Desbreko
Blegh... I just heard on the local news that E. coli has been found in the water around where I live. So, now we have to boil all of our water for five minutes before drinking it. This really sucks... I do find it rather ironic that only a few days ago I learned a little about E. coli in biology, and how there's different strains of it. Kind of weird to think that the same species of bacteria that's living in my stomach right now, helping me digest food, could also make me really sick just because of one little difference in its DNA. :whoops:
Justin
I thought that you were referring to that whole "There's something in Otaku's water" thing...lol -Justin
Sara
Heh, where are you? I know Milwaukee area's prolly about due for another Cryptosporridium outbreak. And with all the spiel about dumping sewege in Michigan, well.... I remember having a big to-do about boiling whater when I was back in second grade.... I was at school, in the library, and there came on this announcement about how we weren't allowed to use the bubblers anymore. When the bell rang, all the bubblers we closed up, covered with duct tape. It seemed to last forever... Best to you, Des. Hope no one gets too sick. E. coli can be nasty... ::looks at Justin funny, and falls off the face of OB:: There is something in the water....
Genkai
bubblers... heh heh heh.... we call them water fountains... but our school put's SOMETHING in them, though maybe not E. Coli, so we stay away...lol
Desbreko
Lol, I immediately thought of that when I heard about there being stuff in the water, Justin. I guess I shouldn't have been drinking my own water... :nervous: And I'm up in northern California. There've been a couple things like this before, that I can remember. Lol, bubblers... I actually like that name better than water fountains, or drinking fountains, or whatever. :)

I can imagine having to boil water being an inconvenience. Just be glad you're not like this friend of mine, lol. RicoTranzrig
I should be careful then if the strain moves south...but it's probably really local...I could only imagine how it got there...never happened in my area though.
zidane11
There has never been any problems with the water where I live. Do they know what is causing the problem? Good thing I don't drink much water, I wouldn't really have to worry about it.
Sara
Bubblers, yes, bubblers! Tch. I guess it's a Milwaukee thing. I've never heard it anyplace else.
Lady Asphyxia
...We call them bubblers here (Australia). They are tainted. I will not touch them. I've found blood in the bowl thing before. We call fountains water fountains... anyway, I expect it's an inconvience. In the old days way back when, the kids had to take Brandy and alcohol to school because the sewerage and drinking water got mixed...*shudder*
Semjaza
We have problems with e. coli around the beaches on Lake Michigan here in the summer. They have to close down some of them every so often. I don't like swimming in that dirty lake anyway, so I don't mind lol. Last time I went swimming there I came out with a 6 pack holder and some newspaper on me. Quite sad heh.
Shy
I'm the stereotypical So-Cal resident, so I drink bottled water mainly. It is scary to hear about E.Coli happening up North, hopefully everything will turn out ok in the end. -Shy
Kent
If you want to hear something really odd, get this. The ecoli in our stomachs is there when we are born. That same ecoli, when in our blood stream is very poisonous. that means it has no way of passing from mother to child while in the womb. This has bothered scientist for a long time because they have no way to figure out how the ecoli gets there. What do you think?
vegeta rocker
sounds like it sucks. I get water from a canal how safe is that? Well i hate how boiled water tastes, even after you cool it down tastes devoid of all flavour.

If it did, then we wouldn't have 'flavored water' (the kind that is carbonated and tastes like different fruits and stuff). Drinking water is like breathing air, unless there's something altered about it, it shouldn't really have a taste.
Sara
Ugh, I hate bottled water....I can't help thinking it tastes like plastic. I grew up on city water, and well water's good. I like it, I guess, because my grandparents' have it...and I love anything/everything about their farm. Ah, yes...Good Ole' Michigan. It glows at night, you know. _ _ Actually, I live within walking distance [three blocks and fifteen blocks] of two beaches, ZooBeach [by the city zoo] and North Beach [south of Zoo beach.] It wasn't so bad this past summer, but the year before, I think they were closed more days than they were open. I swear, I'm never going to be able to move away from the Great Lakes. I'd go into withdrawal or something. I love living by them...

That's all the bubbles that come out when you boil it... I think. Where I live now I've never heard of anything about virus strains in the water. But earlier this week this truck with pink coloured paint or poison or something like that crashed into the river so they've stopped taking water from there for about 2 weeks. It's a good thing I live in NZ now... Before in China (where I was born) you wouldn't dare drink any form of water that was not boiled first. And after you boil it there's all these dirty stains on the kettle/pot/thing. It's all the heavy dissolveable metals. It's even worse around the Yellow River where there's all this sand and dirt in the water as well (that's why it's yellow). Consider yourselves lucky. (Hey! You wrote in indigo too!)

Sara
Water's chemical formula is H2O. The chemical make-up is not changed when water boils. It's only a phase change--liquid to gas. If O2 were given off, you'd end up with a great...lack of water. It would be chemically different, and no longer H2O Elsewise, I'm failing Chemistry...:whoops:

PiroMunkie
Gah! Why didn't I think of this earlier? Wow I'm dumb. Yeah, Cera's right on the chemistry stuff. When you boil water you are killing all the bacteria and impurities in it. So it is the lack of presence of those things that makes it taste different. Meh, I really should have known that right of the back. o_O
Foredaddy
I have a little water supply humor for ya. :) A couple years back in the town where I go to school, there is a water tower. Now there was a weird/cool/crazy kid who used to do all sorts of insane stuff. Well aparently one time he went to the top of the water tower and crapped into the water supply. He never did get into trouble for that. Noone knows the truth, but him. You really needed to boil the water then. imagine trying to get the poo flavor outta the water. Yuck. This same kid was a pretty good friend of mine and he died 5 days before graduation this year. RIP KJH. :(
