/has been on the moon. If they do find water on the Moon, I think that will be the next step- to live on the moon, rather than sending a man to Mars.
