I was thinking about Goku, Gohan, Goten, and Vegeta. One thing that was bothering was what ever happen to there tails?

I know that Goku's was removed but Gohan's was pulled off by Piccolo and Vegeta's was cut by Yarirobi(sp?) and Goten's was..was..well I've never seen Goten's tail.

So which comes to my question, What ever happen to there tails?

This question has been raised many times before and the general concensous(sp?) is that he was born without a tail. So was Chibi Trunks, so don't go asking that question next.

But that's what I don't get...if Gohan and Goten both have the same amount of Saiyan blood, how come Gohan has a tail and Goten doesn't?

Maybe Goten and Trunks got their tails cut off when they were born...eh, I don't know
Kinda like genetics...

Like for example... You are an offspring of your mother and father. You would have the same amount of flesh and blood from both your mother and father as would your brother or sister. Does that mean you'll both have blue eyes? Blond hair? Look anything like each other? Of course not. Just because Goten has Saiya-jin blood in him, doesn't mean he's going to have a tail. He's still half human. Humans don't have tails, meaning there's a 50/50 chance he is going to be born with or without a tail. Same reason Goten doesn't have the same hair as Gohan...

"ABOUT SAIYAN TAILS

Throughout series

This one has been a big subject lately at www.otakuboards.com so I decided that makes it a little worthy. Here's info about the tails...

GOKU'S TAIL--Originally, Kame pulled his tail out towards the end of DRAGON BALL. However, one of the Kai's returned it while Goku was in Other World so he could acheive SS L4.

VEGETA'S TAIL--Was cut off by Yajirobi at the end of the Saiyan Saga. However, even though it was not pulled out by the roots, it never grew back naturally. He had Bulma help him using an invention to grow it back.

GOHAN'S TAIL--Was never actually permanently removed...I think. It was cut off twice, however, during the Saiyan Saga (Gohan transformed twice while training with Piccolo) and once during the movie Tree of Might.

GOTEN AND TRUNK'S LACK OF A TAIL--This one has been a HUGE topic of debate. While Gohan was a Human-Saiyan hybrid, he did have a tail. However, even though Trunks and Goten are of the same geneology, they never have tails in the series! A little speculation...

1) They never had tails. They just inherited a different gene than Gohan did.

2) They have tails, but they were removed. This brings up one other point, though. If that is true, who removed Goten's? Vegeta, knowing the danger Trunks would pose to his family, would probably have removed it at birth. However the only person still alive to know about tails was Gohan, but he never remembers what happens when he transforms! Here are a few theories on Gotens.

a) Goten was never born with a tail to begin with. It is possible for one to have a tail and one not have a tail.

b) Piccolo, Vegeta, Krillin, etc. came by and noticed the tail and removed it.

c) Gohan remembered having his cut off and couldn't remember why, but decided to have it removed just to be safe.

d) It was removed during one of the trips to Bulma's house (Goten mentions these trips in the episode The Newest Super Saiyan)"

Okay, okay, lots of speculation, I know...
There's more at my site, but you can go there if you want it...this post is already long enough and probably has too many errors to count...

Thank you, TN, now I'm enlightened:). Seriously though, that is the most logical reason...so I'll believe it.

It's not just Goten and Trunks who don't have tails though...Bra and Pan don't either.
But then Pan is three-quarters human, so she was probably not born with a tail...and Bra seems to be more like her mum...so she probably didn't have a tail either.

Ok. I'm not confused anymore

Going on the assumption that it has to do with genetics leads to an interesting conclusion...

If it was because of genetics, the gene for a tail would have to be dominant; Gohan would have one gene for a tail (from Goku) and one not (from Chichi). Since he does have a tail, the tail gene is dominant and the other recessive.

Therefore anyone born with one or two tail genes would have a tail. So Goten would have to have two non-tail genes, one recieved from each parent. This would mean Goku had passed one recessive gene on to him and one dominant gene to Gohan.

This, however, means that full blooded Saiya-jins can carry the recessive non-tail gene; therefore, some Saiya-jins would naturally be born tailless, even if both parents had tails.

Did that make any sense? Sorry, I'm taking AP Biology ^_^'

No where does it state that the tail is a dominant or recessive gene. And even so, just because their first child had a tail doesn't mean it's a dominant gene. My neice was born with blue eyes. Blue eyes is a recessive gene. Her father, my brother has brown eyes (dominant) and her mother has brown eyes. My neice got the recessive gene my brother carried from my mother. The tail could be a recessive gene. It could not be. Either way, I think the reason why Goten and Trunks don't have tails is because of genes.

It has to be dominant. If it was recessive, two genes would be necessary for the trait to appear, right? Like your neice, who has one blue eye gene from her father and one from her mother. That means, if the trait is recessive, that Gohan has two tail genes, one from his father and one from his mother . But how can he get a tail gene from Chichi?! Unless I missed something and she's part Saiya-jin...

well... techically, you're both right... while "having a tail" is probably dominant... it takes more than just 2 gene codes for just one trait... what i mean is... there could be a variety of traits that lead to having a tail not just Dominant and Recessive because you could have short/long, thick/thin... etc.
but now that i think of it... it's probably just that the animator didnt feel like drawing in a tail when he came up with the characters...
