Heaven's Cloud
Well if you live in the United States, and you are a minor, your rights have now been diminished. Please read the following: AP- The Supreme Court approved random drug tests for many public high school students Thursday, ruling that schools' interest in ridding their campuses of drugs outweighs an individual's right to privacy. The 5-4 decision would allow the broadest drug testing the court has yet permitted for young people whom authorities have no particular reason to suspect of wrongdoing. It applies to students who join competitive after-school activities or teams, a category that includes many if not most middle-school and high-school students. Also, here is a link to the full article. Queen Asuka
I seriously don't mind. We have way too many drugs down here in my school. And even though I'm part of an extra curricular after school activity, even though they may test me, I know I have nothing to worry about because I don't do all that stuff. But it's just ridiculous when people are doing it at school and selling it and stuff and some teachers know about it and they still get away with it. It irks me highly. I mean, do that on your own free time, at home or elsewhere. But keep it away from school, you know? I think that schools should have had that right a long time ago.
Heaven's Cloud
But are they not assuming that you have commited a crime before you have commited one. It is a small basic infringement on your rigs that can lead to larger ones. What happens if you were to go to a party and you walked past a person smoking a joint. While walking by you accidentally inhale smoke. The next day your coach passes around a cup and asks you to take a drug test. You fail, and you are kicked off of the team and suspended from school. I understand that drugs are a problem among teens, but this is not the way to solve the problem. There is an old saying that states "better to let a hundred guilty men go free then strip the freedom from one innocent man", I believe that was Benjamen Franklin.
Queen Asuka
I'm sorry but just inhaling a slight amount of smoke the DAY before a drug test is not going to come out as positive for you using drugs. I still agree that they need to be doing it. If you aren't supposed to be doing them, then you shouldn't be. It's against school rules and lots of the drugs are even illegal that are being used at school. So why NOT have drug testing? Besides, you shouldn't have anything to worry about right?
Kinetic
I personally agree with Queen Asuka, they should give random drug tests, to set kids straight. I know I don't do them, and I know what they can do, because my dad took some when he was my age, and said they were horrible. I think it should be stopped, because addictions are bad, and when they are harmful, that is even worse. I agree with the fact that they will be administring (sp?) them randomly, so that they can catch the ones who do it, and set them straight. Now, if they start searching peoples lockers, that's a different story. I mean, what if a girl is on her period, and has something private in her locker. I don't keep anything in my locker for fear of it being stolen, but that would still be an invasion of privacy.
Queen Asuka
At my school they do locker searches and they also do parking lot searches where they take the drug dogs to sniff things out. You wouldn't believe how many people get expelled for having illegal drugs on campus. And I'm glad that they are so big on cracking down on drugs, even though I still don't think it's enough. Drug testing in the perfect thing they can do. Now, Aries, if a girl was on her period and she had her stuff in her locker, she's not very bright now, is she? I think she should have that sort of thing in her purse, so it's there at all times. And that REMINDS me, why in the world does it bother people to see a tampon or a pad in a girls purse or something??? You know what it's for and everything so it's not like it's going to jump out and BITE YOU! I hate girls who wont let you look in their purses because they have a pad in there. Well, HELLO, I'm a girl, too, and it's NOT a big deal. I will THROW tampons and pads at the idiots who are scared of them, so yeah...and I KNOW that was off topic, but I just had to get that off my chest...
PiroMunkie
Pfft! I could care less. I hate drugs of any kind. Legal and illegal (moreso the illegal of course). As long as I don't have to pay for the drug test, I don't care. I don't do extra-curricular activities, just because I'm not into sports or clubs or anything that might involve being organized and having to do some kind of work (probably the resaon I'm slacking off in the job search). Very few friends of mine do drugs, and those that do, don't do them around people that don't. If someone random is smoking and you walk by, chances are rare that you will actually inhale the smoke. If you see it coming, you should hold your breath. If not, you still don't have to be far away to not inhale the smoke. Not too long ago I was at a show, and this person in front of me lit up a pipe real quick and I could even smell it and this person was right in front of me. But then again there are many ways to cheat drug tests. Pickle juice I've heard is a good way of doing that. A nemisis of mine drinks like, 6 cups of pickle juice so he comes out clean on is drug tests.
Guest Dark Raven
I have nothing to hide, so I really don't mind. Plus it's not like it's that painstaking. They just take a peice of your hair, and test it right. Plus what I heard was thaat they aren't planning to punish those students who are found positive, they just plan to try to get them help. What is so bad about that? Too many young people are doing ddrugs nowadays. I think it's a good thing.
Turkey
They can test me every hour if they want. I'll always come clean. This right is simply making schools much, much cleaner.
Guest Matt
Well, I too, could care less. I don't do drugs. Never have, never will. Our school also has a drug problem, so I welcome these screenings.
Anna
QA and I go to the same school, and yes there are a LOT of drug problems at our school. GAWL it's annoying...... The way I see it, if you want to abuse your body and clog it up with "substances", be my guest. It's your choice! BUT, when it affects me then it's become a personal matter. I absolutely cannot for the life of me STAND IT when I walk into a bathroom and I smell pot and COME OUT smelling like pot even though all I wanted to do was take care of business. That really bothers me, because my eyes always start stinging, I start coughing, and I reek the rest of the day and then people think I do that crap! So yeah, I'm all for drug testing in school. Do it on your own time people, not at school.
