FFXI: U.S. Release: Yes or no?

According to Eletronis Gaming Monthly FFXI may never reach the U.S. It says:
...Kicking off the Square rumorpalooza this month is that Final Fantasy XI, the online installment of the series that gamers are currently enjoying in Japan, may not get a stateside release at all. Why? With the servers to mantain and police, techinical support togive, and games to monitor, the RPG maker's U.S. operation can't do it alone. Only something the size of EA or Sony could lay the proper ground work. Without that, the game, may haveto skip a U.S. release entrely. What does this mean to you, the scrawny lil' American gamer already in the midst of posting this nasty rumor on message boards across the Internet? Three possibilities. One, Square secures a partner to do the dirty work and the game's released here next year no problem. Or, the next FF to be released on PS2 in the U.S. could be XII, skipping XI entirely. The final option is that one or all three Final Fantasy Gaidens based on FFX scheduled for release in the near future in Japan may be brought to America as XI...
Yeah, I read that in EGM too, and I don't believe it. Why? Well, first off, they'd probably loose a buttload of money since, from what I've heard, more people in the US have net connections and would actually be willing to pay the monthly fee than in Japan, and secondly, they've already shown lots of trailers and screen shots and whatnot in the US. (Can we say "advertising"?) I think, if it comes down to it, they will either have someone else run the US network, or hire people to do it., if they can't manage it right now. It would be a really stupid move for them to not release it in the US.

So far, FFXI has not been performing well in Japan.

And there is no reason to suggest that it would be any different in the United States; market research performed during the years 2000 and 2001 have indicated that over 50% of American gamers "aren't interested in going online with their consoles". That number rises when you ask people if they are willing to pay a monthly fee.

Of course, this is a seperate issue to the question of how this game could actually be implemented. Even if it can be implemented, it is still a big business risk.

So, if they can't implement it at all...then there's no chance of a release.

However, Square are still saying that the game will launch in mid-2003 (probably around June) in the United States. So who knows; I tend not to entertain rumor and speculation, I just wait for the official word.

That's from the Quartermann rumor section, most of which is pulled out of someone's ***.

I don't know when FFXI will be coming here, as the fact is the HD is an expensive, required device for this game. I personally think SCEA is waiting for some more games that will make use of this thing... For example, Tony Hawk 3 was ready for online play the day it came out, but Sony waited with the network adapter for more games to be released. I think this is the same case.

After all the hype around FFXI, I think there would be a massive outcry if it didn't come out here at all... I guess it all depends on the HD really. In addition, I find it hard to believe that Square wasn't taking worldwide server usage into account when developing this game. I also find it hard to believe that Sony wouldn't be willing to help, or even EA who helps publish all Square games now.

At least the PC version is an option though.

I think if there's any $$ to be made FFXI'll find some way to come out. They already have partnerships w/ EA, who has a bajillion $$ and the resources to handle an online game. Sony owns...what 19% of square? I think they'd want to try to keep Square as much to themselves as they can before nintendo gets too chummy. Still w/ the hard drive, network adapter, monthly fees, etc., I doubt I'd be able to buy it. Still, could always play at a friend's.

Well, according to Playstation Underground (don't ask why I'm subscribed to that lol), FFXI will be released in the U.S. in June-August 2003, depending on how it does in Japan. But an up side to being with PSU, it had a FFXI demo... one boss fight though... I don't say this about Final Fantasies, but the maker of FF must have either been half asleep when he made it or drunk, because it just... the battle system sucked, characters were so-so, overall, i'd give it a 3...

Bah. That's a completely different kind of game. FFXI is a MMORPG (Massively Multi-player Online RPG), and FFX-2 is just another 1-P quest like the other FF games. FFX-2 couldn't possibly fill the gap that FFXI would leave, should it not be released outside of Japan, because the two are completely different types of RPGs. Sure, FFX-2 may end up being a great game, but you don't get to interact with other live players in it, and go off questing with your friends.
