Liam sighed and rolled over onto his back, dropping his weapons. Granting himself some reprieve in the form of a wheeze, he leapt up to a standing position. Liam glanced around at Nicholas?s guards, all were slotting in new cartridges for their rifles.

?Well,? he said as he raised the MS1, ?she may have made a promise, but I sure as hell didn?t.?

Liam held the trigger and gave one fell swipe in the direction of the hapless mercenaries. All fifty rounds exited at the speed of five hundred rounds per second. The cartridge of the MS1 ejected and clattered on the ground, a faint wisp of smoke in the air. Liam may have received great satisfaction from seeing the mercenaries fall while holding bleeding parts of their bodies, but he didn?t show it.
He slotted a new cartridge in the MS1, his lip curled slightly in amusement at the sight of fifty odd bullets embedded in the round concrete walls.

Rae slipped a deceased guard off her shoulder.

?Some warning would have been nice,? she muttered. The guard had taken a bullet to the head while still holding Rae firmly by the arm.
Nicholas glanced at Rae, eyes wide.

?Jenna,? he muttered, ?¿Qué ha hecho usted? ¡Usted ha abandonado su hermano y a su padre!?*

Rae shrugged, ?Tengo no padre ni a hermano, el SYF me libertó. ¡Lo que es más importante, Ryan me libertó!? A manic glint was in her eye as she said this, Nicholas hung his head low.

Rae spoke with a flawless Spanish accent. Liam raised an eyebrow at the conversation. Nicholas was starting to doubt whether Rae was his sister Jenna, or not. Good thing Rae had learnt Spanish well?

* ?What have you done? You have abandoned your brother and your father!?
* ?I have no father or brother, the SYF freed me. More importantly, Ryan freed me.?

OOC: Nicholas. I must remember his name is [strike]Nocholas[/strike] Nicholas.

___
IN: Seconds later another team of agents - this time the elder SAS agents - burst in, one of them shouting, "All right, Baudez, we've got you..." He trailed down at Siren's snort and Liam's guffaw. "What the? You kids stopped them?" His increduality was obvious.

"Eh," Liam shrugged. "It wasn't that hard."

The agents ushered Nicholas out of the room under high security. "I think," Rae voiced, "that I'm going to go check on Pizaro."

Liam nodded. "Be careful." They started to leave, but Liam stopped her. "How do you know Spanish."

"Family thing. Adam's fluent in it too."

Liam nodded slowly. His head had started to hurt, badly, after his painful encounter with the brute Jeorge. He rubbed it and walked out of the room sluggishly, tripping over the corpses as he went. Ananda raised an eyebrow and gave a ?how often does that happen? look to the others. No response came so she shrugged and began chatting to Jaudiar, catching up somewhat on what she?d been up to these past years.

Liam climbed up the service ladder of the elevator shaft. Soon the basement level was merely a pinprick of light far below, at the bottom of the deep shaft. Liam continued onwards, vaguely aware of what was going on around him. He reached his respective level and climbed out through the open doors.

Without a word he unlocked his apartment door and flopped down on his bed. His head was pounding now, driving the anvil chorus deep into his mind. He exhaled and the ceiling swirled, re-arranging itself before his eyes.

A face formed, Pizaro?s, it mocked him, told him of his sister, told him how easily she cracked under Nicholas?s advances. Nicholas?s image appeared beside his fathers and dropped easily to the floor. He too, laughed at him. Liam?s mind burned, his anger flared and he leapt at the taunting images?Nicholas stepped nimbly aside. Every swing, kick and punch Liam threw, Nicholas was always one step ahead.

On the balcony, a Pigeon cocked its head at the odd human inside. The pigeon sidestepped to get a better look. This odd boy was taking wild, no, they seemed to be directed at something specific, albeit nonexistent. The pigeon ruffled it?s feathers, cooed and dropped off the balcony, soaring into the sky.

Liam wheezed, wiping the sweat off his brow. Nicholas walked forward, his father stood beside him. They both laughed at him.

