The same actually even applies for El Hazard. Dubbing always cuts out a translation or scene. Its the way anime dubbing companies work. If you want examples, I'll list. As for the topic, IMO, mainstream is anything that is extremely popular, enough to have toys, games, spin-offs, movies, etc. I really don't mind if it's mainstream in America or not. It won't keep me from watching it, especially if it is a good show or movie. I'm one of the many who loved Akira. Mainstream and dubbed are not the same thing IMHO, because there are a crap-load of anime that have been dubbed over here on our ports, yet completely unknown or overlooked all together. Besides the most adamant anime fans, who knows of shows like Soul Taker, Evangelion, Perfect Blue, GTO, Excel Saga, etc. etc. etc.? It may be a rather minor difference, but you're already losing out on the original version. I bought the Lain DVD, so after I watched the subbed version, I watched the dubbed version just out of curiosity, and they changed the name "Arisu" to "Alice". O.o That was surprising, and especially because Lain isn't a network anime or anything, that was just plain editing. I'm assuming they would call it "uncut", but it really was altered. Switch R and L (which is an easy thing to do with Japanese names) and switch S and C (because they sound the same) and the name sounds easily like Alice-oo. It's a long shot, but it happens. Sheesh. After all, we're alot less liberal about stuff like that then your Network tight-arses in the states (see, I said 'arse' like it was nothing!). Besides, I don't want to go and spend money on DVDs or VHS's that are $64NZ a pop. I simply do not have that type of money, especially to waste on something I'm perfectly happy with, and have already seen. Oh, and get this, I'm not importing the End of Evangelion DVD until it's released [i]dubbed[/i]! Gosh, I'm such an Otaku Anarchist. And is it just me, or am I the only one here who [i]does[/i] find the Japanese voices annoying? Sure, they're not all bad, but sometimes they're quite easily worse than the english voices. I didn't think the dub was all that bad, but I bought the DVDs, so I have both versions.... I never really got into Eva that much even though I've almost finished the series. I dunno, maybe that was because of the dub... But I started watching it in dub before I got into watching anime subbed, so it was hard to watch the whole thing over again subbed.... That's how his character is defined throughout the series until the very end? As for the English Dub of Eva, I don't approve of it much, it ruined many great characters.
