Dex and Sol

My English teacher seems to think I have a tad bit of writing talent (in the creative sense), so he forced me to write a story during 2 lessons (50 minutes each). Therefore, this story may not be my best, but any comments or suggestions are very welcome, thanks.

The water glistened in the moonlit sky, as the great ship ploughed through the water, waves bouncing off the bow. Two figures stood watching the nearby islands, wondering why they had decided to go on such an insane trip for the sake of gold. Even after all they had been through these two friends were not prepared to fight or risk their lives, but they still maintained an ?anything for money? policy.

A short, bearded man stepped off the wheel of the ship, allowing the sails to keep the ship in the right direction. He had difficulty climbing down the ladders due to his short legs. Upon getting to the deck where the two friends were standing, he caught his breath and began to speak.

?I ?ope you two boyos are ready for this here adventure?, he slapped one of the friends on the back, causing him to wheeze.
One of the friends replied in a sharp tone, ?yes Mr. Captain sir.?
The old man laughed and looked at the other friend, who had a weak smile on his face. ?And what about you?? The old man asked.
?Oh, yes, I?m ready. Dex, want to um, get something to eat?? He winked at Dex, who saw that his friend was in need of a talk.
?Ah, yes I could really go for a meal, lead the way Sol? Dex replied.
The Captain of the ship wondered what was up with the two men who had come along for the search for gold. They would be good diggers, the Captain thought to himself.

Dex and Sol stepped into their cabin, holding onto the bunk beds to stay upright, as the ship rocked more and more violently in the waves.
Sol looked at Dex worryingly, and began to speak.
?I really don?t think this was such a good idea Dex.?
Dex looked at Sol surprised, ?why not??
?I don?t know, it just doesn?t feel right, y?know? This Captain guy is just plain strange, and this is going to be the third storm for the past two days.? Sol sighed, hoping that Dex would make the right decision.
Dex sat there, open-mouthed, and began to laugh. ?You want to sacrifice a future of riches and wealth because it doesn?t feel right? Ha! You can jump ship if you want, you can meet me later at my castle in the city, where I will be bathing in gold.? Dex walked out of the cabin, letting out the occasional giggle at Sol?s ?feeling?. This time it was more difficult, as the storm had worsened.

Dex stepped down into the dining hall, hoards of pig-faced, sweaty sailors sat eating their food as fast as possible before they had to get back upstairs. They knew a storm was brewing and that they would have to march upstairs and man the ship whether they had finished their meals or not. Walking over to the counter saw Dex getting an angry stare from the ?chef?, a sailor drafted in to cook meals that were unrecognisable piles of slosh. The ?chef? lifted a large spoon and dumped the slosh into Dex?s bowl, who then walked over and sat down between two huge sailors. Trying not to get pieces of food from other peoples mouths in his bowl, Dex listened in.
?an? then the storm grew even bigger, me an? the boyos were tuggin? on the ropes, ?opin to stop the sails from collapsin?.?
Barely able to comprehend the sailors story, Dex started to get out of his chair, when suddenly an enormous hand pulled him back down to his seat.
?You?re one of the new lads aren?t ya? Those boyos lookin? for gold on Kilm island??
?Yes, I am? Dex replied, with a little croak in his voice.
?Ha! You got no chance of comin? off that island alive boyo? the sailor chuckled.
?Why not? We?ve got a map and plenty of equipment? Dex replied with pride.
?Tis not the finding of the gold you should be worried about, tis the people who live on that island. They?ll kill ya they will.?

Dex left the dining hall with a little worry in his head, he and Sol were only small folk looking for gold, and these people didn?t sound like the kind of people you want to stay in contact with. He decided to keep his little secret to himself and headed off to bed, holding onto the rails all the way.

?Dex! Dex wake up will you!?
Dex sat up to see Sol standing over him. This isn?t right, he thought to himself. ?Did you switch beds with me? We already said I would get the top bunk!?
?No you idiot you fell out of bed in the storm, now get up.?
Dex sighed and began to sit up, his spine ached from hitting the hard wooden floor during the night. He and Sol strolled up to the main deck, where the Captain and the sailors were bringing the sails down.
?What happened?? Dex asked the Captain, who had a very serious look on his face.
?Ah, the sail was ripped during that great big storm last night y?see, and we have to row the rest of the way.?
?How far to Kilm?? Sol asked the Captain, who was now staring at the two friends.
?Ah, only about 25 miles North, you?ll be rowing too I assume??
?Well, you see, Dex and I aren?t too good at the old rowing, we?re not too strong in the old arms.? Sol waved his arm at the Captain, who wasn?t buying it.
?Well you can swim the rest of the way? replied the Captain.
?Ha! Good joke Sol, real good. Ah we?ve been rowing since we were young mr. Captain sir, we?d be happy to row for you.?
?That?s better, now get downstairs and start rowing!? The Captain shouted.