Nicholas raised Liam?s chin,

?Dare to follow us boy?? His laughed chilled Liam?s bones, ?we know your ruse. We know that Jenna is merely the one you call ?Rae.? We know of her other name too?her real name.?

Liam threw his head forward in a way that would have dealt an unnerving blow. Nicholas vanished to the side. Liam fell forward with momentum, landing on his hands and knees. Pizaro and Nicholas laughed, opened his apartment door and closing it behind them.
Liam rose slowly from his knees. His fists were bleeding and all his joints were aching. He shuddered and held his head with one hand, as though trying to dull the fire that roared inside.

Liam shook his head and ripped the door open, charging outside. This time he wasn?t going to let Pizaro and Nicholas escape?this time lethal force was necessary. He unholstered his Desert Eagle and charged through the corridors, brushing aside people going about restoring the SYF to running standards.

Liam ran around another corner.

Pizaro was there, beckoning him forward. Liam let out a mangled cry of fury and leapt at him. This time he pinned him down and placed the gun firmly against his head.

?Where is he?? Liam shouted, his face was covered in sweat, eyes darting to and fro.

No response came from Pizaro.

Liam dug the gun in further.

?I?m not messing around Pizaro. I?m asking you now, where is he??
Still no response came.

Liam?s head throbbed, he winced and shook his head. The Pizaro grinned. The pin dropped in the Desert Eagle.

At the sound of the shot, the whole world leapt back into focus. Liam glanced down at the terrified janitor he had in his hands. There was a massive black burn and hole in the carpet, centimetres from the janitors head. Smoke rose from it and Liam?s gun.

Liam turned around, stunned. He was aware of the screaming now. The horrible, mind numbing screaming. Secretaries and officials stood stunned and what had happened. Liam dropped the pistol and clutched his head at the pain beyond pain. Bile rose in his throat and the room swam. Liam fell forward, unconscious.

?Do you have any idea how close we came to Liam killing everyone in the office??

The Commander shrank back slightly. He had sat under a furious tirade of insults and vehement threats from his superiors. Good thing they were in other states. A knock came at the door.
The Commander waved the timid doctor in.

?Yes, what is it??

The images of three official looking people hung in their video conference windows behind him, angry even more at this intrusion.
The doctor pulled out two full colour catscans.

?Well?uh?that is sir?we?ve found out what the matter is with Liam.?

?He?s unbalanced!? Shouted one of the officials on the video conference, ?we need him locked up now! Before there?s a fatality!?

The Commander closed the video conference.

?Well?? he said.

The doctor pulled up on the cat scans.

?See this image of the brain here?? he pointed it out to the Commander, ?that?s a normal functioning mind.?

?Yes, I see.? Said the Commander.

The doctor pulled up the other, it was alarmingly different, blood could be seen pooling around the back part of the brain.

?This one is Liam?s. As you can see, that fight with Nicholas?s man Jeorge caused an already unstable brain region, thanks to stress, to bleed. It caused extreme unbalance of his psychosis, and an extreme form of paranoia and schizophrenia. We?re going to have to release some of the fluid soon sir, or it will be permanent??

The Commander looked pensive.

?Fine?? he sighed, ?operate. I want the best on the case. Classify the wound as?uh?some form of car accident. Fabricate it to the press. You know, that sort of thing.?

The doctor nodded and backed out of the room.

Ananda was quiet. Very quiet. Jaudiar was silent, and the tears that smarted in her eyes were painful. Both Rae and Siren were standing with the sisters, eyes cold and faces etched with sorrow. Ananda looked into Jaudiar's eyes. Some form of a message passed between them, quickly and almost instantly. Ananda broke the connection and exited the room.

Once she was gone, Jaudiar wraped her arms around herself and closed her eyes. Then she opened them once more and the three women left the hospital. There was nothing they could do but wait. Once inside the apartment, Jaudiar locked the doors and fled to the kitchen. She opened the fridge and pulled out Sprite. Then she plopped down on the chair and chugged the whole lot down.

Rae: .....damnit.

Jaudiar: ....he'll live.

Siren: But will he be the same?

Jaudiar: I don't know anymore. There's alot he's got going against him. I can't do much about it. This whole SYF thing.....I'm starting to wonder what it's real purpose is.

