Problem......... Square would lose out on ALOT of profit. Of course online payments, but more games and funding would not be possible in the future, thus after a serious amount of time. Square would be bakrupt. Besides I'd just get bored with FFXI, because as with all games, errors occur, I'm really looking forward to FFXI, but I hope more classics are released.

Not to mention FF3 that's even better than 7. Anyways, here's my opinion. I think Square making this Final Fantasy online is going to displease many fans of Final Fantasy. I'm one of them. So I won't be seen playing this game. If you ask me, and RPG should be solo, although MMORPGs are quite fun, I don't think Final Fantasy should be one. I've always been an old school gamer and I will always be an old school gamer.

The thing about FF Online is that, to me, it more or less comes off as any other MMORPG except the FF name is tacked onto it to help ensure sales.

The game isn't exactly selling well in Japan (which is most likely because you NEED that expensive HD to play it, which will likely hurt sales here as well). People will tire of playing the same damn game over and over and over.

There is way more money to be had in releasing full fledged sequels, or at least addon packs, instead of just updating an existing game. Money is all it really comes down to.

Companies cannot rely on online functions as a crutch so they never have to make another actual game again, which is what you are basically suggesting from what I understand :).

OK, being stupid over here (naw, not really, just woke up), but is FFx1 supposed to be completely online, or is part of it playable offline?
FFXI is online-only, so no, you can't play it offline. I do think it would have been cool to have an offline mode, though, where there just aren't any other human players. Or make a split screen multi-player mode, like Phantasy Star Online Ep. 1 & 2 is going to have.

And yeah, he's definitely missing out if he doesn't have FFVII. It ties with FFIV as my second favorite FF game. (FFVI taking the number 1 spot).

I've been doing some digging around, I have found the storyline:

There are three warring Kingdoms: San Doria, Windur, and Bastok, as you complete missions for a kingdom, the one you worked for gets stronger while the opposer kingdom loses power, the whole game pretty much works like that... For a little more info about the game, click here: http://cloudstrife9999.tripod.com/ffxi I made a few good links there as well.

Sounds interesting. Really, it does.
But I'm guessing there's also going to be a monthly fee attached to playing FFXi (my bro and I were discussing several MMORPGs last night). If so, I'm automatically out.

Could someone tell me the Japanese/English relation of the FFs?
I know 7 and up are still the same, but I'm getting 3, 4, and 6 mixed up.
One of them, FF3 I think, was with Terra and the Espers. It was a rom I got off the net, but when my first computer died, it went with it. Is that FF3?
The other below 7 one I've played was the one that came with CT in FFChronicles...labled as iV I think...*checks*...yup, iV.
I keep hearing that VI is great, but with all the number changes, I dunno what to look for it as (does that make sense?). Has it been released in the US?

Yes, FFXI will most likely have a monthly fee. It does in Japan, so I'm assuming it will elsewhere, also.

And for the numbering, in short, FFII is FFIV and FFIII is FFVI... But, here's a more detailed explanation:

Final Fantasy: The original Final Fantasy was released in the US on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), and in Japan on the FamiCom (the Japanese NES).

Final Fantasy II: Not released outside of Japan.

Final Fantasy III: Not released outside of Japan.

Final Fantasy IV: This game was released on the Super NES in 1991, under the name FFII. The reason its name was changed from FFIV to FFII is because it was only the second FF game released in the US. Later, this game was re-released with a new translation as part of FF Chronicles on the PSX, once again named FFIV. It was coupled with Chrono Trigger, another good RPG, but not a FF game.

Final Fantasy V: This game was not released on the Super NES. However, it did appear as part of FF Anthology, on the PSX. FF Anthology also included FFVI.

Final Fantasy VI: This game was released on the Super NES in 1996, under the name FFIII. Like FFIV before it, it was renamed because it was only the third FF game to be released in the US. Later, this game was re-released in FF Anthology on the PSX, once again named FFVI. FF Anthology also included FFV.

Final Fantasy VII: This game was released on the PlayStation and PC, in the US. Square just decided to drop the whole number switching for this and the rest of the FF games, so now the US gets the FF games titled with their real numbers.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Anyway, back to FFXI... I've recently heard a rumor (it's just a rumor, nothing official has been said) that said Square may not release FFXI in the US. The reasons would be that Square wouldn't be able to handle maintaining networks in both Japan and the US. I really hope this isn't true, because I've been looking forward to FFXI since I first saw a trailer for it at E3 one year. (I forget what year it was).
*mumble mumble* Was only one post, and besides, there was some stuff about FFXI at the top... But if you insist, I'll add some more FFXI related stuff to it... *mumble mumble* - Desbreko
That's freaky, coz I have FF Anthology, and I got FF5 and 4 on it.
That would be the UK version of FF Anthology, then. My list refers to the US releases of the games. In the UK, FFVI was released by itself, and then FFIV and FFV were released as FF Anthology.
There, are you happy, Weh? I just edited the post to answer the question instead of make a new post. :p ...Though yeah, we should try to keep this on the subject of FFXI. - Desbreko
Yep, well...as I say, the PC release is still some time off (next year sometime).
But when it's available, it'd be very cool to set up an official OtakuBoards clan. ;)
In FFXI, you can have a battle party of something like 6-8 people. And you can join two parties together...and have something like 16 people.
I'm not sure of the exact numbers, but I do remember that you can have very large fighting parties.
Imagine all of us fighting one huge boss! *drool* :drool:
Hmm I wonder if you can cause damage to other people? That'd be quite mad, but I doubt you could. We'd have to have every member who doesnt cause trouble on these boards and then form an alliance dividing into groups while we'd trade and help out other alliances. Thats the only way I think it'd work.
Nope, you can't hurt other players. Square wanted it to be a friendly RPG, where the players go out and kill monsters instead of each other. Personally, I want it that way, because it'd really piss me off if I just started out and then got trashed by some high level idiot for no reason. The only way I'd want player vs. player fights would be in a battle arena sort of thing where you don't die in the actual game, kind of like the battle arena thing in FFVII.
Yep, I agree with that. Fighting player vs player would only be suitable in a more controlled environment. There's nothing worse than being new...and being slaughtered by some guy who's been playing for hours and hours each day.
Heh, it's gonna be Phantasy Star Online for me all over again, lol
Only thing about PSO was you could only have 4 people at a time during missions
I will definately get the PC version of FFXI since setting it up for PS2 is too expensive
One thing I would like to know however is whether or not you will still need to have a monthly subscription to play the game as with the PS2 version, like Everquest, for example
