Buy it! There are so many great games out right now and more that are coming out soon.

Out now;
Metal Gear Solid 2
Final Fantasy XI
SSX
Grand Theft Auto 3
Gran Turismo
Devil May Cry
ICO
Tekken 4 and Virtua Fighter 4!

Coming out soon;
Xenosaga
Final Fantasy XI
Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance
Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness
Devil May Cry 2
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

And Ps2 just went online so that means more multiplayer games will be coming out soon. I've had my Ps2 almost 2 years and nothing is wrong with it. It still runs perfectly. So it's a reliable system. Buy one ^____~

I'm going to say that you can't really go wrong with a PS2...it's got some great games already and even better games to come (awaiting the 17th for Kingdom Hearts!).

Obviously, the performance (in numbers) makes the PS2 the weakest system...but most quality games run at 30-60FPS so you don't have to worry about slowdown too much. Load times are significantly faster on DVD games than CD's so remember that when buying games. Keep in mind that a PS2 doesn't have a dedicated video card...only a graphics "synthesizer" so the core processor is doing a lot of the work, which explains some of the "dated" graphics in some games, though that's very impressive for a core processor to do all those calculations by itself. But enough about the tech stuff...the only nusiance that I experience is the fan...it's a little loud like a computer's fan.

I recommend you purchase your PS2 at a store such as Wal-mart or Costco...stores that don't really specialize in Videogames since stores like GameStop tend to overprice.

Hmm, I take exception to this thread for a various reasons. For instance, this is a Sony forum, so members will most definitely encourage you to buy it. Secondly, this could quickly turn into a console vs. console fiasco.

If you want to create a thread discussing Sony's online strategy, in an intelligent manner, feel free to do so. Quite frankly, there's no need to argue moot system specs. The consoles don't seem too distant in that area. I mean, numbers may tell you one thing, but for the most part, you'll find nearly identical conversions of titles on each system.

For a completely objective opinion, I encourage you to look at release date calendars or video game retailers to shop comparatively, ultimately picking up whichever console is most compatible with you in price range, third party support, first party releases and online strategy.

Anyway, you did ask for member opinions on performance and such, so I find that as long as discussion remains in the boundaries of the rules, I can leave this open. Especially, since this would be a good time to discuss how many members have problems with DVD playback, etc.

Sorry about this thread being a problem, I just thought I'd ask here since most people in this forum have a PS2(and would presumably know wether it was worth buying.)

What problems are there with DVD playback?

From personal experience, whenever I rent a DVD out and play it on my PS2, at some point in the movie, it just stops and gives me an error. Any used DVD (by another person that I don't know or who doesn't take care of his DVD's) gives me that at some point in a movie...probably because of wear and tear, smudges, etc.

My friend tells me that you'll get about 100 hours of DVD playback before it starts to really show the signs of malfunction.

Hmm, well I don't know about any errors with the DVD playback, to be honest I haven't heard of any errors at all, unless of course I visit American based sites.

They must have made a few changes/fixes to the PAL version of the Ps2...

One of the good things about delayed product releases :D

Boba, it really depends on your personal experience with Video Games. If you like Final Fantasy, then stick with Sony. If you like Mario, stick with nintendo. If you like Halo, stick with Xbox, and so on. From my personal experience thus far with the PS2, I've really only enjoyed a few games. Most of the games these days just seem to be lacking, if only I could go back to the old days... Back on topic, I think the PS2 is an ok system. Not the best, because what really makes a system worth owning are good games. I'd still rather just shell out and buy some used PSOne RPGS like XenoGears and so on that I haven't played at this point in time.

But, really, it's all up to your personal gaming experience.

Here's my two cents. I say its a good buy man. You get a PSONE, a PS2, a DVD Player, a CD Player and maybe even a VCR and a computer in the feature. (Sony plans to give the PS2 Hard Drive the ability to record TV shows. Rumor even has it that it can do that even while you're playing a game)

Forget the spec numbers. By far the PS2 has the most games I'd rather play than the GCN and the Halo-Box. (Halo is the only game I liked on the Xbox so far:confused: ) And not only do you have great games now, but there's still more to come later this year and the Greatest Hits programs is a plus cause some of the best games only cost an easy $30 bucks now (in the U.S. anyway.)

Wear and Tear: I guess that depends on you buddy. Alot of people hasn't had any serious problems with their PS2's yet and some had them since they were released. I have the SPCH-3500 model. Or rather the console they sold when the Gran Tursimo 3 Racing package was out. I had it for a year and it finally showed signs of problems sometime ago. According to a SONY tech, he says that my PS2 has problems reading the disks and therefore takes unacceptable long load times and even game crashes if I'm unlucky. Exactly how it became like this I don't know.... but I do have one very strong answer: My little brother.. He leaves the PS2 on pause for long periods of time.... (Don't worry, he paid for his crimes....:devil: ) The fan issue isn't a factor for me... I barely hear it. I also tend to keep my ps2 as clean as possible so dust doesn't build up on the fan and the vents. (Those anti-dust sprays for electronics are the best)

As for my PS2 problem, Sony's techs are so nice that they decided to waive the repair fee for me even though my warranty expired months ago and all I has to do is send my ps2 console to them with other requested info and they'll get it running back to normal and maybe even suped up (as in newer drivers, parts, etc...) Unforunately.... the time it takes to repair is too long.... 15 business days AFTER they receive it and then 7-10 days to ship it back via UPS Ground (no express). I sent mine in last week Overnight postage so I should be getting mine back until sometime in November. Til then, I've been down graded to Dreamcast, PSX, N65, SNES, GBA, and Genesis status.... a good time to revisit my classics.:)

DVD play back... I often hear depending on which Drivers you have, depends on the performance and which DVD's you can play. Mine had a version 1.2 and I didn't have any problems. The 1.4 did however according to IGN.com

All and all, I say that the newest is the best ones out there since they contain parts that perform better. Last I check any SPCH-3900 or higher are the good ones.