Siren: Like Ender's Game?

Rae: ....don't even compare SYF to them.

Jaudiar: I'm taking it you read Ender's Game as well then?

Rae: ....aww fücking.....

The eldest of the three ran her fingers through her hair and sighed helplessly. What was the meaning of their existance? The SYF had changed Liam from the happy go lucky to the cold, insane.......completely out to lunch maniac killer.

The heart rate monitor let out another beep. The nurse took a glance at it. It was disturbingly slow. In the space between blips, all eyes were on it, fearing the worst. But then, miraculously, it blipped again and Liam?s heart pumped more blood around his system.

She passed another instrument to the surgeon beside her. The operation had been gruelling one. Some complications had arisen, but they had been fixed and as far as they could tell, all was in working order.

Three shifts of surgeons had been cycled through, as well as nurses and an anaesthetist.

The surgeon finished.

?He?s going to have a nasty scar there,? He muttered into the unnatural silence, ?but he?s going to live. It looks like we righted the problem without doing much damage?but I fear his short term memory is going to be shot for a couple of weeks, but that?s only if he?s lucky.?

The nurse nodded and moved him out of the operating theatre. Liam would be in the Intensive Care Unit for a month or two. He?d be conscious in a day or two, a couple of hours if he was really lucky?either way, they?d be monitoring his life signs until he was well enough to walk.

?Poor guy,? the nurse said the ICU nurse on duty, ?run over by a police car while trying to cross the street near that fire last night. Almost didn?t have a chance.?

Leaving the two girls, Rae ambled aimlessly towards the drink vending machine. She didn't have any money, but one of her old friends had shown her how to get drinks for free. One well placed kick later, and she had a bottle of apple juice. She turned to go back to the girls, then chnged her mind and left the building. She needed some fresh air.

Rae sat down, then stood up again, turned one way, then the other, and sat down once more. Had Ryan - or any other person able to read body language - been there, they'd have known her state of mind immediately. She was totally, and utterly, bewildered.

She'd known people to have surgery before. Some of her friends had. Even she had, to get her appendix out. But none of the operations had been dangerous, other than the basic risks that all operations had. She was scared something was going to happen.

"Hard, isn't it?"

"Yeah. It could be harder, I suppose."

Adam's accent thickened, and Rae listened to him, almost not registering the difference between Spanish and English. "What do you think of Pizaro?"

She took her lead from him, speaking so that passers by couldn't understand them. "I hate him for what he's done, but his family loyalty has to be admired. Had my family betrayed me, I wouldn't forgive them."

Adam didn't look at her. "What if it they'd done it for another family member?

Rae shrugged. "I could accept it in time. Do you think Liam's going to be all right?"

"Yes. Rae, do you know about the papers? You know a lot of things, but have you heard of the papaers about Liam?"

She nodded. "I found out one day when I was snooping. They basically say Liam has to obey orders."

"Or what?"

"Or lIam is going to be run over by a Landrover." She stodd up, walked away, then back to him, and continued pacing that invisible line. "I don't think we should discuss this. I need to...I need to..." She whirled around to face Adam. "Tell me about Matt's death."

He sighed. "I was beginning to hope you'd never ask about that."

She looked down at her jeans, then back up at Adam. "Well, I am."

"He dissappeared on a mission. In the end, we found some of his clothes - bloodstained - down a ravine. It was assumed that the wild dogs had taken his body."

She nodded, for some reason keeping back the overjoyed shout that said, "But he's alive!" Something wasn't right. For some reason, Matt hadn't let Adam know that he was alive. He hadn't let her know either, until he saw her. Rae decided she'd keep an eye on things. Just in case.

She smiled to herself. Even though she knew too much, the SYF didn't know any better...... She sighed with longing. Oh well, that's what she get for being brought up in the brothel of the Peach Orchard vow. She sighed once more and ducked the brush Siren threw at her.

Siren: Stop that!

Jaudiar: Sorry. I didn't notice.

The younger of the two looked at her patronizingly and smiled. Then she waxed professional and quoted.

