There was a study a couple of years back that and I remember it saying that the chances of alien life was like 1000 to 700. Also it said that the chances of us coming in contact with them was like 1000 to 200. That's just what I think it was I'll try to find that magizine.

Lower intelligence than...what? Humans. With an Intelligence Quotient of....? We'll say average...but that depends on age. So what age? We'll say thirty. But there are all kinds of variables.

Now, I'm going to assume here that you mean, if they were of 'lower intelligence,' they would not have the same technological sophistication, meaning they could not achieve space travel. Correct?

Suppose there was a 'genius' somewhere in there. Even one, with the right leadership skills, could direct others to perform tasks or manufacture items they didn't understand. And they would be able to absorb and learn. 'Specially if they got an electric zap when they did the wrong thing. :p

Imagine daVinci actually getting a flight-capable machine in the air, and it being accepted and duplicated. Hundreds of years ago, and we'd've had flight. Consider how far we came from the Wright brothers, in about a hundred years. Imagine where we might be if the technology had gotten a foothold before then.

Would we necessarily be 'of higher intelligence' than we are now? Not on that basis alone, certainly.

I'm sure there are a few of you who could tear this post to pieces. You really don't have to, unless it would give you great pleasure.

By intelligence, I assume Trumen is referring directly to technological capability.

Afterall, when we talk about "intelligent life" we are usually talking about life that is capable of using (at least) basic language/communication and presumably some kind of technology.

So...I think the whole issue of variables is irrelevant. Astronomers aren't looking at it in that kind of detail; they're only going to be worried about discovering life that is capable of any kind of basic communication. That would be what we consider "intelligent life".
