Nintendo and their addictive games...

Have you ever noticed how all of the good games for sony, and countless other companies were just good? Nintendo's good games were always addictive. I have played the first pokemon game I got (blue) for 78 hours. That is alot. Unfortuanatley SSB.
doesn't have a timer thingie because I bet it would be at least 1000 hours. Yes, I buy other systems and play other games, but Nintendo's are all so addicting. What are the most addicting games you have, and how much do you play them?

Well, that is true but there are still plenty of addicting games on other consoles, but Nintendo is the King of addicting games.
The most addicting game I have would have to be Mario Tennis, I play at least an hour or 2 every day.

Heh, I feel for the well-being of this topic. ;)

It all depends on opinion for each game, and it's not like there arn't any addictive games on other consoles. Each gaming system has their share, and it's not right limiting that to one. Other well-known addictive titles for other systems include Halo, Metal Gear Solid 2, and Devil May Cry, to name a few. Don't get me wrong, Nintendo has their share too, like Super Smash Bros Melee and Perfect Dark, but it's really hard to single them out.

I do agree, however, that Nintendo bases their games on fun factor, other than the titles of big franchises, like other systems may do. And for this, Nintendo has the biggest chance of winning this generation's console race. :)

LOL, that makes me laugh. . but then again, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But in all fairness, yes, each system does have their own addictive collection of games, and I also sound off that Nintendo has the biggest library of those, whichever system you want to name. I find myself going back to old N64, SNES, even NES games for their total fun factor, and pure addictiveness.

Playstation 2 has a few good ones out there . . and there there is the PS1 and X-Box, and some of Sega's systems. . but well. . those last few don't come close in my book.

Another thing that really helps Nintendo with addictiveness is the speed at which you can play ANY game. Nintendo games (yes, even the GAMECUBE) are just so fast to load. Sony and Microsoft don't come anywhere close in my opinion. ^_^

Ooooh, boy... Yes, Nintendo certainly does have a lot of games that you just can't seem to put down. (Don't get me wrong, I agree that other systems have games like that, but it seems like they just don't have as many). My first real experience with a Nintendo game was Super Mario Kart, on the SNES... And let me tell you, I played that game for years! (No, I'm not exaggerating, I literally played that game every day or almost every day for a couple years). Finally I started playing Super Mario World, and I played that through about five times, all together, plus I would just go back through and replay the levels after I had beaten the game... And of course, I was still playing Super Mario Kart at the time... :toothy:

It was just this urge, that I really wanted to play those games... I had to play those games... I'd just start thinking about them, and then I'd have to go and play them. :twitch: This continued with other games, through the later days of the SNES and through the days of the N64 (oh man, don't even get me started on Super Smash Bros. ;)). Now it's extended to the days of the GCN, and especially the GBA, which is fast becoming my favorite system (SNES is still on top right now, but it'll be knocked down to second when the A Link to the Past remake for the GBA is released).

This is the main reason that I prefer Nintendo's systems to other systems. Just because of the sheer number of games that scream "You will play this game!" It seems most of Nintendo's first party games are like this, and that's why I love Nintendo's first party games so much.

Well, um, there's my rant for the day, I guess... But yes, Nintendo's systems do have lots of addictive games...

Noticed I said well-known, because a lot of people like Halo, so I had to include it, but then, I don't really care for it.

On the other hand, if you were referring to Metal Gear Solid 2 when you said that, then I will eat j00!! J/k, LOL.

I don't buy games if they aren't addicting. I have to get at least 40 hours out of a game or else I think its a waste.

I also agree that nintendo is king in this realm. But, it's not just their first party games that give Nintendo the addictive gaming edge, they also have (or in this case, had) great second party game makers. For instance the two most addicting games i've ever played were Battletoads (NES) and Perfect Dark (N64). Both games were made by RARE who became a second party for nintendo during the rein of the Super NES, and just recentely decided to go Third Party.

