Baby Kiwi
I'm going off to college at Central Michigan University this fall, and I was wondering if any of you older Otaku members had any advice for those of us who are going to college. Do I need to bring anything specific? Is there anything that I should or shouldn't do? Advice please! :twitch:
BabyGirl
Ack! I just realized that I need advice too! I need help because I won't be living in a dorm, but rather starting out in an apartment with two other roommates that I don't know yet...
Roxie Faye
Lol. This is sort of funny giving advice on college to peopel who are older than me. But, my sis is in college. She's doing the same thing you are, BG, but the apartment is on-campus and she knows the people she's staying with(I think you get to pick them). SHe's also a senior, so that may have smething to do with it... College does or SHOULD give you a list of things you need to bring. I'd also get a small fridge, a hot pot(trust me, VERY useful when the cafeteria food makes you throw up), tums for your upset stumach because of the cafeteria food, one of those fans you put on you window, a swiffer type mop to clean up dust, a cloth to hang up in your area for privacy ONLY if you absolutely can NO stand your roommates, and a dry erase board to hang up on your door. EVEYRONE has one of those. I'm sure there's other things, but I can't think of any right now. For BG, all i can say is: get some one who can cook REALLY well, and BUDGET, BUDGET, BUDGET! You're going to be buying all your groceries(I'm assuming the apartment is off campus, and even if it isn't I'm assuming that the school won't let you eat in the dining hall. If it does, well then screw the grocerys part. You're still going to need a good cook because the cafeteria food will makeyou sick). You're going to need a LOT of things to maintain that apartment, so BUDGET. No buying beer every other night for a party, okay? lol. Transtic Nerve
TV, DVD Player, Computer, Stero, and Bed. And a game system if you have them. And money... and you'll be set.

Queen Asuka
I'd say kitchen utensils, toiletries such as towels and the such, and just about anything you'd take with you when you go camping. And plus all the stuff Transtic mentioned....which I would take camping with me if I went anytime soon...and yeah... FOOD don't forget food...
Guest Morph
I would probably bring what TN and QA said. Maybe not a Bed, just sheets/pillows for the bed. Maybe I wouldn't bring a DVD Player. But I would rather know my roomates first, so then we can talk and bring things like that, but from our own homes, you know split all the things that aren't like toiletries and stuff like it. Justin
I'm taking absolutely nothing. I'll still be living in the same place. ^_^ But I suggest that you take anything you would like to have in your house. You know, food/clothes/bed/a TV/plenty of alcohol/etc. -Justin

Semjaza
If you have a dorm, you'll have to see what they provide. Of course you will get a bed and such... Some will give you a microwave, a phone, a small fridge and will provide you with some sort of computer and internet access. A lot of schools charge extra for you to use these things. The place I went to had a fridge and phone fee. They wouldn't allow microwaves in the rooms though, we had to go down the hall. Of course you need clothes and whatever else, but I'd think that was a nobrainer. Just try to bring a lot of school supplies so you don't have to think of it later. Other than that... basically anything TN said. I'd also grab lots of snacks and stuff, because cafeteria food is 99% CRAP.

I visited a college last year on a little field trip and the food was EXCELLENT!! :tasty: The only problem was that it costed $4.50 per meal....So you would have to bring ALOT of money. RicoTranzrig
I worry more about the parking now that I have to commute also. Parking can cost a lot and you may not even find a space near your classes.

You're really lucky. And besides, just buy a cook book and you're all set. Also, practice cooking over the summer. Try and make dinner for you family. Remember, practice makes... well, it makes you better at what you practiced. :) I forgot to mention to bring one of those Brita water filter thingys, to purify your tap water. Also, bring sort of flat containers, so you can store some of your clothes and food under your bed(if you're luck enough to have a closet, it ain't gonna fit everything). Some food to get are those chinese noodles that come in packages, ready to eat soup, easy mac, and anything that you can just pop in the microwave and EAT.

Thank God I'm not staying in the Towers. I'd be screwed. I know they have a really good music program, but I'm thinking of going into their teaching programs. It's the best program in Michigan. Are you going to march in the State Marching Band? They're awesome. I love to watch them!
Corey
When my cousin went to college I believe all she brought was a small TV and a cot. She lived on campus with one of her friends. What I would bring, however, is a computer, DVD player, a small fridge, and plenty of food. I can always bum cloths off of people. :)
Heaven's Cloud
Okay, anyone that is college bound, take some notes...here is a list of must have items for any situation. 1. A George Foreman Grill, small size. It only costs twenty dollars, and it is a savior from cafeteria food. They are small enough to use in any dorm room, a must have for an apartment, and they are easy to clean. 2. A mirowave or coffemaker. A microwave is ideal, but, if you can't shell out the cash, a coffemaker will still let you heat up water for soup, pasta, ect... 3. A small fridge...must have in any dorm room. 4. A small lockbox. Keep it in your dresser drawer. Unfortunatly, theft is a problem, even among "trusted" roomates. 5. A second set of toiletries kept in a travel bag. This is essential for any "late night excursions" ;) (keep it in your car, if you have one) 6. At least double the amount of underwear you had in high school (trust me...laundry sucks) 7. Old flip flops to use as shower shoes. 8. If you live in an unfurnished apartment, make sure you have a queen size bed. 9. A very large cup...almost every college town has a bar that has "fill your own mug night". 10. An extra comforter (or sleeping bag) and an extra pillow for friends that visit. ...extra tip...carefully remove all colored paper braclets from bars...you can reuse these to avoid door charges and ID checks... if I think of anything else I'll let you know

Roxie Faye
I think this has been said before. If it is, whoops. Anyways, to BG: Lots of kitchen devices. Ya know, stir fry pan, something to cook rice with, pots and pans, coffee maker, toaster, stuff like that.
