NeoCactuar
In Sony latest sales releases they claim to have shipped over 40 Million PS2s. That compares to Gamecube?s 1.5 million. And X-Boxs 274 000. There have been more copies of GTA VC reserved than there have X-Boxs sold. Now that says something about the X-Box. Here's the full article for anyone who wants to read it. Semjaza
Huh? That's comparing worldwide shipped PS2 numbers to some random GC and Xbox numbers that are apparently including only Japan. Shipped is not the same as sold. GC has something like 4.7 million sold worldwide and Xbox is at like 3.8. Those numbers are way off lol. Not that I think anything will catch up to PS2, but that's besides the point :). NeoCactuar
Whoops sorry, those GC & X-Box figures are only from Japan. But still, look how far behind they are. And i know what shipping is, but it proves there is a huge demand for PS2's :P
Sephiroth
Shipped? I thought 40 million PS2's were sold worldwide I see the Xbox is still doing terribly in Japan
Guest Renegade V2
But you have to remember PS2 was released a year earlier, so it had a head start. :p But that last statement.
There have been more copies of GTA VC reserved than there have X-Boxs sold. It's similar to american cars in japan. They just flop. Aside from Halo, Mircrosoft isn't giving anyone a good reason (yet)to get phenomial exclusive games that are just for the Xbox. Even Halo is making its way to the PC now so people won't need an Xbox now to get their hands on their own copy. Xbox should start doing better in following years after they finally release some of those good exclusives but I don't think it's enough to topple down the PS2. NorykoAngelcry
I guess PS2 just came out and picked up the PS1 market. While yes, I am aware that people play the PS1 still, that is just more fuel for Sony's fire =) The sales of Nintendo, while I want them to be WAY higher, I think will still be short. If anything, I think the next coming year should show a bunch more GAMECUBES being sold everywhere, with all the great huge titles they have coming out. I just think most youths feel that the GAMECUBE is just a kiddie system, and I think that really hurts Nintendo. Real gamers give it a chance, as do parents with young kids, but the age that I suppose controls the market - the Tony Hawk group - will continue to buy the PS2 since it is . . . totally cool dude! Oh well. . As for the reserving of GTA: VC toppling over the X-Box's sold - O.o I am amazed by that!
Galvatron
Yeah I had PS1 then I got the PS2 The main point to the PS2 succses is the sequals like Final Fantasy
RicoTranzrig
The PS2 is clearly in the lead, stats or no stats, you can tell from the empty PS2 shelves at launch date...which is really good for those faithful to the system. For me, I picked up on the Playstation because Sqauresoft moved there and they left a huge impression on me on the SNES. So that's kinda how I was able to tell...but now that they're producing an FF for the GCN...I'm not so sure that lead might last as long as the PSX's did. James
Two issues here. First, shipped PS2s is no indication of sold PS2s. Microsoft actually quotes its shipped numbers, indicating that sales are lower than MS reports. On the other hand, Nintendo only accounts for units that have been sold from retailers. Second, out of the entire PS2 userbase, the software penetration is very low. Several million PS2 users don't even play games -- they bought the machine for its DVD movie functionality. And there are figures that actually suggest that the average PS2 owner only buys games fairly rarely; meaning that DVD movies are still the top selling software for the machine. So yeah, the figures are a bit misleading in some respects. But if you understand the breakdowns and look at the software penetration, you get a better idea of how profitable Sony is with PS2 overall.
Semjaza
Sony actually counts PS2s as sold as soon as they are finished at the manufacturing plant and on a dock. Either way, they still have a massive lead.
