Pop

I was just looking at a few boards and I noticed that no one seems to like pop music. Do you like pop? If so or f not, why so? What do you think of the current state of Pop.

My opinion: I lik pop music. Hell I'll listen to any and every type of music there is. The only thing I hate is he curret commercilization of most forms of music, when music is supposed to be like poetry to a beat: expression of th artist views of the world. What are your opinions?

I have no problem with pop itself... but with every other genre there's just too much crap clogging up the good stuff. And I find boybands actually to be better than they get credit for most of the time. Their music to me isn't very appealing - but their style, at times, is more traditionally pop (though they have been moving away from that lately it seems) rather than this new pop/rap/r&b/hiphop/techno mix that is so prevelant these days.

The best thing I find about pop is that you can dance to it....

Er... I absolutely loathe Britney Spears, but I gotta admit, her 'Slave 4 u' and 'boys' are pretty fun to dance to...

*dodges tomatoes*

But... I definately prefer rock/alternative or hip hop... ^^

Yeah, Juuthena, I know what you mean. I don't, under any circumstance, dance (and would rather die than actually dancing), but you'd be right in saying they are good songs to dance with. Most of my friends will, and I like the film clip to Boys, especially the mansion thingy there...

As for pop...its so hard to find pure pop these days. I actually dont mind it, though I do prefer something less upbeat.

I like pop, too. The problem is that pop really means popular music of any genre. Nevertheless, I like "pop" pop. Britney Spears can't really sing, but she's one hell of an entertainer. Same with N Sync, I suppose.

I've noticed that pop music starting to branch out more and more into other genre of music. Britney and Justin are getting rappers and hip-hop producing team The Neptunes to do a lot of their songs. Meanwhile, non-britney-esque singers like Vanessa Carlton are going for something different (in her case, centering herself around her piano).

That reminds me, I gotta get that new Vanessa Carlton song... :D

I dont know. I think that this statement is one of the most hypocritical things Ive heard in a long time. Whats left classical and rock? You listen to em all man! WOOO!

As TN said...pop is kind of a vague word...but anyways I'll get my opinion. I've never liked pop, I absolutely cannot stand Boy Bands at all, I mean all these girls envy them just for their looks, so they become so popular. It's just stupid, you should get credit for talent not looking good, at least that's my mentality about it. I won't lie though, I'll listen to pop if the signer/band/group's got talent and good lyrics. Like Michelle Branch, I like her, she has wonderful talent and is a good writer to match. I'll listen to any music, but I mostly listen to various forms of rock.

Exactly. People forget that "pop" isn't really a genre of music. Pop means "popular". So, any type of music can become "pop".

I guess most people associate pop with stuff like Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears...and in that case, I can understand why people can dislike pop.

But there is a lot of good pop music out there. It depends on where you're from in the world I guess...and what kind of music is considered "popular" in your country.

I'm not that big of a pop fan anymore, but some pop is decent. and you gotta give credit to some boy bands, not all of them got into the business just by their looks (or who their brother is *cough*Aaron Carter*cough*:butthead:, but you can pretty much tell which ones got in that way). for example, I don't think NSYNC deserves all the hype they get (or got, anyway), but they're still pretty good if you look at it from a vocal stand point. they really can sing well, now if only they'd stick with a capella or something. or get some original music (or write some, for a change). or if they were gonna stick with the 'true' boy band stereotype at least be able to dance decently :cross:. but they are talented, I don't think it's fair to them to say they're horrible simply because they're a boy band. same goes to other boy bands, too. it's different if you just don't prefer it, but it's stupid if you don't like it just cuz everybody else hates it and you don't bother giving them a chance.

I can't stand Boy bands, they all seem the same, and they most always have 5 guys. not 4 or 3 o.O, anyway. i think it's a load of weak, watery, crap. No offense, bu thats just how I view that boy bandish, Britney stuff.

I like alternative music, like Heavy Rock, and of course, J - Rock!

J Rock, (Japanese Rock) is not that easy to get a hold of over here though, bloody shame :( some of the J artists can rock it up quite good :)

Stupid me. I forgot to specify. I was talking about "stereotypical pop", boy bands, teen stuff, but I guess a lot of you thought ahead. Cool. I got sick of boy bands a while ago because they pretty much put out the same stuff over and over again. I like some of them, I have the BSB's greatest hits album (*hangs his head in shame*).

Aaron and Leslie Carter would be great musicians if their brother wasn't part of BSB. ANd I can't stand these reality shows that make one-hit pop wonders like O-Town and Eden's crush. What's the point of having all this hype follow it if the "star" produced isn't going to follow through with a real career.

I always wondered what happened to all the good pop. Alot of great artist have just been disappearing after one, two, or if they're lucky three hits. Samantha Mamba, Debelah Morgan etc. are some examples. I tend to get more into pop that has real talent to it. Vanessa Carlton and Michelle Branch are great and I hope they last for a while.

The only boy band I hate honestly is Dream Street. That's the biggest marketing ploy there is if you ask me. Aaron bothers me to an extent too... He is only able to put out things because of his brother, because really, he isn't that talented. I might as well buy those stupid Kidz Bop CDs I see on TV all the time. Bleh.

I'm not into these other bands, but I can certainly tolerate them.

so what if he does? maybe it's called 'having a wide variety of musical tastes instead of closing yourself into only one genre of music'. until you can sing better than someone off of 'Nstink', you don't have any room to talk about who doesn't have any talent.

Hey, Nstink has no talent whatsoever. The only reason they are as popular as they are is because they have good looks. And yes I do have a talent, everyone does.

then what you just said makes no sense. anyways, it takes a lot of talent to be able to sing a capella well. NSYNC has sung a capella before, and they did a pretty darn good job at it, too. as for their looks, I don't find the whole 'pretty boy' thing very attractive, so their looks don't have anything to do with how I look at them as performers. I'm sure there are other people who like them for their talent rather than their looks also.

if I didn't know any better, I'd swear you were a 10-year old. I also remember that others on the boards are supposed to respect other people's personal opinions, as long as they're not being rude about it. so since you've already said your piece about how you don't like boy bands a good number of times as it is, you can stop, I'm sure people have already gotten the picture.

Dragon Warrior,I think most people define boy bands as typical 5 guy bands, like the Backstreet Boys. If not, then there are some brillaint boy bands around, like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, anyway. Pop music, as James said, is just popular music, I've heard the Chili Peppers being describes as pop, but I personally wouldn't consider them such.
Pop music is ok, sure, there is way too much crap pop music, but it's like that with everything, there is always crap.
I listen to everyting, execept for country, sorry.
Pop music is fine to listen to, in the right atmosphere, like at a dance. At a dance I generally don't care what they play.
Yeah, it's all to do with where you are, and if it's right for the mood aswell, it can be anything. Most of the time, pop goes fine.