Siren: The sigh's often go unnoticed by the sigher.

Jaudiar: I'm gonna go check on Liam.

She stood up and walked out of their apartment livingroom [LIVING ROOM! YES WE HAVE OUR OWN ROOMS!]

Liam's heart rate was steady, vital signs at normal. Jaudiar smiled and watched him breathe.

Liam?s eyes cracked open slowly. The hospital equipment around him gave him a fright, but his memory settled back into focus.

?The accident?.ooooo?..my head??

Liam raised a hand and rubbed his head, noticing the drip inserted in his arm. He winced. All his memories were a painful blur. Some of them didn?t make any sense at all, like the strange Spanish guy?and the whip?the room swirled again.

?Ow??

Liam glanced over at the girl dozing in the chair beside the bed.

?Who the heck are you??

She continued dozing, must?ve been awake for a long time?

?Hey gorgeous! Hello?? he said, much louder this time.

She stirred and rose her head from her hand. She seemed awfully glad to see him, but Liam couldn?t place her face to a name?her face rang a bell, something told him she was important to him?but he didn?t know why?

?Good, you?re awake then. Feeling alright?? She said warmly.
Liam looked confused.

?Do I know you??? He muttered slowly. ?For another?where am I? Is my sis ok??

Jaudiar?s face fell. He couldn?t remember anything, he still thought his sister was alive?totally clueless to the fact he killed her?

?I?m sorry, I?ve really got to go?? Jaudiar rose slowly and left the room, familiar of pinpricks in the corner of her eyes.

The door closed softly behind her.

Liam looked very, very confused. He raised a hand slowly to his head, he flinched as it strayed across stitches. The room darkened rapidly and he fainted from over exertion.

Jaudiar swore quietly, then wrenched open the door to his room again. He was fast asleep, but that would end in a moment. Ananda had already told her what needed to be done, and it would be done quickly. Siren opened her eyes and stood up from her chair. she followed Jaudiar in and sat down next to her. Rae quietly shuffled in, and sat down as well. The three women watched him quietly. Sad and depressed.

Jaudiar: ...he still thinks she's still alive.

Rae: Aww....damnit.

Siren: I wish we could just leave this all behind. It's obvious that SYF is responsible for his pain.

Jaudiar: We couldn't of done anything to prevent it. Could we have?

Siren: .....no.

Rae: What about the time when he was whipped....by me?

Jaudiar: I have been whipped, and visited the victem over and over in jail. He is forgiven, but must live. So must we all.

The three women conversed quietly, unaware of the hidden wires taped to the IV. Jaudiar's eyes snapped, and she looked at the drip on Liam's arm. It wasn't right. She walked over and touched it. Liam didn't move. Then she ran her fingernails around the edge. And felt it. With a swift tug, she pulled the whole thing from him and threw it into the corner. Rae swiftly moved to the IV bag and looked at it. She read quietly to herself, then swore again.

Rae: Isotonic .....Valium. And what looks like Pereniazol.

Siren: They're trying to make him forget.

Jaudiar: ...and keep him out.

Adam stared at the scene through the window. It was double-sided glass, and often used by the agents to keep criminals and wanted men under surveillance. He watched as Jaudiar pulled out the IV, and sweat began pool on his face. It was going wrong. No one should have found the switched bags. He'd forgotten to change the labels on it, but no one would have looked at it unless they were suspicious. He cursed and left the room, hurrying to his office.

Using his phone to dial the number, he called Nicholas' head honcho - Blair. 'Todo deshace. Ellos tienen funda la gota. Hará sólo los toma tan largo darse cuenta quién trata de destruirlos.'

Blair replied with a calm that had sustained him through the toughest of times. 'Ellos no averiguarán, a menos que usted los dirá. ¿Qué quiere que haga usted, para acabarse en su hermana y parientes?'

'¿No. no. ...No. que yo no los saldré. ..but hace Rae obtiene su protección cuando finaliza?'

'Es la única razón por qué Nicholas no la ha cazado abajo todavía. Ella es la familia, por distante que. ¿Sabe ella?'