Dex and Sol ran down the stairs, almost falling over themselves. They each manned an oar and began to row to the drumbeat. 25 miles later they could hardly speak, while the sailors went upstairs for lunch, Dex and Sol sat downstairs catching their breath and dripping sweat.

?Here we are boyos, the island of Kilm!?
?Thank? You? Mr? Captain? Sir??

The two friends stepped off the side of the ship and onto a small rowing boat, in which they hardly rowed to get to the island, as the gentle waves carried them in.

The white sand welcomed Dex and Sol, allowing them to sit back and watch the crystal clear water slowly move up and down the sand. The friends checked their provisions and stood up, ready to look for gold.
?According to the map we have to walk 3 miles in?? Dex looked around, ?that direction?. Dex had his finger pointed at a large forest, filled with birds and other animals.
?Seems fair enough, do we go in and come out the other side?? Sol asked.
?Nope, we will be pretty much in the heart of the forest, since it?s 6 miles long and 6 miles wide.? Dex put on a nervous grin, as he knew Sol hates situations that seem not quite right.
?This doesn?t seem right? Sol said nervously
?You know what, I knew you were going to say that Sol, that shows how much you say it. What harm can we come to? We?ve got great big spades and pick axes, so if a forest Bear decides to attack we can beat it back! And besides, this is a deserted island, so we?re bound to find the gold without any trouble with people.? Dex didn?t know if this was true, but he needed to shut Sol up so they could go into the forest together.
?Fine, but if we get eaten, I?m blaming it on you.?
Dex breathed a sigh of relief, ?onwards!?

Sol pulled out a large knife and began slashing through the shrubs and large plants on the floor of the forest, slowly but surely the pair got into the middle of the forest.
Suddenly the pair stepped into an area with no trees, and a giant Aztec pyramid shaped building in front of them.
The building had been ravaged by years of no occupants, dust covered the outside along with plants growing in cracks. Sol stared at it while Dex kept checking the map for any sign of the building. Nothing.
?How the hell did this get here?? Sol exclaimed
?I haven?t got a clue, but this is where the gold is, onwards!?
?Stop saying that! We just stumbled across a giant great big building in the middle of a forest on an island that?s supposed to be filled with gold! Don?t you think someone lived or still lives here??
?Maybe, but why would they abandon this building that?s supposed to be full of gold??
Dex and Sol stared at each other, even though it was a little scary they really needed the gold. Well, need being such a silly thing to say, since they didn?t actually need the gold, it was more of a desperate attempt to be rich.

Dex and Sol searched for a door, the yellow dust coated the entire structure, filling some cracks and getting into the eyes of the pair. Eventually, after much searching, Sol discovered a vertical crack in a flat part of the building. Calling Dex over, they both agreed on the fact that it was the most likely candidate for a door. Deciding on most likely plan of action, the two grabbed a small tree and cut it at the base. Putting it as far as it would go into the crack. Both took a side and began to push, wedging the door open. What greeted the friends made them wish they had never come up with such an idea.

Gold littered the enormous room that greeted Dex and Sol. Along with the gold, a large group of native men gave the pair a special greeting, with their weapons.
Due to their extreme lack of fighting ability and overall fitness level, the friends surrendered and were taken deep inside the structure. As they watched the gigantic door being closed Dex thought about what the sailor had told him. Even if incomprehensible, the sailor had made a point, the pair?s chances of getting out alive were slim at best.

Dex and Sol awoke to find a tall, dark man standing over them. He was holding a spear and he looked like he had been in his fair share of battles over the years, with scars dotted around his body and one of his eyes seemed to be consistently closed.
?Get up, now? the man had a deep, piercing voice.
Dex and Sol complied immediately, both managing to scramble to their feet besides the massive headache from the hit they must have received earlier.
?Follow me, or I will kill you.? The man was blunt with Dex and Sol, very blunt.
Arriving in a lavishly decorated room, (all gold of course) Dex and Sol could only gawp at the walls, floor and tables as they walked towards a rather fat man sitting on a gold plated chair with a purple back.

?Why do you try and kill us?? The fat man said, with a deeper voice than the guard.
?Hold on, wait a second!? Dex was flailing his arms wildly whilst he spoke, causing the guards to become unnerved, they drew their weapons and put them up against Dex?s neck.
Dex discontinued his flailing, and allowed Sol to speak, who moved so little it looked as if he was doing a ventriloquism act.
?We?re not trying to kill you, not at all. I mean, look at the size of us compared to you. I mean, I?m not calling you fat or anything, you?re just bigger. I mean everyones bigger than us here. Not that you?re all fat, oh we?re doomed.?
?Nice one, idiot.? Dex rolled his eyes and began to accept that he was going to die.
The fat man sitting in the chair looked confused and began to speak.
?Did you come for the gold? The gold is ours and ours alone, no one can touch it. Many have tried to steal our gold, and they have perished trying, you will face the same fate.?
Dex and Sol almost began to cry, they were only small, simple men, trying to steal gold from an ancient race. In their mind they had done nothing wrong, but obviously their minds were those that had not been excellently educated.

