Microsoft Game Studios Announces 'Halo 2' and 'Project Gotham Racing 2,' Highly Anticipated Sequels to Top-Selling Xbox Games

NEW YORK, Aug 08, 2002 /PRNewsire-FirstCall via Comtex/ -- It's time again for gamers to assume the role of Master Chief, protecting humanity with a powerful armory of guns and grenades as they battle the relentless Covenant scourge. It's also time for gamers to be among the first to grab the steering wheel of a shiny new Enzo Ferrari and race through the streets of some of the world's most exotic cities.

Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) today announced at the X02 North America event that "Halo(TM) 2" and "Project Gotham Racing(TM) 2," sequels to best-selling Xbox(TM) games from Microsoft Game Studios, are in development for the Xbox video game system. "Halo 2," developed by Bungie Studios, is expected to arrive on store shelves for the 2003 holiday season, and "Project Gotham Racing 2," developed by Bizarre Creations, is due in early 2004.

"Halo 2," a sci-fi action/first-person shooter game, is a full sequel to the best-selling original and will continue the story of the Master Chief, a genetically enhanced supersoldier who is the only man that has successfully defied the Covenant, a coalition of alien races on a murderous march toward Earth. "Halo 2" surpasses its predecessor both in graphical beauty and combat intensity. The Master Chief and his marine allies return to battle the full complement of Covenant forces, as well as new enemies who have not yet revealed themselves. "Halo 2" also expands the Master Chief's already substantial arsenal with powerful new weapons, many pried from the twitching claws of defeated enemies, as well as more than twice as many drivable vehicles for exploring vast landscapes or speeding into battle. In addition to its epic single-player campaign, "Halo 2" will be playable online through Xbox Live.

"Project Gotham Racing 2" returns to city streets with new fully licensed vehicles from major car manufacturers including Ferrari and Porsche. This engaging racing game sequel includes more than 50 vehicles as well as new cities, including Edinburgh, Scotland, and Hong Kong. More ways to earn Kudos will be available, as well as a new rating system, a more accurate way to rank players rather than just by the number of Kudos they have earned. "Project Gotham Racing 2" also enables gamers to play online through the Xbox Live service.

"There's only one thing better than announcing a sequel to a million-seller," said Ed Fries, vice president of Xbox Game Content at Microsoft Game Studios. "And that's announcing sequels to two 1-million-unit-selling games. Our 'Halo' and 'Project Gotham Racing' franchises have redefined the shooter and racing categories around the world with innovation, great gameplay and pure fun. 'Halo 2' and 'Project Gotham Racing 2' will build on these legacies with awesome new features and the thrill of playing anyone anywhere using Xbox Live."

"Halo: Combat Evolved" reached the 1-million-units-sold mark faster than any other Xbox game in North America and was named Game of the Year by the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences, Electronic Gaming Monthly and IGN.com. "Project Gotham Racing" was nominated for Console Racing Game of the Year by the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences. It joined the select million-seller club during the past month.

At the X02 North America event, third-party publishers such as Electronic Arts(TM), Sega(R) of America Inc. and Capcom(R) showed off their holiday titles, and Bose Corp. is helping Xbox showcase the power of the console's unique Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound capabilities through the use of the new Bose Freestyle audio system.

Gamers don't have to wait until 2003; they can get their fix of great Xbox games this holiday season with "Blinx(TM): The Time Sweeper," "Brute Force(TM)," "Kakuto Chojin(TM)," "MechAssault(TM)," "NBA Inside Drive 2003," "NFL Fever 2003" (available now), "Quantum Redshift(TM)," "Sega Sports(TM) NFL 2K3" (Sega(R) of America), "Panzer Dragoon(TM) Orta" (Sega(R) of America), "Shenmue II," "Sneakers(TM)," "Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell(TM)" (Ubi Soft(R) Entertainment), "Unreal Championship" (Infogrames), and "Whacked!(TM)."

Anyone that pays attention should know that both of these games were announced during the whole Xbox Live conference at E3. But, this is the first true completely official announcement on it. PGR2 looks the same as the last one, but they have a year to improve on it. Halo 2 is looking good though. The main difference so far seems to be the lighting. It also seems like they are spending more time on the corridors haha, at least based on this first shot :).

I would like to see how Halo 2 has improved since the last version. Since I wasn't a big fan then, I hope this can change my mind.

However, I loved Project Gotham Racing and that screenie you provided looked very nice indeed, if a little similar graphically.

I know this is a bit off topic, but I know a guy who went to college with Bill Gates and developed an OS superior to Mr. Gates' Windows, although he couldn't sell it as fast as the now multi-billionaire..

Ahh! Now this is what I'm talking about.

This is why I haven't bought an Xbox yet. All the really big hitters are going to be appearing next year.

Halo 2 is looking very nice...and there are a number of other must-have Xbox games that I'm personally looking forward to.

I'm going to be creating a new thread about one of them soon. :)

DOA:Xtreme Beach Volleyball will be at the top of my list.. lol

Seriously though, I've seen a 4 second running demo of Halo 2 and a bunch of stills, it had a lot of enemies on screen at once, and when I say a lot I mean about 100, possibly more.

I hope it really pushes the XBox to it's limits in terms of graphics and speed. I do have to mention the stills and video footage I saw of Halo 2 was of poor quality, so maybe it can't have that many enemies on screen at once.

Cool, that looks way more advanced than the original...kinda looks like Doom 3. I don't think the graphics'll chug that much since it's running on a Geforce 3...but bungie should be able to harness the system, much like what konami did with MGS2. Those screenshots certainly got my attention.

I belive the Xbox uses a modified GeForce 3 though, and it has a lot of features that would otherwise only be found on GeForce 4.

It does really look just about as good as Doom 3 I think... Without some of the horrible character design (I mainly hate the rubber looking monsters in Doom 3 so far). Lighting is excellent, although based on the Doom 3 gameplay video that was bootlegged...Doom 3 still has it beat lol.

Looks sweet either way... I hope it isn't as tedious and repetitive as I found the original. Here's hoping.

I have to be honest, I really do not see that big of a difference between Halo and Halo 2. It seem like they want to improve the future look of the walls and halls like what was said before. The lighting, yes. Besides those already said, it just seems like the same ole' Halo. Yes, I am I huge fan of the first, but if the new one is going to be around the same as the first, I probably won't be spending my money on it. Hopefully they improve some stuff before it is released.

I've read the latest Electronic Gaming Monthly magazine earlier and they had an Halo 2 exculsive article... By god, the stuff I've read is damning and haven't even been reported yet... I don't have the time to post all of it now but I'll be sure to edit this post with the details later when I finish reading the article and have time....

Well, they essentially mentioned that the gameplay will not be altered too much. I am kind of glad that they aren't changing the Master Chief's arsenal too much. It felt realistic only carrying two weapons and killing enemies and constantly exchanging artillery.

From a visual standpoint, they're really refining the bump-mapping process. Meaning, that instead of merely implementing it onto objects late in the development cycle, it will be bump-mapping enhanced from the start. The good thing about this technique, according to what I've read and common sense, is that it will allow the developers to include a large number of models on screen at once without relying on large polygon counts to make them look good. Which, of course, is good, considering that the game tries to give us an illusion of large-scale war.

It also seems like they're pleased with the self-shadowing technique they've been able to incorporate. Anyone who has followed the game knows that lighting will be a big part in this one....

The best part about this game though is that when it releases, X Box Live will have been about for quite a while. Meaning, online play should be wicked. Especially with Bungie developing the game.

But, they're not compromising single player either. Thus far, they're touting a more fleshed-out story and the fact that Master Chief's personality will be more well-developed.