'No. Ella hace no.' They rang off seconds later, Blair once again reassuring Adam that they would not find out. Calm, Adam placed the phone on the reciever, and turned to go. Rae was standing in the entrance.

"How dare you?" She spat, then turned and walked away.
___

*"it's all falling apart. They've found the drip. It'll only take them so long to realise who's trying to destroy them."
*"They will not find out, unless you tell them. What do you want to do, run out on your sister and relatives?"
*"No....No. I will not leave them...but will Rae get their protection when it ends?"
*"It is the only reason why Nicholas hasn't hunted her down yet. She is family, however distant. Does she know?"
*"No. She doesn't."

The women waited. Soon the chemicals would wear off and hopefully Liam would wake up as the same old Liam. But that all depended on how much damage the drugs had done?

Liam stirred slightly. His eyelids flicked open and he rose sluggishly, as though in water. He held his head and glanced at Jaudiar.

?Hello again gorgeous,? he said cheerily, ?so any news on my sister?I tell you what, I?ve got the biggest headache?ouch, and the weirdest dreams, I tell ya. Since when had I been in the field long enough to get a custom weapon?? He chuckled. ?Parachuting, weapon dismantling, the whole kit and caboodle.?

Jaudiar and Siren were silent. Liam?s cheery nature was almost frightening. So this is what he looked like before four years of missions got to him?

Liam continued grinning.

?So what?s the goss??

Still no response, his nature was slightly overwhelming?that voice, it was practically drowning in ?happy.?

Liam raised an eyebrow,

?Uh?can you put your eyes back in? You?re freaking me out now.?

Liam noticed the absence of the drip in his arm, the incision had a spot of blood on it and remnants of tape around it. He noticed the drip hanging useless by the IV bag.

?What the?what?s going on??

Jaudiar: You are not really new in the field. You have been serving for 4 years, and over that period, you became dark and dangerous. Paranoid of people always hunting you, and the death of your sister, by your hand.....was too much. We tried to stop the SYF, but they got you trusting them.....

Liam: .......

Rae: And I was the one who whipped you, that's why your back aches sometimes, and you dream about whips. The SYF is corrupt.

Siren: They are going to undoubtedly cause your destruction. We are being watched right now. And they know we're on to it. We can do nothing....but that is life.

Liam: Damnit.

He ran his fingers through his short hair, pupils dialating and contracting. Jaudiar sat down on his bed and took his hands in hers.

Jaudiar: Don't worry. That's our job. You just keep on recovering.

Liam rose up to protest and babble inconsequential questions. Jaudiar sighed and stroked the side of his neck.

?You don?t listen do you?? she muttered softly, and pressed a pressure point.

