A question of musical taste

Gives me something to do with my spare time. Anyway, we're gettingt WAY off topic here. So, back to point, to define Goth, one must really define the kind of person, rather than the music. If one understands the philosophy, the way of life the Gothicism is, than what the music is just falls into place.

well yeah basically, but im into many sorts of classical, anything with deep vibes i will probably like. One of my faves is O Verona.

To define gothic music i would not narrow it down into narrow categories, like was said earlier it is more a lifestyle.

and by the way slavic(i assume you mean hungarian) dance 5 is by Johannes Brahms.

the tea party sing that song wheres my angel or angel im not sure about the song but i think they good music.

I don't really consider myself goth at all, nor would I be able to identify most/some goth if I heard it unless it was more extreme like Cradle of Filth. I see you mention Manson, to me he was always a type of rock who just appeared to be a little goth. Do I enjoy goth music? Yes, at times. If I here a good band or such I'll listen to them. It's nothing that I'd really go out and buy though. I'd most likely burn it if I wanted. I don't know much about it, but I do have a certain respect for it.

I do agree that goth is a person, moreso than the music. For music cannot be made without the person.

Yes, the Tea Party do the song Angels. It's off their Interzone Mantras album. They also happen to be the greatest band currently in existence...

When I saw it, it said Slavic, but thanks for the information.

I'm rather surprised at the turn out here. Considering my school of nearly 1000, has a gothic population of probably two, this was a rather refreshing change.

And those two would be... well, when I tried to tie gothic music to gothic people you guys just walked all over me, but I am so used to it by now it took me two pages to figure it out. I KNOW fear factory and a perfect circle aren't gothic, but didn't you just say it doesn't matter? Or was that me... anyway, I'M gothic, or at least I think I am, and therefore music that I think makes me feel goth then it's goth music, or music that goths listen to, like me, because I do. There.
Bach's Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring is beautiful, but Rachmanninoff's 3rd has to be the most gothic peice of classical music ever written. Pachelbel has his one hit wonder, however, Tchaikovsky just kept churning them out. Ahh, classical...

I never heard anyone call Fear Factory or APC gothic before... Fear Factory is just way too crazy, and I stick them into Industrial along with bands like Skinny Puppy.

Lady Asphyxia, yeah Rasputina did that song. They have a few CDs out, but they haven't put anything other than an online single out in quite a while. A lot of people know Translyvanian Concubine from some movies, in which case it was probably the Manson remix.

As for Tea Party, they are one of my favorite bands. I still can't figure out why they simply are unknown in the US. Especially considering how close Canada is. I planned on going to that show in Michigan, but it never happened :(.

Despite the image Tea Party seems to go for, I never really considered them goth... even though a lot of their songs could fit in it. They remind me more of David Bowie and The Doors than anything, especially when they play a lot of the blues style songs they've done.

I still think Transmission is their best CD personally, but I've yet to get Interzone Mantras because I don't feel like importing it. I'm still annoyed that Tangents cost me nearly 30 dollars :).

Ever heard of L'Arc-en-ciel... ..well ... they may just be the most undescovered band ever known... now that is their own fault...the fact that i have not once seen a promo in the state or canada or...well any non-asian country... may be their fault...but i still think everyone should give it a try.... L'arc~en~ciel... :D

Actually, it was by Rasputina. At least, I believe it was. It was on a C.D. and it said the artist was Rasputina. So...I'll go with the obvious and say it was by Rasputina.

I KNOW they aren't gothic, for the SEVENTIETH time now I was MAKING the POINT that because I am gothic, and I listen to it, it is MUSIC that a GOTH likes and THEREFORE is GOTHIC MUSIC TO ME. Goth can't be tied to music if it isn't a music genre. It's a way of thinking. I believe that Fear Factory and APC are gothic, and if you don't agree with me then GOOD I didn't want you to ANYWAY!!!! (well, well, well... I think I may be spending a little too much time listening to cloricus arguing...)

:: Dodges the argument ::

It's still a Rasputina song, regardless of who mixed it :). I think most of their CDs are worth getting... Last I checked there were only like 3, so it won't set you back much (assuming you are going buy and not download :D.

I wouldn't exactly say I'm a big fan about 'gothic' music..... but I've listened to some o Ozzy's songs... :bawl: too bad he won't be showing up anytime soon at the Ozzfest....

Yeah, I was planning to buy. Which CD would you say would be the best?

By the way, who cares about logic? The most of human kind live on feelings as opposed to logic; all Raven is saying is that because Goth isn't a music genre, but a way of life and a belief, technically, you can't define Gothic music. Sure, there is the basic belief that Gothic music is darker and heavier (typically not Holly Valance pop stuff), but apart from that, I see no rules...

In truth it's too vague to define.

I would say check out "How We Quit the Forest" and "Thanks for the Ether." Both are quite good. I also like "Transylvanian Regurgitations... but it's a remix CD. It's far different from their other CDs, which mainly consist of cello for the music.

I think you are failing to see that nearly everyone here, and in general, has different ideas of what goth should sound like. I listed several bands that most people consider "gothic" right now, but you insist they aren't because they are goth rock or whatever else. Siouxie and the Banshees in truth are more rock-like than half the other bands I listed.

In fact, a good deal of people consider them an early punk band. They were inspired by the Sex Pistols in the first place. I know a lot of people who consider Siouxie goth, but just as many don't.

If you are hung on genres, goth itself is huge and encapsulates many sounds. If you just wanted to talk about specific bands (which mainly seems to be Siouxie), I think you should have said so in the first place. I really don't think the definition of gothic music begins and ends with what you think it does.

Not like I'm annoyed by it or anything, as I don't think it's super important. Just stating :).

I mention the Banshees a lot because they started the genre as we know it. I would not however call them good in any way shape or form. I was referring to the inability to define goth as a music genre, and Raven's rather sophistry-like argument.

Looking back on it I understand your point, Harlequin. It's hard to considering all the people that are addressing things in here :).

I find it rather odd that one would think that the genre of music is determined on whether or not you listen to it or not. Considering a band goth just because you are gothesque and listen to them is rather strange. If someone who is a metalhead likes Selena for some reason... it doesn't make Selena metalhead type music. I don't quite get your reasoning there :).

Life would be much easier if we kept music in simple groups like Rap, Rock Country, etc... All these sub-genres give me a headache.

Well, the borders around goth anyhting aren't as clearly defined as say, the borders around country and western, rap, etc. and that is why it is difficult to define what is and what is not gothic music. And just because siouxie and the banshees started the subculture, doesn't mean that things havent changed dramatically since then. If anything I think that it has opened up a whole lot more. I'm starting to regret giving you that essay, Harlequin, it may have gone to your head.
Those two bands are early punk bands, gothic subculture stemmed from punk. The batcave was a punk nightclub, originally. It still is....
