How we love to complain...

Is it me or is there always a group of people who are never happy with the quality of "western anime".

whether its editing or dubbing. Voices or wording, theres always something to grip about.

no matter what we do, the two main societies involved have totally different standards of what is acceptable and with that in mind we all must realize that almost none of the anime we watch can be seen in the U.S.A. with out editing.

The language gap is so wide that no matter how good a tranlator you get you will always have dissrepentcies.

does anyone else get tired of criticism and no complament.

Like how nice it is to see this stuff with out paying 30 dollars a tape. come on, its on cable and right there. lets enjoy it.

Well... okay... some of the dubbing is okay, but abouthalf of the ones I've seen have been pathetic. I like the anime itself, but some of the dubbing totally changes the whole storyline, making events seem comepletely pointless!!

*eyes dbz*

I usually rent the dvd's of dbz, now, because the dubs made it much more confusing. That's one reason why some people complain about dubbing.

I actually didnt know there was plot and story in dbz people like myself, (dbz only through toonami didng get to know), didnt get to see.

Im really interested to know what those points toonami fans didnt get to learn about.

If you want to post them in the dbz area, I would really like that.

And Im really not trying to be sarcastic, I love dbz and want to know for honest reasons.

I only buy stuff with subtitles at this point. I like checking out the dubbed versions, and I will watch them... mainly because I just don't feel like reading the entire show with my eyes glued to the screen so I won't miss something.

A lot of dubbing is just crap... Voices don't fit (too young or too old is usually the problem), some just aren't timed well and most are simply just half assed.

I can think of a few good dubs offhand, and I don't care if someone else prefers dubs to subs. I'd personally rather watch the anime in it's original form though, and thankfully DVD is letting me have my choice.

Oh boy...- -

Alot of the anime I've seen have that problem. Although in the japanese versions, some have it where 21-year olds sound four... o_O

Not often though...

Anyway... in some of the subs I've seen, a 43-year old person sounds 70-ish... it's annoying and just... strange...

there are a couple of series I don't mind seeing dubbed, but there are very few of them. the dubbing for pretty much everything else ain't that great.

oh, and if you wanna really see how bad DBZ dubbing is, watch Kung Pow: Enter the Fist, then watch a couple of episodes of DBZ. only after I did that did I really see how bad the DBZ dubbing is, you'd be surprised at how the 'dubbing' qualities are so similar, lol.

well, I do have tapes of dbz in its original form and I would say every one here has a good point.

the voices in the original are better and the actual wording is much less, "adult".

curse words and stuff like that are in dbz and im willing to bet a lot of toonami fans didnt know that. oh well.

I still like to take what i can get.

And it's usually always the people who haven't seen subtitled or whatever who like dubbing and wont bend their prideful wills to see something better because they know they are going to be proven wrong. Alright then, let me get started.

Dubbing sucks because, like you said, the voices don't match up and their just plain stupid. It also sucks whenever they change voice actors from season to season, making it confusing, unclean, and even more stupid.

Now, editing. Let me see here. If they have to edit it so much from the original that the only recognizable thing is the series is the name of it, then it's not fit to be aired on television anyway and they have no business ruining the series. When you edit an anime series, you are taking away from what it really is and conforming it to stupid American standards. If that's the case, keep it off the networks.

Now, there are some tolerable dubbings that I like. Such as Fushigi Yugi, Nadesico, Trigun, and some others. But to take up for DBZ is INSANE. That show sucks beyond belief, and I think it would dubbed OR subbed. NOW, if you didn't realize that DBZ had a plot and storyline and you are a fan, then you really are naive...aren't you?

^_- don't forget CB!! I also think the dubbing for bebop was really good. Some of the voices I like better on the dub, and others, in the japanese version.

And omg... kung pow.... that movie was... kinda pathetic... I wasted ($5 at the time, thank gawd) but would have wasted $9 if I moved here to San Fran two weeks after seeing it.

All they did was comepletely dub a bruce lee movie... @_@

*ahem* and Tori, I totally agree with you... - -
The fight scenes seem senseless really... Why would they have a fighting tournament for little kids anyway?

And about the editing... why is it that the strongest fighter in the world says 'darn' when his friend gets killed? :therock:

yea, Im wondering though, Juuthena, who didnt know there was a story to dbz. I believe you said that there was a story no one who watches the dubbed ones gets to see.

oh well, im still an advacate for showing chopped up, crapy, no good voice, dubbed and edited shows for the exact reason I mentioned above.

I just dont have the money to buy 20-30 dollar tapes that give me only 2-4 episodes out of 200+. and thats just dbz, I still would never find the money for cb, a new show to me, inu yasha, any of the gundams and a whole bunch of other animes that Ive seen on cable. (cant forget my child hood fav. ronin warriors)

Im glad they show this stuff, even if it is bad.
bad is still better than nothing at all.