Liam fell back to the bed unconscious.

~~~
Liam settled into a painful sleep. As the drugs wore off, his suppressed memories filed back. His mind burned and he tossed and turned, as each painful mission was experienced again in full colour, gory, detail.
Hours later, Liam rose from his bed. His eyes were back to their alert and wary state, but a fire was back inside. Liam pulled the hear rate monitors off his chest and threw the covers off, proceeding to change.
Five minutes later he was marching through the corridors of the Intensive Care Unit. Much to the nurse?s surprise, he checked himself out and left the building under his own steam.
Fifteen more minutes later he was at the SYF headquarters. He waved to the security in the lobby and entered his access card and PIN.
Nothing happened and his card was spat out in tatters.
Liam turned around, the two security guards rose and walked towards him, one had handcuffs.
?I?m sorry Li- ?.kid, but I?m going to have to take you under arrest, you?ve just entered a stolen card.?
The security guard waited until a tour group was out of ear shot and whispered,
?Liam big problems, something is seriously wrong, the Commander has just been told that you are to be placed under arrest immediately. Sorry kid, but you?ve got to come with us, it?s just orders.?
Liam nodded slowly. He knew the guard, his parents had been good friends with his wife and kids?he?d even played with the kids when he was little?he wouldn?t lie?something was wrong, seriously wrong?
The cool heavy hand cuffs were placed on Liam?s wrists and he was lead out of the lobby.
Jaudiar, Rae, and Siren watched him go. They sighed quietly....as a collective. The three stood up and stared at eachother.
Siren: I'm going to go make a phone call.
Rae:...I'll go with you. Jaudiar, you know best.
Jaudiar: Neh, not really. But I'll try.
She stretched and massaged her temples. Life was a pain. A big pain. She stood up and followed Liam's path, running silently on her toes. It wound through the guards, out the lobby, down the stairs, to the corridors deep beneath the ground. She followed quietly, melting into shadows and such. The door opened for them, and she followed quietly. Once inside, the door clanged shut, and Jaudiar leapt to the darkest corner. And there, she waited.
Commander: ...well then Liam.
Liam: .....what?
Commander: Stealing a card? Killing people without orders?
He stopped his tiraide and looked into Jaudiar's corner. She stood up slowly, and walked over to the desktop. She stared at him with the insiduous eyes of her family.
Jaudiar: Don't lie to him. We've had enough of that.
Liam grinned and said, ?Hello again gorgeous.?
Jaudiar gave him a small smile and continued glaring at the Commander.
The Commander coughed, looking extremely uncomfortable.
?Head office wants someone to take the fall, with Liam?s medical record, and the fact he almost killed an innocent. Liam is the one to take the fall for all of us.?
Liam was still smiling. It was amazing how much better it made him feel, the fact that it unsettled everyone around him was just a mere coincidence?
?Fine. I?m taking the fall then am I? For all the damage done to the premises, those innocents killed in their apartment, those seven guards of ours killed, an elevator shaft, the fact everything had the sultry smell of a rat, I?m getting blamed for it??
?Yes.? The Commanders face was grave. It must be serious, he usually gave all his agents free reign, Head office must be really spooked.
Liam drummed his hands on the desk. After looking around the room, he leaned forward in his chair and steepled his fingers.
?The question is, who is the rat? Am I the rat? Or is it you? Or could it be-
-Adam.? Rae said as she too stepped out of the shadows.
Liam looked mildly surprised to see her.
?Well that explains a few things?Adam is in charge of all this,? he gestured with both hands, ?he also has complete control over our missions. Guess what I remembered when I was under? Adam had complete control over Jessies missions, I actually remember him blatantly insisting that he be the only one to know where she went. He was also the one to suggest us to be split up??
Jaudiar: ....
She wasn't terribly surprised. Adam had never really shown up to their missions until the very end. And somehow, they were always traced back to ....dead ends.
A series of images rushed through her eyes. And she frowned with confusion...which quickly gave way to annoyance....which quickly spiraled down into absolute fury. She clenched her teeth and balled her fists.
Jaudiar: ...I am going to destroy him.
Rae: ...you have no family ties, that actually sounds pretty good to me.
Commander: And you are tied to Lidan's family, in Guanzhou?
Jaudiar: Yes. You read the files Ananda threw at you?
Commander: ....yes I did.
Jaudiar: Then let me go. I can handle it. I have to deal with this by myself. Not only has Adam pulled the cowl over my head, he has also masterminded the pain given to Liam. He had nothing to do with this. The head office, simiply put him in there. And you now need to use him as a scapegoat. I've had it up to here.
