No-Name
Don't you just hate it when you see an American live-action show made taking elements from great animes? For example, I'm sitting at home enjoying some rerun Simpsons episodes. A trailer for Fox's new show Firefly runs at the commecrials. "....A space cowboy.....and a girl in a box" are the 8 words (in 2 seperate parts) that pop out at me. Ok Space Cowboy is pretty general, as it debuted in 1998 (around Bebop's release actually) in an *Nsync song, so we can't blame Fox for ripping CB off (btw I know the Cowboy thing cuz I saw a Gundam Wing music video with the music, I hate nsync). But the girl in the box is straight outta Outlaw Star. Even the fact that shes naked, and curled up in the fetal position are stolen. And I'm sure critics will call this "A great spin on what we're used to seeing on cable television and in science fiction." Give me a break, it was cool when Outlaw Star did it but that doesn't mean you have to take it and put it in your show.
Semjaza
Space cowboy? Haven't you ever heard that old song from the 70s? Some people call me a space cowboy, some call me a gangster of love, some call me Maurice... woohoo I'm sure there are 20 other anime shows that did things Outlaw Star did as well, but who knows :). I'm sure some of the show could be inspired by certain anime and other shows, but really who knows. I've seen countless sci-fi movies where someone is naked in a fetal posistion at some point. I don't know enough of the show to say either way... and no one really knows jack about Firefly yet. I bet anything that nude scene is just to get people interested in the show and is actually of little importance. I'm sure most people notice how the commercial refers to a "space hooker" as well. Lady Macaiodh
plus, you have to take into account that this happens all the time. "there's nothing new under the sun." pretty much everything's been done before. hopefully, old ideas are expanded upon, rather than just copied.
Guest Hikaru Ichijyo
:drunk: Well its sad but unfortunately every idea or storyline has been done before. Nothing is original anymore, though this isn't the first time an anime theme has coincided with a live action show. There are plenty of things like Night Rider being an idea stolen out of that M.A.S.K. show and also the Los Luchadores show being a rippoff of that anime called Muscle Man Kannukum I believe. Anyway this nerd is ranting to much -_- and sadly when you've seen tons of anime shows and movies like myself. You begin to analyze and find certain similar themes present in American tv. :freak:
SS Vegeta
Everyone is basically saying "Everything has been done before, it is definetley going to be re-done" and that does have a truth to it. But I mean, a naked chick in a box. Come on! God, I mean that is a straight rip. When I dig through some junk and find my first Outlaw Star dvd, I am going to watch that episode and check what her position is. I am thinking it might even be the same position. :p
No-Name
^^^thank you. At least someone agrees with me. I agrred that Space Cowboy has been used many times before. But let's review this: -Sci Fi Action Flick -Overlarge Suitcase -When opened a bunch of smoke comes out (exactly like OS) -They find a naked girl, curled in the fetal position facing the exact same way she did in Outlaw Star. It would be one thing if she was in a tube or something or they did something half original, but there is no way you can look at both scenes and say one didnt spin off the other. Omar Harris
So she's naked in a box. There is a difference between a "space hooker" and a living computer key. And it's probably just one scene anyway. But to call it a ripoff? HA!
Domon
I wholeheartdly agree, i mean come on! Why make a crappy knock off/ spin off/ rip off of two great anime?! Just so Scince Fiction people will like it?! That is so wrong and at the same time disturbing!!! *Shudders* I haven't seen it but i've heard some bad things even about gundam!!! The new movie G-Savior!! I think the movie looks good but i heard there isn't as much mobile suit action as people wanted!! I heard it was too much of a romance story. Oh well but still i agree FireFly is a rip off of Outlaw Star and Cowboy Beebop! I'm surprised that Sunrise hasn't sued fox yet for stealing some of thier creations. Omar Harris
Has anyone really seen "Firefly" yet? It's not a rip-off until you see it you know. Every Pokemaniac and their grandma thought digimon would be a rip-off of their show and look at it. It has nothing to do with anything Pokemon has and is a completely different show altogether. So my suggestion: THey have a few similarities from the few previews. Watch one episode of teh show, then come back and tell us if it is a rip-off. Semjaza
Exactly, they are just showing random things that might get people interested. Apparently naked girls, space hookers and so on get people to watch shows... who would have guessed? There have been like a thousand sci-fi movies with people in some sort of capsule/whatever that are basically frozen, or whatever you want to call it, like in that commercial. I get what your point is, and it is similiar... but then again OS has things similar to other things as well. Imitation is sometimes considered a form of flattery afterall lol.
I've always hated that quote lol. People steal stuff from me, call it their own, and get praise. Grrr. I think it should be "imitation is knowing a good thing and taking it for yourself"
Domon
No-Name don't worry, i'm sure Sunrise will catch on soon and then Fox will get in serious trouble. I mean Fox is quite known for their action shows but they just can't hack it when it comes to regular t.v.shows so then they steal ideas and tweak them enough so that they don't get into trouble. Thats all i can say for now cause the bell just rang.
Jeebs
I thought that it was an OS rip-off when I first saw the commercial, too. I didn't even really think of CB until you mentioned it, though I watch it more than Outlaw Star.
Domon
Well what i don't get is why did Fox decide to make action show of those two shows combined? Isn't it a little wierd??? I mean that must just go to show you that fox has comepletly run out of ideas so then they decide to rip off the animetion industry!! I mean come on!! First they come out with American Idol *shudders* and now this?! Come on give it a rest people! Do not rip off two great anime shows. Who here agrees with me that American Idol was just so wrong?? I thought it was just a big dud, i mean i'm so sick of hearing about those stupid pretty boys and all of that crap. But yeah where was i?? lol Sorry about that i have a tendency to go on power trips. Omar Harris
American Idol was orignally a British TV show. And Fox has not ripped off anything. Firefly was created by Joss Whedon, the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. Lets me ask you this: How many on this board have actually sat down to watch Firefly? ~*!Rei Hino!*~
This kind of thing, isn't a ripoff. The same storylines and words are used all the time.
Mitch
This should be in the Music and TV section so I will move it there.
