Problem with the boss

I'll call him "Bob"--he's the General Manager at my place of work, and generally an all around nice guy. His vices? Well, he's 27, really handsome--and he knows it. >_< He feels like he has to be everyone's friend.
The problem? A joke gone bad.

See, yesterday, I was in a good mood at the beginning of my shift. A lot more chatty than I usually am with everyone--workers and customers alike. Except for Bob. I was a little sore about a mandatory meeting Sunday taking place at a bad time for me, so I was upset a little with the managers. And I decided to playfully give him the cold shoulder...'cept I got a little too carried away. In a few minutes, he was PO'ed major time (I've only seem him honked off this bad one other time), and started asking me all these questions--what was my problem, why was I ignoring him, was this going to affect our working relationship (I thought that meant I was going to be fired)? Frankly, I was scared for my job, and mumbled something about being sore about the meeting. He told me I could have gotten out of it (which isn't true--they wouldn't have taken "oh, I got to go to church like usual" as a viable reason (not to say they have anything against church--they don't), and told me something along the lines that I better shape up or ship out.
I'm possibly contemplating transferring to another store that's closer to me. I'm just not sure if the new store will honor my preferred schedule like this store does. All I can say is that this little incident has mutated my friendship with Bob.

So what do you think I should do? Transfer? Grin and bear it? Realize that I brought it on myself and get over it?

Well, you mentioned that he's a pretty friendly guy and as you said, this is just a case of a joke gone bad.

I don't think that this makes him feel more important, because you noted that he only went off like this one other time.

If this store accommodates your schedule, then I suggest you stay.

This whole problem with Bob will blow over, since he doesn't seem like a particularly cruel guy.

Ignoring your boss wasn't really a mature thing to do, lol. Can you really fault the man anyway?

I think this Bob person was overreacting big time, maybe he was just in a bad mood or something. I would try to talk to him about it before this mess gets even bigger.

Wow, this guy sounds like my dad a bunch, have a joke and push it a bit too far and blows his top. Thats why I stay away from my family as much as I can. You really don't want to know the details...-.-

Well, do what I do, Smile and do what he says, be a suck-up for a bit, and I'm sure he will cool it and evently he will go back to the way it was... To add a bit more of stress out, when you are alone somewhere, start venting under your breathe and make sure no one hears you or else your in trouble... Well thats what I do.

My advice is to grin and bear it Ginny, I've had to deal with many attitudes given to me by my bosses. I work at a Tv public access station for the record. Chances are just ignore this incident and eventually it will blow over. If you end up transferring chances are the other store will not honor your beliefs and values as a good way to have a special schedule.

I think you should just stay right where you are, Ginneh. I'm sure he'll get over it.

However, that doesn't mean you shouldn't check out the other store. Maybe it will accomidate your needs. Then, hey...less gas money spent on driving farther.

*eyes Justin's comment* "Ginneh!" :therock::laugh: Like I don't hear that all the time!

Small update: Well, I worked with "Bob" again today. :twitch:
Luckily, there was another manager as well today (who's comically angry at me for denying the honor of sharing in his secret stash of Twinkies :D (and for all you dirty minded people, STOP THINKING LIKE THAT!)), so I didn't talk to Bob much. I remember to say hi to him, and make a little more eye contact, so he wouldn't think I was ignoring him again. Still a little frigid between us.
I'm going to look into the closer store, regardless. If it does allow for my preferred schedule, then I would like to transfer to a place that is closer to home.

I think that the best thing to do is just tell him what you told us -- that you were just being playful and not really serious.

Obviously he took it too far...and it was just a misunderstanding.

If you explain the situation to him and apologize, he'll probably be completely fine about it.

And as has been said...if this place allows for you to have flexible working ours (within reason), then there's no reason to change.

In the end, it's all about how you feel...I mean, whether you feel comfortable there or whether you feel like there is something else that better suits you.

Well, see, but that's my problem--I'm not really sure how I feel about it. Like I said, right now it's frosty between us. I value him like a friend (don't you hate it when your friends fight with you?), but with this instant, heavy is the reminder that he is the boss, and me a peon. At this point in time, I'm dreading to go to work, and even more so to crack any more jokes. And that is a problem, because one of the *ahem* rules is that we are supposed to have fun at work. And if I'm uncomfortable at work...well, then. Leaving for work soon, so I'll let you all know how it goes...again. Thank you all for listening and for your advice--I really appreciate it.

Sheesh, never thought those in power could be so sensitive! *smiles at Adam* Oh yeah....j/k!

Well, Ginny...as I said, maybe you should just tell him what you told us. :)

Maybe if you just tell him that you feel uncomfortable and that you just want things to get back to normal...he'll be okay with that and things will work out. :)

I think it's worth trying to patch things up, for the sake of your job and your sanity. ;)