Yes, there are certainly lots of addictive third party games. I'm sure Metroid Prime, which is being developed by Retro Studios (for the most part), will be plenty addictive.

Where did you hear that Rare decided to go third party, though? From everything I've heard, neither Nintendo or Rare has confirmed or denied it.

I dunno, for games to be addictive to me...they have to have some sort of replay value. Something MGS2 and DMC simply do not have, at least in my opinion.

The only addictive games I have played fairly recently was Frequency on PS2 (still my favorite PS2 game), and SSBM and Monkey Ball on GC. All have things to unlock, good multiplayer and you keep going back to get better scores.

Desbreko, you are right. .neither Rare nor Nintendo have confirmed or denied those rumors. Personally, I think that they are just letting those rumors circulate to torment PS2 and X-Box owners ^_^ That will rule.

Solid Snake - sorry man. I just don't like Metal Gear Solid 2. . or 1 for that matter. The game is just. . well. . boring (and no, it isn't the stealth aspect, I prefer those games over the absolute straight up shooters). I guess the 8 billion hours of mind numbing text and videos that they show also gets pretty boring. Could go on, but I will shut up . . please don't eat me. .

I think the gaming guru Miamoto's been at it for.......before most of us we were born. He knows his way around his own creations and he can design games that he knows a lot of people will buy, even inventing a few strange new genres and ideas along the way. Other companies developing for the GCN already have their experience in 3D and they're just perfecting it now so they can work on other things, like making it curiously addictive.

Konami's been known to bring out its own share of addicting games from the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" series to "Dance Dance Revolution," not to mention "Gradius" as well.

Upon thinking about it, I don't belive that Metroid Prime will be very addictive.

The gameplay will no doubt be commendable and the visuals as well. However, without multiplayer support, I, myself, couldn't imagine the title being very addictive at all. Unless of course there are branching paths and multiple endings. Yet, even those features can take a title so far.......

Most of Nintendo's titles are addictive due to storyline taking a back seat to the gameplay. Mario titles for instance, drop the player into a vast world and leave it up to the player to explore.

At the same time, the gameplay is relatively easy to grasp, but enjoyable to master.

Other titles, such as Super Smash Brothers Melee are set up with a simple interface, and reward the player with easily obtainable goodies and challenging secrects that require the use of each mode.

I just see the possibility of Metroid Prime becoming a Metal Gear Solid 2 or Devil May Cry. Although it will have brilliant grahpics and solid gameplay, it might not provide the addictive flavor of other Nintendo games.

Anyway, the most addicitive franchise in my opinion is still the Tony Hawk series. I still play Tony Hawk 2. :drunk:

Well, I think Metroid Prime will be addicting because you get to go around and blow things to pieces, like in the first three Metroid games. Heck, I played Super Metroid for hours on end, just going around looking for secrets and generally trashing any enemies that I saw. So yeah, if Metroid Prime is like the first three games only in a first person view, it'll be addicting for me anyway.

In my opinion, the platforming action and level design really made the Metrioid games.

Just blowing stuff up gets old, lol. Too many developers try to cash in on that feature alone and neglect overall quality. I know that you know this though. I'm not saying that you're a mark for mindless mayhem. Heh heh, judging from your posts I know a lot better than that. ;)

From what I've heard about Metroid Prime, it should retain much of the feel of past Metroids. I just hope that the overall level design is on par with the originals and that the gameplay takes priority over the plot.....

Well, it kind of depends on the game, for mindless mayhem... I did sit around playing Gauntlet Legends for hours, just leveling my character up... :toothy:

But yes, the level design has to be good for it to be fun to run around exploring and looking for secrets, and stuff like that. From what I've heard, though, there's going to be lots and lots of exploring, whch means the level design has got to be good in order to hold the player's attention.

Also, I'm not too worried about there not being enough platform action... One of the face buttons is assigned to jumping (I think it was B), afterall, so there's got to be enough to warrent making one of the face buttons jump. If there wasn't going to be a whole lot of jumping in the game, they probably would have made something like Z jump, and use the other face button for something more important.

