Gavin
OK I haven't started the game in ages primarily because I bought FFX at the start of last month and am playing it all the time, but enough of history I decided to start Gold over and am having just general training trouble like deciding which pokemon to add to my team can anyone help me
Juu
Well, I usually start with my usual team, starting with totodile, then I get myself a pidgey, then a mareep. The pidgey will be very useful as soon as it learns gust. It'll help you in the sprout tower, and beat bugsy with no problem. And, the mareep will help. Trust me with the pidgey though. ^_-
Fall
The Mareep will help you if/once it has thundershock for a move. But you have to raise it a bit for it to learn that..... Start off with a Pidgey in your team, pretty much of the reason Juuthena mentioned above. Then I'd catch a Mareep and a Sentret. They'll become useful to help you through the beginning of the game. :)
Kei
Yes, you really should catch yourself a Pidgey and a Sentret. Also, you may want to catch a Geodude on Route 47. That's the little area where you side-track off to on your way to Cherrygrove City. I believe that they can be caught there, as well as a Jigglypuff, though that won't really serve a purpose...
ifm2181
If you walk around in the dark cave, even without flash, you could catch a Larvitar. Sometimes, they come in handy. or even a Wobuffet.

And Wobbuffet can only be caught on the Blackthorn City side of Dark Cave, or bought in Goldenrod Game Corner.
ifm2181
Hmm... I've found em in there before. But I have Silver, so maybe it's different?
Kuragari
It shouldn't be. You shouldn't be able to catch Larvitar anywhere but Mt. Silver. In both versions o_O;;
Imp
Sorry, Mareep can't be caught until you beat Falkner, the first Gym Leader. I would recommend you at least get a Geodude or Onix. After the first gym, get Mareep. After the second, get Machop, Abra, and Drowzee. (You can trade a Drowzee for a Machop.)

Though I've only battled him during the night time in the game. And.....I've never caught it. Though no, I don't think Larvitar is in Dark Cave either. Boo
Wobufett is only at the blackthorn side and Larvitar is only at the game-corner and MT. SILVER, it isn't at DARK CAVE. That's the true. My bro has gold and I have silve and Crystal (and red) It can't be caught somewhere else than MT. SILVER.
Desbreko
Actually, I've fought a Wobbuffet on the Violet City side of the Dark Cave, but only once. I was Surfing in the first pool of water you get to, and I happened to run into one. I didn't capture it, though, and then I finally just decided to give up after a long time of searching for another. If you want one, just wait until you can get to the other side of Dark Cave where they're more plentiful.
Raichu Tamer
Lavitar can only be caught in silver cave, end of story!:smirk: Wobbuffet can be in dark cave quite near the beginning of the game, i know i found one. Pokemon that you can have in your team are: Pidgey in is extremly helpful when it evovles to its higher forms and if taught fly you will be completely dependant on it for getting around. Pikachu: i would trade one across from another game at a really low level because i find that these pokemon are extremly helpful and that they can be quite powerful if trained correctly. Onix: a very good Pokemon to have because quite a lot attacks don't do a lot of damage to it and then when you have got the Metalcoat you can evolve it into steelix because steelix is cool. Those would be the ones i would have for my team if i started again.
Kei
Since everyone has given great advice and RedXIII has more than likely made it into Kanto by now, this topic doesn't really need to be open anymore.