Sitting in their poor excuse for a jail cell, Dex and Sol awaited their execution. Sol had an idea that was on the extreme side, especially for someone like Sol, who was cowardly at heart. Using what little water they had, the pair soaked their clothes and wrapped them up into a baguette shape. They flung one end of these at the guard, the shirt stayed in shape and was pretty heavy due to the water. Catching the guard round the neck Dex and Sol tugged hard to bring him against the cage. Whilst Dex struggled to hold the guard in place, Sol stole his makeshift keys, which comprised of rusted pieces of metal. After unlocking the door, Sol swung the door up against the guard, knocking him out.
?Time to run Dex! Dex?!? Sol looked around, he saw a figure running down the distant corridor, Dex obviously had the same idea 20 seconds before Sol.
?Wait up Dex!?

Dex came to an abrupt halt outside the fat leaders hall, who was still sitting on his chair. However, this time he was asleep, obviously stuffed as his golden shirt buttons heaved, ready to explode off his chest. Dex decided to take the route around the leader that provided him with enough gold to ?place? in his pockets.

Trying to make as little noise as possible, Dex and Sol crept around the leader?s chair. Guards were not present for some reason, Sol thought they must have been scared to wake the leader up. In reality, they had gone into a back room and had been playing games since the leader fell asleep. Dex delved into the pile of gold, stretching high up until it touched the ceiling, the gold shimmered in the sunlight emanating from a crack in the wall. Dex pulled his hand out to reveal a large wad of gold, which he quickly stuffed into his shirt pocket. His trousers were next, bulging from the amount of gold Dex had put inside them. Trying to walk without sounding like Santa Claus on his sleigh, Dex led Sol out through a small door behind the gold mountain.

The pair stepped out into the sunlight, which temporarily blinded Dex and Sol, being locked in a dark little room for ages will do that to a person.
Upon regaining his sight, Dex looked around for any obvious routes to the old Captains ship. The problem was, everywhere the pair looked was exactly the same, trees, trees and more trees surrounded them, and with no map they were virtually stuck.

Meanwhile the leader had awoken from his slumber, and since he was a man who needed to be entertained, he called in his guards.
?Get me the two who tried to kill us.? The leader still speaking in a voice deeper than the guard Dex and Sol had earlier, which was quite an achievement.
?Yes? the guard said, bluntly as ever.
Moments later the guard came running back, catching his breath he told the leader the pair were missing and another guard had been knocked unconscious.
?Find them and kill them, now.? The leader was not in the mood for his guards to go on another trivial capture.

?Dex, you hear that??
?Hear what??
?About 40 armed guards with deep voices charging out of the pyramid most certainly after us??
?Oh right? That.?
?Please pick a direction to run in, quickly.?
?We came in Northerly right??
?Yes, your point?? Sol was getting anxious.
?Our clothes are drenched with water, wring the water out into this bowl and get a blade of grass, quickly!? To Sol, Dex was raving on like a madman, but he obviously knew a way to get out of there. Sol complied and Dex put the blade of grass on top of the water, it floated and ended up pointing north. Dex looked at where the South end was pointing and shouted ?that way! Run!?
By this time the guards were pretty much on top of Dex and Sol, their little legs swinging like rotor blades through the forest, trying to escape. After 3 miles of screaming and guards with incredibly low voices, (must be the island) Sol caught sight of the Captains ship, which was almost beached. Sailors were just getting back onto the ship after a ?daring? mission (by the Sailor standards of the island) to collect food. Upon sighting Dex and Sol along with their guard pursuers, the men scrambled onto the ship as fast as they could, ushering Dex and Sol to run faster.
The ship was leaving, fast. The sailors threw a rope down to the pair, who were now trying to run waist deep in water. Grabbing onto the rope the pair were dragged behind the boat. Clambering up the rope Dex and Sol could hear the guards screaming in low pitch tones.

Throwing ropes down to the men at the port, the sailors walked down the side of the ship, happy to be home. Dex and Sol marched down triumphantly, Sol knowing that Dex had ?recovered? enough gold to make them very happy indeed.
The route home was a perilous one for the pair, as known thieves and desperate men decided to stop and stare at Dex?s pockets for unordinary amounts of time.

Sol sat down on the leather chair at his home, welcoming the soft creak of the wooden floor panels. Dex walked in, a look of shock and dismay on his face.
?What?s the matter?? Sol asked.
?Well, you know we were beaten about quite a bit, and our clothes got rather mangled??
?Yes.?
?Well there appears there were holes in my pockets, so we have enough gold for only one thing.? Dex stood there, preparing for Sol?s reaction.
?What?s that?!? Sol was wondering what crazy scheme Dex would come up with this time.
?Enough gold to pay the captain for a round trip to Kilm island.?

The End