Her eyes were now sparking a golden yellow, and her hand was raised above her head. She growled deep in her throat and gave the Commander a look that shook him from head to toe.
Liam: ....sounds good to me.
Siren dropped into the room via the vent... Right behind her a tall sandy haired man droped beside her...
Siren: Behold... The remmants of the Kojia familly... This is Serric...
The man's green eyes glittered dangerously and Siren threw a companionable arm about his shoulders... The commander blinked and his mouth dropped open...
Commander: You brought Serric Kojia into the headquarters...
Siren: Mm hm...
Commander: The one you were sent to kill over two years ago...
Siren: Yes sir... Now... He's here to help us, so I won't have you tryin to get him behind bars till after this is over and he has a head start...
The commander glared bullets at her and Siren gulped and turned to Serric...
Siren: Brother of mine... I belive I may have to join you...
She pulled a pitious face and Serric raised one sandy eyebrow...
Siren giggled and turned to the others...
Siren: Jaudiar, Liam... Fill me in?
Rae shifted from foot to foot, chewed her lip, inspected her nails, and finally said, "Well, I'm not going to be needed for this part. I'm going to go and do...something." She wandered off absently, knowing this was strange behavior for her.
She left the complex, heading along the street to the cafe she'd been using the other day. She needed to see Matt.
There was a nagging feeling that he'd be at a University. He'd always wanted to go; they'd discussed their degrees when they were younger. A smile played across her lips as she remembered a fleeting glance at one of the boy's polo shirts. She knew the University.
2 buses later, and Rae was at the campus. The question was, where would she find him? He wouldn't go around saying his name was Matt, would he?
It was pure luck that one of Matt's friends found her. "Hey," he said, "you're the one Aiden was talking to, aren't you?" She nodded and he held out a hand. "Nice to meet you. Mike."
"Do you know where he is?"
"Yeah. He'll be in the mess hall now. If we go quick we could catch him as he's leaving."
"Thank you." They walked quickly, Rae almost running. She skidded to a halt as they found the campus dining room. "Where is he?"
"Erm..." the guy replied, his eyes searching the room. ?There.? He led her over, calling out as he went. ?Hey, Aiden. We?ve got a friend to see you.?
Matt stood up and walked over to them. ?Heya.? He nodded his thanks to Mike, then took her arm. ?What are you doing here??
?Matt. I want you to tell me what happened. Adam?s set us up again, and I need to know how he operates.?
Liam stretched, placed his feet on the table and put his hands behind his head. The Commander sighed and shook his head, irritated.
?Quite comfortable?? He asked.
?Very, actually.?
Siren tapped her foot.
?So is anyone going to fill me in on this? I didn?t bring Serric all this way for no reason y?know.?
?You, Serric and Jaudiar and going to fly off to some exotic location and do something interesting.? Liam said. ?I however, who is now under government arrest for?what as it know? Treason? Ah yes, Treason. I, who is under arrest for treason, will be staying here and moved to an unknown location, fully devoid of all arms and weapons because my government sees it fit to sacrifice one to save them all.?
The Commander sighed.
?Yes, yes. How very well put.?
Jaudiar cracked her knuckles and Liam just continued grinning. Something was ticking over in his mind but he wasn?t going to divulge it any time soon.
The Commander was unnerved. Liam had the look of one who was holding a very large bomb in his arms and wasn?t concerned where it landed, as long as it went off with a bang. He squirmed slightly in his seat. Head office ordered for Liam?s arrest, and what Head office wanted, Head office got?
?Liam is correct?? The Commander said, shooting Liam a glance, ?he will be removed by the Government and will go on trial?I am, however, allowing this other?expedition to continue. Keep it secret though, if internal affairs gets a whiff of what?s going on, the SYF might be shut down for good.?
Liam whistled to himself and checked his nails for non-existent dirt.
The Commander shot him another glance. The flight to the trial was going to be a long one?
She smiled and blew a kiss in Liam's direction. Serric followed her movement, until she vanished into the shadows. Her voice was heard again from another direction, and he found himself looking into huge silver gold eyes.
Jaudiar: Let's go then. And Liam....
Liam: Huh?
She tossed him a deck of cards and a lighter.
Jaudiar: For the trip!
Then she turned and departed, the guards stepping aside quickly. The maniacle glint in her eyes warned them of the consequences if they didn't.
Liam grinned and played with the cards in his hands. The Commander sighed as the door closed behind the three.
?Right.? He said. ?We leave now.?
Liam nodded and rose to his feet. As he did, his ring on his right hand hit the table. The Commander looked down at the sound. Liam raised his hand and showed him the ring.
