Hyper
I was going to download music from my computer and realized that the thing i wanted to use (audio galaxy) had closed down. I was going to use another one (kazaa) but i was told kazaa messes up your files. I think i am going to go with bearshare but i'm not sure. What should i do? wrist cutter
WinMX, definitely winMX.
RicoTranzrig
There's no real danger in using Kazaa...I use it sometimes and the only downside to it is a lack of files that I'm looking for and a constant Ad bombardment every single hour. (Keep the Virus filter on though). WinMX is really good if you're looking for a particular song, plus its easy to setup.
Kinetic
Kazaa would be a better choice than BearShare, for the pure fact that BearShare doesn't have much for download. I don't download much, but I'd say go with Kazaa
Juu
two words, BearShare sucks. It doesn't download, it's just wa~y too slow, and it doesn't have a big selection of songs. I've had it before, so.. And btw... I thought it was illegal now for downloading music off the internet... *shrugs* that's what I heard on cnn...
wrist cutter
It's always been illegal.
DeathKnight
Yea. It's Illegal. And it's fun, and easy. So it's all good. Defying the law, while getting stuff you need easily. ^^ Kazaa is a medicore one. I'm stuck using it simply because I havent found anything much better on the p2p software sharing side. O_o WinMX I have never tried. Heh. But alot of people say its the best.
PiroMunkie
In my opinion, if you just plan on downloading songs, go with WinMX. However if you want software, Kazaa is the better choice.
Hyper
so i guess i should go with WinMX huh?
wrist cutter
Yes! If everyone would stop debating over this, then there would be more files for all.

Semjaza
The absolute best things to use are IRC or FTPs (assuming you can find some). They get good speeds and generally have entire CD downloads. I used to use WinMX, but it's ridiculous how much is queued and NEVER downloads. Unless you are looking for really common stuff that dozens of people have, you're going to have download problems. At least I do. I generally use Kazaa Lite or I-Mesh. They use more RAM than they should, but at least the downloads start most of the time. Bearshare, Limewire, Blubster, Morpheus and most of the others are trash in my opinion.
Hyper
i am just gonna go with WinMX because i wanna play it safe and i am gonna look for a particular song.
its ridiculous how much is cued and NEVER downloads.
what do you mean by that?
Semjaza
I meant queued, not cued lol. Basically, you are in line to get it... but your turn never comes up, or takes ages. I've had times on Winmx where my number in line went farther back for no good reason. Sure, there are things telling you how long it should take, and how many people are queued... but they rarely seem to update, and most of the time are just plain wrong. Hyper
i just copied it wrong.lol. But did you get the song?
Transtic Nerve
There's a new bill going into congress that says that a special agency against internet piracy would have the right to secretly hack into your computer and shut the internet down forever if they catch you downloading music or video. This bill hasn't passed yet, and probably won't. It just goes to show that alot of you need to keep track of whats going around you as far as legalization of things on the internet. I'm not sure how they will end up enforcing this law. It'll be almost impossible, and yet another way for America to waste money on things they can't stop. Semjaza
It could be even worse really... That bill would make it alright for companies to send any virus they wanted to your PC. Going so far as to stop the computer from even booting in the first place. It would be completely legal at that.
Mnemolth
Oh good grief TN, that has to be one enormous leap you just took. Talk about hyperbole! I have no idea what you're on about, never read anything about it, or anything about the bill, but I can pretty much say from my ignorance that what you just said is nothing more than pure unadulterated scare-mongering, and verges on total crap if it isn't already there. :) But that's OK. We all do the occasional BS. Well, on any Board, the propensity for BS goes up a couple of degrees, but I digress...;) As for the legality of downloads, it was NEVER illegal to download songs, or videos, or software. Just the ones with copyright on them, and which gave you no rights to distribute them. Which basically covers everything you want to download I guess, but there's a VAST ocean of software & songs out there where you ARE entitled to download them. Stuff like Linux, game patches, demo songs, first releases, etc.
Semjaza
You do realize that 99% of things people are downloading are copyrighted and not given away for sharing at mp3.com or something simliar. I've never seen anyone say "Go download the new NWN patch on Kazaa!" or "Get the update for Redhat Linux vX.XX!" It's always "Go get this illegal cracked copy of Photoshop!" or "Get so and so's new song." The bill is covering all the stuff that music companies want. They are going after those who download stuff they shouldn't, not stuff they should (and then patches and non-copyrighted songs would not count). I'm sure most people here go and download Linux lol. Most freeware is easily available on sites and their FTPs as it is. Think what you want, but programs like Kazaa, IRC, WinMX, etc are ALL about piracy. Despite what they say to get the law off their back.

Esspecially since you have no idea what I'm talking about. Watch the news sometime and then maybe you won't look like an idiot. I said what I heard from that newscaster lady. There's the article with better information.
[b] As for the legality of downloads, it was NEVER illegal to download songs, or videos, or software. And the only way to stop the downloading of what is illegal is to stop it in a whole. If people weren't downloading illegal things, we wouldn't be having this dicussion.