I never said I didn't know there was a storyline to dbz. I just started renting the dvd's two months ago, as I said in another thread. I just said the fights seem pointless and sometimes annoying. I know the story, it's just that some of the events seem confusing at times, that's all.

I believe I haven't...
If I did, that would be before I started renting the dvd's. I moved to San Francisco in june, and I started renting in july. Until then, I only saw the dubs.

sorry juuthena, I didnt mean to come across slanderous or anything.

I also didnt mean that you had insinuated you didnt know the story.

I just get jumpy when we talk about dbz.
What can I say, I love the show. Even with a lack of cursing, bad dubbing, voice actor changes, and edited violence.

I haven't really seen a dub i prefer or the sub. I think the Ranma 1/2 dub is pretty good and I consider about equal to its subbed counterpart, but that's about it. While it is cheaper to watch edited anime on TV versus buying its true form on DVD, you can find good fansubs online for free if you have a good internet connection. It's a lot cheaper than buying the DVD and you get it uncut and unedited.

If you love DBZ so much, then why are you worshipping it here and not in the DBZ forum? There aren't really many people here who like DBZ, and many of us can barely tolerate it. I cringe when I hear it spoken of, that's how much the series digusts me.

And yes, I know that there is cussing in the original. And yes, I know that Master Roshi is a perverted idiot. And yes, I know that this series is much older than you and there's no such things as a new episode of DBZ. And the last season of DB is DBGT. That's IT.

dang gonit, queen asuka chill out man, well girl.

I wasnt trying to worship dbz here, I just ended up mentioning it because it was brought up.

I wrote the thread to talk about other anime and their differnces in original form compared to the english forms.

also, I am older than dbz db or gt. I believe its in my profile if you wanna check.actually I think its you that is younger than dbz.

also, I dont believe I ever reffered to any eps of db as new, and even if, it was in the context of new to cartoon network/america.

you seem to be an anime elitist. am I right or are you just being hard on me because I like dbz and you hate it?

by the way, do the cb dvds have the original dialoge availible in the options?

No, I'm not hating you because you like DBZ. That would be a stupid reason to discriminate. I just don't agree with your opinions. And how old are you anyway? I dont' feel like looking in your profile just to see...

Now, another anime series I can tolerate dubbed is Ranma 1/2. I LOVE Shampoo's voice. ^_^

I would have to say that I like the dubbing on cowboy bebop.

Each charactors voice seems to fit the anime's intended personality.

asuka, Im sorry to argue so much, my bad.

and as much as I would hate to say my age in a post, Im 21.
and since I believe you were born in 85, that would make you younger than me and dbz, although I may be wrong. but atleast Im willing to honor my argument with a one second view of an opposing opinions profile. sorry but I dont take arguments well. even if I was right or wrong, they always suck.

Don't think it's just America that screws over just anime dubs. Everything dubbed is screwed up in some way or another. Have you ever watched The Simpsons in a foreign language? It's never the same.

So... all I can say is... it's not just precious anime that's screwed up with dubbing. Everything, everywhere, is screwed up by dubbing.

So learn Japanese mazaafakka.

I have no Idea what you just said there... :therock:

oh yeah, and btw, gotenks, you can't be older than dragonball. The anime came out in 89', but the manga came out in like, 73'..
er.. I think...o_O

Guest Hikaru Ichijyo
Well I'm pretty sure everyone knows my stand on dubbing, I hate it, I don't respect the companies that dub it and ruin a good show. Some companies that come to mind are Funimation. As for the comment about no anime coming close to its translation in dub format you are wrong Mister. Robotech's Macross Saga was very accurate to the script for the exception of one or two episodes being majorly edited to link it with Southern Cross.

Only after seeing (or hearing) things like that can I comprehend Q Asuka's hate for DBZ, and dubbing.

However, I've noticed that you have a problem noticing the difference between "Dubbed Animé" and "Edited Animé".

A huge percent of "Dubbed Animé" manages to keep the storyline faithful to the original, and voices that fit the characters. In worst case scenarios, they may remove some nudity or cursing.
Examples of good "Dubs":
Cowboy Bebop
Yu Yu Hakusho
Fist of the North Star
Sorcerer Hunters
Metropolis

"Edited Animé", on the other hand, is usually aimed at a younger, "mainstream" audience, and it is toned down according to it. However, if done correctly, it can still be a good adaptation.
Examples of good "Edits":
Digimon Tamers
Tenchi Muyo
Sailor Moon (early seasons)

Thanks for reading! :D

I can't believe you just said that what DiC did to Sailor moon and R was good editing. They totally slaughtered those seasons. The voices....the scenes I(end episodes) they cut out, and the language that they changed to make the show more juvenile... It's just awful. There is no way that could be good editing. The later seasons weren't that bad once Pioneer took over. The subitled version is still much better, but hey, at least Pioneer left the original music unlike DiC who threw in some techno crap.
