Amphion
Is there anyone here who is a firm believer in honor? If you dont mind and would like to respond to the post, reply and answer these questions. 1. What is honor? 2. How strongly do you beleive in honor? 3. Would you rather die in honor, or live with out it? Most people associate honor only with War and battle, but thats by far not the only application of honor. I was just interested in your thoughts on the subject.
Sere Tuscumbia
1. What is honor? Well, ok. Honor-n. 1. good name or public esteem. 2. an evidence or symbol of distinction. 3. a gesture of deference. 4. chastity, purity. So on and so forth. Honor's a lot of things. 2. How strongly do you beleive in honor? Can't say. Haven't done very many good things in my life . . . if that is what honor is. 3. Would you rather die in honor, or live with out it? Die in honor. Pull a leaf from Bonzo's book and don't let anyone give you crap. You gonna fight, you gonna fight alone, and you gonna fight fair. Honor's the best way to go. PiroMunkie
I kind of am, to an extent... 1. What is honor? This dictionary defines honor as glory; fame; renown. I personally disagree with that. At least in terms of today's day and age. Celebrities are glorified, famous, and renown; we all know that doesn't make them honorable. In my opinion, honor is rather found in humility. Pretty much the exact opposite of the definition above. It is not standing on the sidelines as the weak are picked on, but when you succeed in defeating (in whatever way this may be) the tyrant. You don't absorb what praise might be given to. You give and don't expect to be given. It is being fair and just. Looking upon another as an equal. Treating others with admiration and respect (especially to women, that's chivalry kicking in), unless good reason not to. 2. How strongly do you beleive in honor? Pretty strongly, though I am also a pretty firm believer in the idea of An eye for eye. If someone offends me, then they will lose my sight of honor within them, and thus my reason of retaliation. If physical combat ensues, I merely fight in self-defense and not to harm or bring down the other person. 3. Would you rather die in honor, or live with out it? I'd rather die knowing I played things fair, than live forever knowing I cheated somewhere.
Turkey
1. What is honor? I believe honor is a representation of your honesty, loyalty, selflessness, and other similar qualities that define a person's positive side. 2. How strongly do you believe in honor? Very much. I try to be a person of honor at everything I do, but sometimes I may fail... 3. Would you rather die in honor, or live with out it? I'd die for someone else without thinking twice (unless it was a person I hated).
Kent
honor... hmmm. thats a really good question. what is it? i dont know. how strongly do i believe in it? not really sure about that one. die with or live with out? live with out. life is a gift. honor is earned. once it is lost, it can be regained. i once got into a fight. the fight didnt go my way. it could have easily gone my way, but one thing got in my way, honor, fighting fair is just a good way to loose. from that day forth i learned, there is no such thing as honor in a fight. and even if there is, whats the point in having something when it leads you to a horrid end. as for the rest of life. honor is very important. i try to live with it. amibasuki
1. What is honor? the definition I found to be the closest to how I define it is 'principled uprightness of character; personal integrity.' 2. How strongly do you believe in honor? strongly. nobody's perfect, but I do my best to live it. 3. Would you rather die in honor, or live with out it? die in honor.
Amphion
Reason I asked, after a recent discussion with classmates, no one had a clue towards what honor was. I would rather loose then do something cowardly or unhobnorable just to win. But thats me. I am the old fashioned type and I believe strongly in honor. I am more the type that if my opponent was to loose his weapon, I would wait for him to aquire another or I would throw mine down. Anyone with a waepon has an huge advantage over an oponent, so beating him proves nothing. But I do not mean this in a literal sense alone. I apply such to everyday life. Im not saying its wrong to not believe in honor or such, I just think its a good quality to have.
Sara
I can't remember the wording, exactly, and I don't have my copy of the book at hand...but someone in Ender's Game had a good quote. He told Ender he was glad that his team had lost; if he'd actually have beaten Ender, he;'s have wanted it to be done fair. Ender told him that he should use any advantage he had, fair or not. "Oh, I did. I'm only fair-minded after the battle." Something to that effect.
