amiboshi
Originally posted by Aries My situation, since I'm in a small school, is that everyone has probably noticed me, but not everyone knows me. I've talked to most people in the school, but barely anyone besides close friends from a few years ago even know my name (even though I know most people's names). So, my point is, I'm not popular, but I'm not an outcast (although, I'd rather be an outcast than be popular). On the internet. . .I have a few good friends, but I really don't know what people truly think of me, and I really don't care (for the most part).
lol. Aries, I must comment on your post. I think on the net, at least here at OB, you're extremely popular. Have you....seen how many people have you on their friends list? lol. And if you mention "Aries" everyone knows who you're talking about. You're like....infamous. O.o
Kinetic
Lol, the only reason a few people know me are because of RPGs I've been in and those banners I made :p I wouldn't say I'm actually 'popular' or 'infamous' though, lol. I wouldn't think anything near that :p
Mitch
I'm of course not popular at my school, of course not. I have a few friends here and there. And if I could have popularity, I still wouldn't welcome it. As for what I think of you, Cera, I think you seem to be intelligent, at least in some aspects, if not many. I don't know you well enough to really catagorize you, but I can tell you are probably a very well thought out person. You seem to be nice, but I don't really have a developed opinion of you yet, first I need to speak to you for awhile and see what you're all about. You seem nice though...yeah...but I could be wrong...:p

Guest Hikaru Ichijyo
 O_o well I personally didn't think there was such a thing as Internet Popularity? As a dear friend of mine told me once labeling is wrong and popularity is a label. Though I don't believe in it, apparently during high school I was very popular thanks to my down to earth personality and wacky anime habits. As far as the net goes I'm not really sure if I am this "popular" as people call it so I wouldn't be able to answer it. Am I even? :therock: Certainly beats me *shrugs*
User Name
EXACTLY third most popular person in the year? How the hell did you work that out? Anywhoo . . . I'm popular in the sence of that I can drift from social group to group happily and be welcome anywhere. I have nothing against the footballer / cheerleader social rank, cause I get on well with them, same with the other end of the chain - goths and heavy metalers. I'm well aware of the boundries that exist and that it's near impossiable to mix these groups, so I don't try. But for whatever reason (i'm soooo great, i guess), I'm an exception to the above rule. I have aboot four close friends that know me almost as they know themselves and vise versa. And when it all boils down to it, I'd put everyone else in the entire world after any one of them. To me, they're what matters, henceforth, to me they're what's popular. But that's in real life world. Online is a majorly different story. It's so hard to have a proper conversation using a keyboard and a monitor, that I always refrain from doing so. These days more so than ever, nothing intresets me online, that's worth my opinion anyway. Give this and the fact that you can write for pages and pages and still never get your full opinion across. Because of this, nobody here knows me. And everybody who's in their elitest community who have been her for a long time won't recognise my screen name, see I've got hardly any posts and skip right over my post looking for somone they know and get on with. So really, you're all giving out aboot how you all "hate" "popularity" and how "popular" people react to you, when right here, right now, if you don't have to, you won't read this post, which in my opinion is the biggest hypocracy of all. (<AA>)
I'm in a small school, and I know all the popular people but I myself am not very popular... and I don't really care for popularity. And its not like I go beg the popular people to be my friends, its by chance I made all my friends... Well, thats cuz I'm so shy, well I'm shy around new people at least. Edit: And IRL I don't rant that much, and I usually make some sense...

