My massive writing skills

No, I'm not here to brag. I'm not the best, I'm far from the best. Though I'm far from the worst, too...very, very far...

Anyway, I was just wondering. I'm posted twenty to thirty RPGs in the past, though not necisaraly here. Only two or three of them have been successful.

I'm wondering...is this becasue I suck at RPGs, because I write too much, or becasue it's just random chance?

By writing too much, I mean I cover every aspect of the game world before anything starts. I like detail. For an example, go to my Vampire: the Masquerade or The Legend of Zelda: Gannon's Return RPGs in the Sign Up section. Long, no? But detailed.

What's my problem? Don't like the detail? Think they're bad RPGs with bad storylines? Or do people simply not go to them?

I don't really know what the point of this thread is...

I don't think detail is bad at all. But making an RPG every five seconds isn't good either, depending on how much effort you want to put in once the RPG has started.

In other words, if you make this incredible sign up for an RPG and then don't contribute much once it starts...well...there isn't much point...and it becomes more of a non-interactive story than an RPG.

So, it's always important to follow through as best you can.

Whilst our Otaku Adventures forum has been a bit crappy lately, in terms of the quality of new RPGs...I'm sure you'll find that some of the writers here are very formidable when it comes to making RPGs; not just for length, but moreso for quality.

Afterall, you can have something very long but also very poor. Quality is always the key, irrespective of length. :)

The point is to point out my problem, besides spelling and grammar. i no i dont spell two wel, but I'm working on that as best I can.

Oh, I put effort into these. OHHH yes, I put effort. I work on each RPG for about two to three weeks, nitpicking every last detail.

I have had some sad ones, then again, everyone has some sad ones.

And I almost always follow through, unless I don't get a single post after a day. Which happened once.

I find the Otaku Adventures forum frustrating.

In the past I've put ample effort into my rpgs, only to see them die within a short period of time despite my effort. Sometimes I think that my writing is too floaty and that people just don't feel like reading. Such an attitude contradicts with the purpose of the forum, no?

Anyway, I'm not a complainer. In fact, I'm planning an rpg right now that's going to set the bar for excellence in that forum. That is, if people are active once they sign up. ;)

Activity in the forum is something I am concerned with too.

In my Online Another World RPG, I ended up choosing a large number of people...I even put in effort to make avatars/icons for them.

And in the end, most didn't have the courtesy to make some effort and "stick it through". And for me, it's kind of a waste...I mean, it discourages me from putting in any effort at all.

But if people who put in effort are rewarded by strong commitment, I think we will only see the number of GOOD RPGs increase over time.

The main problem with RPGs right now is people are trying to hurry. They want to be a part of the big picture, but yet they just throw out any old crap, which is what we try to discourage. Thus, people are pushed farther away from their goal, yet they try harder to get closer. It's a cycle.

The cure for this disease? Taking your time. Devise a perfect of a plot as you can. James might remember me planning an RPG which would be on par with the greatest RPGs out there. Actually, I'm still trying to come up with ways to perfect it. Over MONTHS of time. That's how you make an RPG. Planning is step one. Participation is two. If you have a nice plot which flows, yet has some nice twists at the same time, members will willingly give their heart and soul to it like you did.

Another way of making a sucsessful RPG is having friends with superior post qualities. Then, with your friends in the RPG with you, along with other promising members, you know your RPG is in for a sure-fire good time.

How do I know all of this? Past experiences.

I know that I haven't rp'ed very much myself, but I agree with SS. Time, effort, and thought are the main things that need to be focused on. Without these three, you get garbage.

I'm not the worst rp'er, and I'm definitly not the best, but I know a little about what I'm talking about. Just focus on those three things, and you'll go far.

Perhaps you should check out the thread related to that in the Sony Forum, wristcutter.
Sexual Content isn't everything.
If you think that then you are most likely going to be one of the people that buys Dave Miera XXX when it comes out.

A good RPG needs to have a good plot, like SS and many others said.
It also needs flow. You have to be able to go somewhere with the story. I find that to be the reason many, not all, RPG's die.
Detail is good, to an extent. To much detail = boring as Juuthena said.
I can't wait to see your RPG SS.
It sounds great.

I signed up to your Masquerade rpg, but then I sign up to just about any fantasy rpg. But yes, your main problem is too much detail. if nothing else, paragraph things like your sign up. Make it more user friendly. Your plot isn't that bad, the last part (your story), could use a bit of work, but I still doubt it's that. Enough said.

What are you talking about, James? Most of the people you let in are active posters. In fact, everybody except ssjchic has posted, and I don't even think she's a member here anymore.

Don't get discouraged, dude. I think it's a great RPG, and I'm sure all the other regular posters (9 out of 13 by my count) think the same thing.

I agree with Char! about James's rpg. I know that I post as much as possible, but its rare to get a chance. Perhaps if all the storylines entwined, and people weren't just making filler posts...

Anyway. My theory is that people are just getting less and less interested in rpgs. I mean, I put weeks of effort into my Desolation rpg, and the only people that signed up were people who know my rpg style, and tend to like it. I've seen several other situations like it.

actually i would love to give some a whirl but my computer use is a bit unreliable so i don't want to start in one and end up not posting. I only one i will post with is if my friend around here will make one or i do, that way i can tell him why im not posting and he will understand. We have quite a bit of fun as you can tell by my sig.

Some times RPG's just don't take off. I've seen some good ones get ritten and then just left, people sing up and then don't post, sad.

And for the 22 stupid peopel that have asked Harlequin what the "22nd time..." thing on his nick is. Are you just stupid or have you got a medical condition that stops you from thinking about things and coming up with the answer?

For the OAW RPG...I'm considering ditching it.

As much as I put a lot of work into the Sign Up, I feel that most people aren't interested anymore.

Granted, Char! and Harlequin have been posting along with me (and posting very well, too)...but consider how many people originally signed up (and how many actually got in).

I'm thinking of starting another RPG in the future, but it's kind of difficult because I don't want to put in a lot of work, for fear that it will die very quickly.

Of course, it could be that my RPGs just suck and nobody is interested lol. But if that were the case, why would people sign up?

I think that if people sign up, they should at least try to go through with it. *shrug*

Anyway, that's my rambling for now...lol

I know what you mean. My first RPG may have had fourteen pages, but the fourteen pages moved everyone five feet from where they started. They weren't even paying any attention to the main plot, they were making up their own.

Agh.

Maybe I should make a Digiparty instead. That way, the entire point is to make up the plot.

Yeah...

Unfortunately, I've never been overly good at them.

With rpg's on these boards, the basic problem is that people don't like detailed rpgs. They prefer to post nonsense all day long... which is why the majority of rpgs here are terrible.

Even an rpg with a group of people considered to be "good members" might still turn out to be boring (Take James' many great attempts at rpgs, no offense of course.) The story is only one part of an rpg as a whole, character interaction is what keeps people posting...

Hmm... I want to start an rpg now.... *wanders off*
