James
Originally posted by Voodookanaka really? I wonder y they put it on there websites then, ok i believe you no, but the chances of someone coming round and catching me within 24 hours has got to be soooo low it might as well be legal... o_O besides, on another note, they've stopped selling the early ff, so they must have become freeware, and i do know that its then not illgal ... :D
They put it on their websites to somehow legitimize their illegal activity. It's like saying "it's okay to buy a pirate CD if you have the original copy". When actually, it's illegal to buy the pirate CD, irrespective of whether you own the original or not. Furthermore, no Final Fantasy games have become freeware. Squaresoft is still releasing these games in the form of remakes...so the point is moot. They are still releasing these games and thus, they are still in circulation -- and not freeware. Even old games that aren't in production are not necessarily freeware. Some companies defend their intellectual property very aggressively; if you are hosting old Nintendo ROMs for example (games that are out of public circulation), Nintendo can still sue you and press criminal charges. So, ROMs in any form are illegal (unless you are talking about shareware or something of that nature). The reason I make such a point about this, is because theOtaku.com has always had a history of fairly good relationships with gaming publishers. We've often had games sent to us for review when we used to have gaming sites running. And so, for us to push something illegal (or to allow it), would directly contradict that relationship with the industry. Granted, we no longer review video games. But we do have contact with anime companies and as such, we need to be very aware of issues of piracy and other illegal practices involving intellectual property. Phew...longwinded...but it might help some others on the boards to better understand our view on piracy and why we place importance on protecting against it. :)
Barra Maral
Hey, James. in your opinion, do you think that any final fantasy will ever go shareware? just wondering.

Not a chance, I'm afraid. It's just too big of a franchise to ever go shareware. Even if Square stop producing games, it is very unlikely that it will ever become a shareware game. Shareware is becoming increasingly rare these days. I can't think of even one console game that is shareware -- the console industry tends not to work in that way. So, even in general terms...it's unlikely that you'll find a shareware console game. For those who want to play old Final Fantasy games, there are plenty of options -- you can either buy a second hand version of the original game, or you can buy one of the newer PSX remakes (which are still in circulation). :)
Barra Maral
You are probably right. Although i do wish they would. and you are right about there not being a single shareware console game.

Desbreko
Yeah, sure you got that off www.nintendo.com... Here's what it actually says:
There is a good deal of misinformation on the Internet regarding the backup/archival copy exception. It is not a "second copy" rule and is often mistakenly cited for the proposition that if you have one lawful copy of a copyrighted work, you are entitled to have a second copy of the copyrighted work even if that second copy is an infringing copy. The backup/archival copy exception is a very narrow limitation relating to a copy being made by the rightful owner of an authentic game to ensure he or she has one in the event of damage or destruction of the authentic. Therefore, whether you have an authentic game or not, or whether you have possession of a Nintendo ROM for a limited amount of time, i.e. 24 hours, it is illegal to download and play a Nintendo ROM from the Internet.
And here's the URL for the page to back it up: http://www.nintendo.com/corp/faqs/legal.html#authentic
Guest Werewolf
well, u see, i have played most of the ff series, yet i even have the ff 1-6 on the pc. pity i don't have the *** version of ff6, but doesn't matter. anyway, in my opinion, ff 8 was the best in the areas of the actual junction system cause u get to customize ur characters however u want it. also, in graphics and sound, ff8 was definitely better. it had an excellent story, IN MY OPINION!!! However, ff7 was also good in many ways, for example, the system was easier, and also, the game was definitely harder. but the thing that appealed to me the most in the game was that there were much more mini-games and interactions possible. however, at the end, it comes down to what u like, and comparing ffx to these games is just not possible, well, cause these games were made 4+ years behind and the ps2, ps and the pc just can't be compared in the tech area. however, ff8 is definitely one of the top games for me!!!:)