Phantom
Well, only idea to that is ... give up all your gun rights and move to canada... serious.. Canada has the nicest drug policies next to the netherlands... but our gun control is quite strong... its like recripcating with the states who hate drugs and love guns... kinda funny lol
amibasuki
I wouldn't have a problem w/ it. we've discussed this in school before, and ppl would bring up that if they didn't want to have one, they shouldn't have to have one (mind you, most of the ppl who said this DID do drugs  ). if the police or whatever want to test ppl for something illegal at school, then they DO have a right to, IMO. it's not like they're asking you to take off your shirt or anything. just get a frickin' blood test and be done with it. if you're doin' what you're supposed to, you shouldn't have anything to worry about. Guest Matt
It's not even a blood test. They just have you pee in a cup. We have no freedom in school anyway. We get yelled at for swearing, but it's freedom of speach. but that doesn't matter, cause in school we have no rights. Only prevliges that can be taken away. And the privlige of not being screened for drugs has been taken away because too many people abuse it.
Lady Macaiodh
you guys are missing the whole point. it's not even about drugs. first they can randomly test athletes, then they find an excuse to test all students, then all people, then they can bust up into your house w/out a warrant, then the next thing you know martial law is in effect. i'm exaggerating, of course, but the more of our rights are stripped away, the less freedom we have. jeez, isn't there another thread going on right now about how the right to say the pledge in school was taken away... & everyone is mad about that? so what's the difference? just b/c this stripped right to privacy doesn't effect you, you don't care?!? i find that rather outrageous. i think it's b/c the word "drug" was mentioned or something. btw: if a teen wants to do drugs, getting kicked off the team is not going to stop him. kids are remarkably resourceful when it comes to this sort of thing. Guest Matt
Drugs are bad, and illegal. Do you think it is not right to randomly screen lockers for guns?? The police have the right to stop someone on the street if they think he is carrying a gun or drugs. And in school, as I said before, we have no rights to be stripped away. And about the athlete's being screened, they know that is part of the deal when they get into organized sports. They are just dumb enough not to listen. that's why they play sports in the first place. lol. j/k.

The Supreme Court rules on 3 different views.... School, Civilian Life, and Military.... meaning, what applys to civilian life may not apply to School or the Military and visa versa... which is why the school can search your locker or car at any time without a warrant... and exactly why they can now give drug tests.... which I think is great because there's a real simple solution... I think alot of people don't know that about schools and how the Supreme Court rule on certain issues... just because they can give random drug tests in school doesn't mean they will do it in real life to regular civilians... In fact thats unconstitutional.. just like they can't do random house searches.... or random traffic stops, even though they really do...
Amphion
Yes I agrea with QA. I do not mind the test. My school is fully of potheads and I wish they would do something to make it stop. But randomly testing people or testing people just becuase you think they do drugs should not be allowed. Alot of our rights at school do not exist which is stupid. You can get suspended if a teacher sees you smoking...anywhere. You could be on your front porch smoking and if a teacher drives by and sees you your suspended. I dont smoke but I am enraged by this rule. I know they do this at my school but do they do it else where? I agrea that they should be able to do some of the things they do at school, but once you leave the school they should not beable to do that stuff. But like I said about the random things. It can really ruin your reputation over something you did not do. If the principal drags you out of class for a drug test, even though you dont do drugs, you classmates will still remember that. Lady Macaiodh
okay... i guess i was thinking of this as a civilian situation b/c i graduated 5 years ago (wasn't thinking).. so i see your point. but i went to a really strict private school, & some of the stuff the faculty got away w/ would blow your mind... so this is kind of a touchy subject to me. &, btw, on the streets, police have to have probable cause to search you, otherwise the evidence is inadmissable (that is if you don't get a crooked judge). ::walks away muttering about the crapped up legal system:: ::comes back:: i know i'm going to sound like a jackass to you guys, & please don't jump on my case, but this whole thing sucks b/c drugs should not be illegal in the first place, it should be regulated like alcohol. at least then the terrorists wouldn't be able to make money off of it & crime would drop. i won't get into it. Valen
This is very old news... been going on around here for ages. I see it this way, as long as you don't do any drugs, you shouldn't worry about it.
Heaven's Cloud
Hmmm...well I think that you guys have finally hit on the point that I wanted to reach...the supreme court is saying that minors in the US no longer have the final liberties 1. The Right to Due Process 2. The Right against Unreasonable Searches ans Seizures 3. The Right to Privacy Why I have mixe feelings about this issue, I think it is slightly inaccurate that the supreme court catagorizes public schools in a different way then civilian life. Until this ruling they have followed strict constitutional guidelines in dealing with student's rights. They have more or less seperated the church and public schools. They have given school boards the power of decision, thereby forming a local democracy, they have also made it illegal to search a students belongings unless they have reasonable cause. Many of you say that you don't mind getting tested because you have nothing to hide, but if they got you out of class, searched your car (which is now also allowed, if it is on school property), gave you a drug test, and searche your person all because another student claimed you were using drugs, wouldn't you fell the least bit violated?
Nebula
I will have to go with everyone else on this one. I really don't give a crap what they test me for, I am clean. I don't do drugs, and I don't plan on ever doing them. The only people it should bother are the people using drugs. I don't see why a person, who knew they were clean would be mad at the concept of a drug test. Just my thoughts.

Maybe in some way, but overall no. I'd think it was funny if someone thought I was doing drugs. And then when everything came out negative I'd rub it in everyone's faces. Everyone's personal habits/beliefs aside, one thing stands: it's illegal (<----- key word there) for a minor to drink alcohol, to smoke cigarettes (yes, in quite a few states you have to be 18), and use any other substance that is illegal PERIOD, like pot and crack, etc. This applies to plain ol' civilian life, but this issue is addressing school standards, so they're going to be a little tighter anyway. The reason why they're having all these searches is because people who are underage continue to use substances which, by law, they are not allowed to use. If young people would just STOP doing drugs and drinking underage- at school at least (in our state a minor can drink in their own home)- then there wouldn't be a NEED for all of the searches and tests and whatever else. See? Solution found: don't do drugs (while in school). Wow, I'm glad this has already been established.