I might see someone I know and just say "hi, how you doing? etc." or ask me for advice and I go back either doing nothing (listening to music in the meantime) or continue any work I'm doing. It does affect you in a way and over a long time it lead me to a nervous break down. I don't consider myself famous at all and I kinda like it that way both Online and Off. James
I'm a lot like that with my school friends. If one of my friends was ever having problems...everyone else would be interjecting with advice. And I would rarely say a word. But then that person would actually seek me out for my opinion...and not do that with the others. So I don't know exactly what they thought of me or how much they valued my opinion. I guess that because I wasn't offering it every five seconds, maybe it became more valuable.
Desbreko
Me? Popular? HA! ...Okay, had to let that out, heh. I'm not really sure if I'm popular or not. Probably not, since I have a small group of friends and I barely ever talk to anyone but them. It's not really that I'm shy, it's that I just don't really like many people. To tell the truth, I find a lot of people to be quite annoying. So, yeah, I might be considered to be an outcast, but it'd be because I choose to be one. Online, people aren't as annoying because, well, you can just ignore what they write. In real life, it's hard to ignore someone that's talking to you because they're right there, well, talking to you. Online, you can just skip over someones post and that's that. I really have no idea whether I'm popular on the internet or not. I have a few people that I talk to regularly, besides posting here on OB, but other than that, I really haven't gotten to know anyone that well. The main reason I come here is to talk about gaming, which is why I usually stick to the series and gaming forums. Heck, the only reason I'm writing this is because I'm up late and bored, so I thought I'd take a look in the Otaku Lounge forum. So, yeah, call me popular, call me an outcast, call me weird, call me a freak, whatever... I've actually come to take those last two (and others) as compliments, because it usually means people consider me to be different from "normal" people. And I like that. I like being different, and I don't want to be like other people. I wear the clothes I like, I listen to the music I like, I play the games I like, and I act the way I like. I try my best not to offend anyone, and I'm actually one of the nicest people I know, I just don't care what other people think of me. They can think what they like, but anyone that truly gets to know me will realise that I'm actually quite nice and friendly. Of course, there aren't many people that get to know me, because I tend to avoid most people... I guess you could say I pick my friends carefully. So, whatever... Think what you like of me, call me what you like, I don't care. Nobody is going to change who I am, no matter what they think, say, or do, so why should I care? It seems like most of the time, what people call "popular" is really just going with what the majority of people think is "cool," which makes the majority of people like you. I find that rather stupid. I, myself, am not going to conform to the "latest fashion" or whatever else is supposed to be "cool" at the time, just so some people will like me for a while. I'd rather be myself and only have a few "outcasts" as friends that are of the same mind as I am.
Kei
Popularity...... Bah. Popularity has been put on way too high a perch in school. People just snub you because you're not part of the "in-crowd" when they don't know the first thing about you. Popularity can go to Hell for all I care. If you don't like me for who I am, that's on you. I'm pretty much a loner myself, but I do have a group of friends I hang out with from time to time. I'm pretty much the same online. Not liked by anyone, but not too hated either.

Angelus_Necare
Popularity isn't a big thing where I'm from. Popularity is defined moreso with the trendy/jock category. I don't consider myself popular, just a face in the crowd. I have my small band of friends and that's all I need. Online I find myself to be more obnoxious and cynical, so either people like me or they don't.

Lady Macaiodh
i cannot even really explain how this thread has made me feel. i've never really understood the concept of "populartiy". the idea that someone bases their whole existance on what other people think about them in high school.... it's pretty mystifying. guess what. it's not going to matter for very long. lol that's why OB is cool. we don't judge each other on appearances here. btw, cera, you rule. yeah, i know, that doesn't even describe it. i'm just feeling particularly.... dead... tonight. Mnemolth
Popularity is associated with being shallow. So you're not going to find many people admit to it or to want it. And that's a shame. Cos what I find really shallow is pretense. Human beings are social animals. We live in groups, and it is important for us to be accepted. To think popularity is unimportant is a mistake. To believe one does not need or care about popularity is to further compound that mistake. No man (or woman) is an island. And if you are going to be an island, let me say that chances are you won't end up as a tropical paradise but more of a bitter barren wasteland. Of course I'm not saying popularity is the be-all-or-end-all of everything. Sometimes the price for popularity is too high, and for your integrity, your sense of self-worth and identity, its better not to pay that price. All I'm saying is that popularity is important, and that most of us desire it in one form or another. And it would be foolish to deny that of ourselves. Mr. Maul
I love the internet. My social life on the internet far exceeds my real life by about 99% I don't care what other people think. My friends are Magic playin'-gothic-paranormal believin'-RPGing-freaks; just like me. Most people believe that the words geek, dork, and nerd all have the same definition. Not true. Geek- One who lives on the computer. Nerd- One who role plays, or plays card games(magic,yu-gi-oh,etc) Dork-The layman's definition for all three words, the classic dork-Steve Urkle. Everyone's popular in their own group.

In terms of computers (since it's a subject most are familiar with) a geek is one who works mostly with the internet, knows how to work it, how to manipulate it, etc. A nerd knows more about the computer itself rather than the internet. Of course the definition of both do not rely on technical knowledge. Nor are they neccessarily insulting.
