I HATE pop...Avril Lavigne is the only exception.
Gyah.. >.< Well at least you classified her as pop.. so I won't say anything more to that..

You won't really find me listening to anything other than punk, ska, hardcore, emo, some metal, some grunge, and a little bit of goth in there. I'm starting to take to some classical, especially Beethoven. The only problem with classical is that pretty much every song is relatively long, thus if I were to try and download one, it would take a pretty long time.

I can't stand pop. It is either too happy, or pathetically depressed about a girl/guy that broke up with them that they had known for a week. Rap today is absolutley horrible. It makes no sense what-so-ever, and when it does they are only talking about blood, sex, and booze. I can tolerate 'old school' rap, which was much more raw and real. It sounds like they actually put some thought into the song (and yes, I can actually classify them as a song). I can't stand to listen to country. It is too twangy, and I don't care to hear about how sad they are that a stampede of cow ran over their 'love'. So yeah...

What is punk, anyway? And don't go giving me that "state of mind, kick a trash can" stuff I read somewhere around these boards a while back. :)
Seriously, though. I don't know whether I like punk or not. What are some good examples of punk bands?

And just to stay remotely on topic...
I don't necessarily hate country, it's just that "twangy" sound that gets me. I like the blues, so I can usually tolerate anything that cusps the blues/country borderline. Although real blues is better.

Hehe, it was the "And don't give me that 'state of mind, kick a trash can' stuff" that made me laugh. I wasn't laughing at you so don't worry, it was a good laugh. Really it is hard to put a definition to punk because it is very general, and nothing is really the same as there are different kinds of it. So the only way to describe is to use those vague and somewhat complex phrases about it. Most people think it all sounds the same, but they just aren't listening close enough. :p For example, when I first heard AFI (my favorite band) I thought they were really monotonous and such. After actually listening to what they were saying and borrowing one of their CDs from a friend, I heard more of their music and read the lyrics, and that's when I realized how good they are.

Good examples of punk bands would be of such: ... well.. after some thought. I'll just link you to my SLAM Omaha profile. Scroll down a bit and there is a pretty big list of bands. Most of them are punk, a few are hardcore, some are ska, some emo... and Tenacious D who are a comedic rock duo, lol. But yeah, you can view that here: http://www.slamomaha.com/profiles/profileView.asp?id=8343

Down with Blue Pepsi, up with Code Red.

Punk encompasses a lot of things honestly. There are a lot of variations to it, and I find that half the punk bands I like are considered "weird" by my other friends that are into punk. Some people just like hardcore; I know a kid only into political stuff like Propaghandi; another into just poppy punk. There really is a lot of it.

Personally my favorite punk band is Apocalypse Hoboken. They are from Chicago, and were considered a breakout band in the Chicago scene... Doesn't seem like they really got anywhere. Their last CD was on Kung Fu, and was more experimental than straight out punk, but still damn good. I've yet to meet more than one other person that even likes them lol.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. All I knew about "punk" is that it's a word Shakespeare made up, it's a style, a type of music that I probably do or don't listen too, and nobody seems to agree with the media's definition of it.

Some of you may laugh at my question, but at least I asked. There's a whole lot of people out there who call Avril Lavigne "punk" (but I know pop-rock when I hear it. I find it amazing that so many people hate her simply because the media put her in the wrong category. Her songs are half-decent on a pop-rock level.)

So thanks again for clearing that up. I can now honestly say I do not hate punk rock... although I'm really a fan either.

*tunes back into his neo-soul music, which nobody else on this board listens to* :(

I like punk. What I don't like is rap. Most rap songs don't have much of a tune to them, but then there are some rap songs that do. One of my favorite songs is a rap song!!! (I like almost every song sung by Eve) hee hee hee

Oh great, now I can't get the song "Who's That Girl?" out of my head...

I really like eve, and alot more rap...
but... some of the rap... (called 'pimp' in my area) I really don't like. They don't have muchova tune, and all they do is rap about bad things, just to be thought of as 'badass' as someone else said...

Some rap is really good. I really like eve and eminem, and alot more where that came from. ^_-

What I never understood is how someone rapping about all his cars, millions of dollars, pounds of gold jewelry and his hoes appeals to any average person. I mean, how the hell can you relate to a song like that?

The music videos that incorporate that drive me insane too... Rap videos where the guy is like hunched over shaking his fist into the camera and rapping, while 100 other people are like dancing, grinding and acting "badass" in the background. But that's me lol.

Other than those rap songs, I don't really have a final damning opinion on rap. I will listen to some of it if it's good (generally the songs don't appeal to me though),and I do like some bands that incorporate rap/hip hop into their sound (G-Love and Special Sauce, Butter 08, Cibo Matto, etc --- Definately NOT a fan of Linkin Park, Crazy Town and that other stuff though).

What I do hate is when some jerk drives down the street pounding the stuff in his car to the point you can hear his car windows rattle.

When obviously she doesn't know the half of it. She comes off really arrogant about it too, which annoys me to no end. Not to mention her music is absolutley horrible.. I think I'll stop there.
