Adding Things to Classic Characters

Maybe this is just me but I havn't played Super Mario Sunshine, but could Mario share the same fate as Luigi when they gave him the vacuum, maybe adding accesories to characters isn't a good idea. Luigi's Mansion seemed to most like a disappointment maybe because of the vacuum IMO.I know Mario will be a big hit in the States but could this be the new trend in the Mario Bro's series.

Referring to the topic starting post, I feel completely opposite on my opinion regarding new ideas being added to old characters.

When new abilities or features aren't added, we run into a problem. Think about it. We've been playing the same Mega Man and Tomb Raider games for years, and they're obviously not progressing in popularity, heh. Due to the fact that Mega Man experiences slight variations in special ability when he defeats a boss, it's not quite as bad....but you get the idea.

Innovation is what allows the same characters to evolve as years past. Let's face it; no one wants to play the same game for twenty years. ;)

I don't think it was so much that new things were added to the franchises... Like in Luigi's Mansion, I had no problem with the basic idea of the vacuum. I don't know that anyone else did really either. The actual problem was that there wasn't much to do with it. You suck things up, and that is really it. Sure you get water, fire and ice... but really they didn't add much. The game was also repetitive in design. I'm sure if they applied themselves a lot more could be gotten out of it. I loved Luigi's Mansion. I played it to death...until I beat it at least. It only took me a total of 3 and half hours my first time through, which I think is a big problem.

SMS doesn't seem to have this problem. There are so many aspects to the water pump, and you have true 3D freedome to do whatever you want... which is totally unlike Luigi's Mansion. SMS is still a Mario game, it just had more added to it. Luigi wouldn't have been much of anything without the vacuum. I think that's the big difference.

I definitely encourage people to read PlanetGameCube's SMS review -- it was stated that an average gamer would need 30+ hours to beat the game, whilst an experienced player would need 25/25 hours.

I think that's excellent for a platformer. The addition of new abilities (the water pack, for example) really helps to expand gameplay in ways that have never been done before.

This also potentially adds greater life expectancy to games.

That is very true, how can someone say editions to a game make it a worse game. I don't understand that concept at all. While I admit Luigi's Mansion wasn't all I expected it to be, it was a nice change of pace. Jumping on little creatures heads would suprisingly get boring after so much of it.
New innovations are what good games now are about, and usually they are pretty hard to come by. Take Pikmin, a simple little that fills you with joy while you play. Would it had been as fun if you jumped on their heads? I think not!

And for one thing I do not think a jet pack or water pack would return in a later non- sunshine game. As a vacuum for Luigi would not return in a non-Manshion game.

In all fairness I think that nintendo did a great job of innovating classic characters, ex. Mario and Luigi!

ps- has anyone seen the new Mario Sunshine us commercial. Its quite funny!

Well like most people have said, adding these new things IS a good thing. And the thing that was disappointing in LM was how short and simple it was.

I don't know how SMS will be, but it seems, IMO, to be similar to LM, except more happiness type of thing and longer. Plus, Mario has a new gadget, like Luigi's vaccuum, except that he has more of a variety to using it, when Luigi's vacuum's abilities was the Fire, Water, Ice and Ghost-Sucker abilities.

BTW, I found the SMS commercial for US very funny!
