Final fantasy 11 (worth it????)

As we all know now, ff11 will be online and interactive. But here is my concern. With the game being ongoing, do you think it will take away a certain element that the rest of the series has had? We are all used to the set storylines that have previously been given to us. With the game being ongoing, I can't think of how they can have a set storyline. Do you all think that this will really hurt the game?

Final Fantasy XI sounds awesome. The game is even beatable. And after it's beaten Square will release updates with new bosses and MAYBE even a new storyline. Which would rock. I watched the LiveCam ALL day when it was up. The world looks huge. And hopefully the launch in America won't have as many problems as the launch in Japan. Even if does, I'll wait for them to be fixed. I've been waiting for this game for awhile ^_^

FFXI looks like it'd be fun, but online rpgs are supposed to be different than console rpgs. The characters in online rpgs usually don't have much...development because they want you to...have your own character. I don't think an online rpg would have a main villain type person, that does things that affects you. I'd rather have a giant offline rpg tho, and since FFXI's gonna cost a lot of $$ to get running I'll probably never play it, unless they release a PC version anyway.

Well, they're releasing a PC version in Japan (it might already be out, actually), and I'm most likely going to get it if it's released on the PC in the US.

About not really having a storyline, well, I've heard that it does actually have at least somewhat of a storyline. I've heard that there are bosses that'll be really strong, and'll require multiple people ganging up on it to beat. When something big like that goes down, I'm looking forward to being right up in there, healing my buddies and busting it up with my knife, staff, bow, or whatever weapon I happen to be using at the time. :)

It's not going to be like the other games, in fact I have a feeling that it may be totally different. I mean, it's an online game, you'll have the chance to interact with other people playing the game at the same time as you, which will be a very new addition to the series.

FFXI is going to be great, especially when all the bugs are worked out.

It's still some way off in the USA...but I'm planning on making an official Otaku clan for the game. I'll probably end up buying it on PC, so I won't have to wait for the PS2 version (the PC version will launch here at around the same time as the US PC version).

I too will be planning to get it for the PC just because I heard that the software installation is daunting for the PS2 and I don't want to disrupt my home network just to play XI, unless the PS2 supports a wireless network adaptor ;). It really will be set apart from the other games so far...but, as previously mentioned, it does have a storyline and ending. Then XII will pick up on the single-player experience again. lol, I really like the idea of having an Otaku clan for an MMORPG...

From what I've heard, you can play FFXI decently with a 56K connection. Of course it's going to be a lot better with a cable modem or DSL or some type of broadband, but it's not actually required. It'll probably just run a bit slow sometimes.

As far as concerns go...well, I can understand the concern with lack of story, etc...

However, there are a few things to note.

First, you can play this game by yourself. There are many NPCs (non-player characters) in this game...and when you talk to them, they will often give you certain quests to undertake. That alone will keep you going for months, simply because Square can always add/change these quests as time goes on. In some ways, the game is a constantly evolving universe.

Second, I think the multiplayer aspect will really ADD to the game, rather than hindering it.

Mainly because, we're not just talking about constant fights. We're talking about cooperative play. You can get a mission from a villager...and you and a few friends can go and take that quest. You can use your own strategies...and eventually fight the boss together.

So, I think Square have tied it all together pretty well in that sense.

Plus, Final Fantasy XII will NOT be primarily online. So even if you totally pass on FFXI, you can still enjoy XII without going online.

So, possibly, my understanding is that SquareSoft may not make another FF online game for a long while, since, like James said, SS could alter the game as time goes on. Doesn't mean they won't make a new online one, just not for a while.

My only concern is a time factor. More and more, my free time to be online is shrinking. And during the few times that I was involved in an online game, I always seemed to be missing during crucial parts. Meanwhile, others would be getting an advantage proportional (ugh, sp?) to their playing time. (But I assume that is leveled out somehow in the game...right?)

Anyways, I'm normally a loner as far as gaming goes...but if I had the time, I would love to be part of FFXI. I'm enjoying the idea already.
Well, if I had the time.
Pffft. :bluesweat

Ginny, I think that if FFXI ends up being profitable for Square...we'll be seeing more and more of these online games being released.

Having said that, the potential for FFXI to be a long lasting game is very high. Not only can Square change the various settings and missions...but they can also add new items, weapons and even enemies. Really, the possibilities are limitless.

I don't know if the game runs in real time or what (in terms of seasons or day/night patterns), but it's definitely an ongoing persistent world. It seems as though you won't need an hour of play each time to get something out of it. Half an hour here or there would probably be suitable as well.

*hopes desperately that James is right*

Ah well, then I'd have to start worrying about the modem bit--this computer I'm on is way too ancient to support 2 second flash thingies, let alone an entire world...*needs new computer badly...or at least a new "tower"*

And I assume the entire thing's customizeable (is that a word?). But the possibility of people hacking or using codes is a scary thought. I've seen my younger bro pull off stuff like that all the time on his Command&Conquer, Unreal, Warcraft, etc. games. Can SS protect against that, I hope? And what about leveling up? Or--
*is stifled before she can rattle off any more questions*

Mmm, I'll go over there now and wait for Kingdom Hearts...

You bring up a good point, Ginny.

Cheating is always a problem with online games. However, as soon as you boot the game up...Square automatically sends a list of file updates to your PS2 HDD (hard disk drive).

When cheating is discovered (or there is a bug...breach of rules etc), Square automatically updates the servers to cope with it.

So, with any luck...Square will constantly watch over the game world and ensure that everything runs correctly. Cheaters will simply have their cheating abilities blocked with a constant stream of server updates/changes.

Would they ever need to make another Final Fantasy game? I mean, they could just keep adding on more stories to Final Fantasy XI (which they most likely will). So it would be almost like another game, what does anyone else think?

Yeah, they could and most likely will do that, like you said, but they'll also be making other offline FF games, so people that aren't really into the online MMORPGs or don't want to pay can continue to enjoy the series. Besides FFXI, I'm really looking forward to the new GBA FF game, and whatever they do on the GCN. I want them to continue making normal, offline RPGs, but at the same time keep adding to FFXI.

There is only so much adding on to an old game can do. I'm sure there could be expansion packs for FFXI, but I am sure Square would charge extra and wouldn't include any huge gameplay update in something they'd give you with the standard fee.

I'd get tired of the game... I'd hope they would fall back on this game for years and years.

They'd still keep making single player FF games either way though, which is how this series should be anyway if you ask me.

Yeah, I agree that they could carry on making offline FF games, but wouldn't it save Square a lot of time and money just to keep updating the old FFXI? It wouldn't appeal to most fans, but doesn't it save us money too?