?Liam?? The Commander muttered, ?hand it over. You know you?re supposed to relinquish all weapons.?
Liam chuckled.
?Not likely. As far as everyone is concerned, it?s really just a ring.?
The Commander grated his teeth as Liam and he left the room. His eyes strayed across to the ring again. It was still there, in all its lethal glory, if you could call it that. To the untrained eye it was just a normal ring?but it wasn?t. It was a custom-made six-shooter ring, evolved from the original bulky design of its ancestor. Smaller but no less lethal. The Commander made up his mind and chose to ignore it.
Liam whistled and played with the lighter in his hands. He was grateful that the Commander had abstained from placing handcuffs on him. It would be rather undignified?
Liam and the Commander left the lobby and made their way to the parked limousine. The chauffer opened the door and the Commander entered. Liam climbed inside and made certain he was as far away as possible from the Commander, and as close as he could get to the table.
The Commander poured himself a drink and Liam set out the cards in front of him on the table.
Liam sniffed the pack. He knew that smell?realisation dawned and he grinned when he realised what the cards were really made of.
?Well, well, well Jaudiar, the gift wasn?t as cryptic as I thought.?
The Commander glanced at him.
?What was that Liam??
?Nothing Sir, nothing.?
The Limousine started up and entered the traffic.
Matt shrugged, eyes darting around in a paranoid gesture. "He betrays you the same way he protects you. Calmly, in a facade of the bumbling person in the wrong job. I always underestimated him. I'd figured out a month before the mission that he was the rat. I was about to tell the Commander when I was sent on that mission. It was a death trap. Literally. The only way I got out alive was because I figured it out halfway there and bailed out of the helicopter just before we landed. For some reason, they thought I was dead or in the helicopter. It blew up. They never found my body because I didn't die."
Rae sighed and dropped her head down, staring at the pavement in the bright light. There were ants scuttling around, and all off a sudden she was feeling a tad lightheaded. It occured to her that eatinbg was a necessity in life, and the fact that she hadn't eaten in a few days probably meant she should eat. Soon. Her stomach piped up, seconding that notion. Dear God, what she would do for a nice steak or lamb cutlet. Practically drooling, she thanked Matt, stood up and staggered down the concrete to collapse at the front gate. Crap, She decided, I think I've been drugged.
Jaudiar and Siren exchanged a glance that spoke nothing, but meant everything. Like twin whipcords, they flashed down the hall to the front doors. They were quick to find Rae collapsed on the ground. The men soon followed, and Jaudiar cradled Rae's head in her arms. She listened for a heartbeat while Siren felt around for a pulse. They found both and immediately relaxed.
Serric: She needs to eat.
Jaudiar: We need to get her to our room. I have the IV set in my closet.
Matt: ...do you have a full lab in there too?
Jaudiar: Partial lab....it's still missing the electron microscope.
Siren: Come on!
Liam lay on the plush seat of the limousine, inspecting the fine stitching on the ceiling. The trip was boring, the Commander was boring and the ceiling was boring. He may be a well trained secret agent of the government and knowledgeable in all arts of war, but somehow his easily bored teenage nature had popped up in a prominent part of his brain and was screaming ?boredom? at the top of its lungs.
The limousine slowed down and went smoothly over a speed bump before drawing to a halt.
The tinted windows in the limousine wound down and a burly sentry peered into the limousine. His eyes strayed over the Commander and to lounging Liam. Liam raised an eyebrow at his gaze and did a theatrical brush off wave with his hand while saying,
?All is well, now go away, your presence galls me??
The Sentry laughed and waved the limousine on, Liam allowed himself a chuckle and sat up, watching the landscape as it quickly vanished behind the tinted window. The Commander shook his head like an embarrassed parent and shot Liam a withering glance.
Liam ignored it and climbed out of the limousine as the door opened.
?Pretty fancy?? He muttered sarcastically when he saw where they pulled up.
Liam took a few steps back to read the large plaque on the concrete wall.
??Youth Correction Centre For Special Cases,? huh. So much for a court case.?
Liam shook his head and entered the lobby, the Commander followed through the automatic glass doors.
A man in a crisp suit greeted them and said in a quiet tone,
?Hello Master Cameron, Sir,? he saluted the Commander, ?I will be your defence attorney, if you would kindly follow me and we will discuss the situation before court comes into session.?
The man walked briskly away and Liam followed, pulling a card at random from the deck in his pocket, Queen of Hearts. How quaint?Liam smiled and let his thoughts wander.