I found Conker to be pretty addicting... But it was like a quick burn. I played it all I could, and had it completeted in 2 days. I never have played it since. Yeah, that game could be considered addictive... but it's not every something I go back to again and again like it was a drug (I put MGS2, DMC, and RE in that category as well). SSBM and Monkey Ball do that thought, and so does Tony Hawk (like CWB said), which I totally forgot about :).

I have found Pikmin to be very addictive. I keep playing the Challenge Mode over and over again, trying to beat my score. I always thought (before I bought the game) that it sounded pretty boring, but it's actually a great deal of fun.

Over the last few years, in terms of Nintendo games...there are a few that really had me hooked.

The biggest game to truly hook me beyond belief was probably Super Mario 64. When I first bought the game, I played for about three hours that night (I came home with it pretty late at night).

However, the next day, I played five hours straight. And then five hours the day after. lol

I was just amazed by it. I'm probably the world's biggest Mario fan -- he practically brought me up more than my own parents. lol

So, Mario 64 excited me beyond words. And over the first few months of owning it, I played it over and over again...just taking my time to explore the worlds and find the game's secrets.

That is why I am so excited about Super Mario Sunshine (which is looking utterly spectacular, by the way). I can't wait for it...it's probably the most exciting reason to own a GameCube at the moment, for me personally.

Other than that...Ocarina of Time was another game that I became very addicted to. It was wonderful to turn that game on for the very first time and explore Hyrule in three dimensions.

I can see why some Nintendo fans actually cried at Spaceworld 2000; seeing characters that you've known all your life suddenly have new life breathed into them on GameCube...it's a pretty emotional thing. I think that is why there are so many devout Nintendo fans in the world...most of us have grown up with these characters, they've been growing with us for the last two decades. :)

Egh, too much rambling...but I think you all know what I'm on about. :)

Nintendo does have some pretty addictive games alright. I think the game that had me playing over and over was F-Zero. Wow, I had fun with that game, it kept me on the edge of my seat trying to get in first and avoid blowing up.

There are actually a whole mess of SNES I was hooked on now that I think about it, but they were mostly third party games. I lost faith in Nintendo when the N64 was out though. They had games but not as much as the SNES did for me. Mario 64 was really something else. When I saw a video preview of the N64 I was hyped, but was a bit disappointed in the end. I guess its cause of lesser third party support or I was growing out of games:confused:

Anyway, the Metroid game does look fun. It'll be cool to play as Samus through her visor and blast some enemies.:toothy: I remeber the shock I had when I found out it was a girl in that suit too. Not that there's anything wrong with that but it was really cool. Somehow I always thought Samus is a copy of Megman though due to the buster arm, special weapons and robotic feel it had....:therock:

The most addicting games from Nintendo I've played include those from the 64, as I have yet to get a GameCube.

Super Smash Bros and Perfect Dark are two very important titles that come to mind when I think of this.

I got Super Smash Bros on my 12 birthday, and from then on, I couldn't put it down. First I had to get the secret characters, then I had to get the sectret level, and then I had to get every unlockable thing in the game. And even after I finished that, the multiplayer option continuesly left unfinished buisiness, pushing me to strive to beat every person who ever challenged me. To this day, SSB is still a game I love to play.

The other game that I got addicted to on the 64 was Perfect Dark. Although I just got it last Christmas, it is still one game that I play more than any other. In this, it was first the single player mode that I had to beat, which I still havn't. When I got tired of that, I was able to switch to multiplayer, and since I have a brother, and could play on the same team as him and 3 other simulants, and team up against 5 simulants. We had bases, used strategy, and more, which had tons of replay leading us to our 25+ hour time on each of our players. Damn, those challenges are tough, and I'm only on number 17!

So I suppose you're right. Nintendo does have some quite addictive games.
