Bali bombing

The Sari Club at the Kuta Beach Resort in Bali (a popular vacation spot for Aussies) was bombed in the early hours of this morning (Aus time). They think it was a car bomb or something. So far, about 180 people are dead, 300 injured. It's thought that about 75% of the casualties are Australians:(. Many people think that the attacks were aimed at Aussies because of our support of the US and our involvement in Iraq.

I don't think the attack was aimed at Australians...it was most likely just aimed at "western looking tourists".

The Prime Minister said that there are many, many Australians missing at this point, though...:(

I don't get it - they're not accomplishing anything by killing people; the people you wanted to do anything with are DEAD! They're just making everyone else mad, and by regularly killing large amounts of people, the suicide bomber that "only" killd one or two people loses its enormity. I have reasoned that all of our belligerent actions were influenced and based on hand-to-hand fighting. With powerful bombs like this, it's sad we still resort to death and war to demonstrate our beliefs.

And it's sad that no one is realizing the futility of all of this: Bush is (planning on) attacking Iraq because it has weapons that can kill Americans; bin Laden has said he is attacking the U.S. because it keeps interfering with the Middle East. What happens if you let go of Iraq? bin Laden loses his argument against us; he isn't bombing us anymore, and he has no reason to use his weapons. If everyone gets revenge on each other, "An eye for an eye will make the whole world blind." We have been blinded by all of this death, and now see only more death as a response.

Hmm. Pretty cool. I'm sorry for all Australians who were killed or injured, because you arent a bad bunch ;).

But what can we expect. There's going to be more and more of this occuring, and I for one are not going to gasp everytime it happens and say it's wrong. It's just a part of life now I guess.

pretty cool? what do you mean?

Anyways, it seems like more terrorist are taking action theses days. In india, more then 100 people are dead because of the anti election terrorist group, who think its a scam. I always wonder how they think of there motives. I mean, why would it be a scam?

It has been quite a concern over here in New Zealand, because we a pretty close to this latest terrorist attack, I wish that these radicals could wake up and see that theyre actually giving Islam a bad name. I'm glad I live where I do and I'm glad that New Zealand has not been named as a possible terrorist target, I feel really bad for Bali citizens. I'll be Praying for them -_-

It really bothers me that, as DeathKnight said, it's almost becoming a part of life now. It also bothers me that some people are actually willing to accept that...

One small point.. Islam isn't quite as peace-loving as everyone claims it is. That isn't to say that Muslims are bad people.. I personally get on pretty well with several Muslims, but the teachings actually promote violence towards other religions or anyone without religion. In Islamic countries there is actually a death penalty for believing in anything else, because the actual goal of Islam is domination over other religions..

Here's one example of a site detailing some of the information: http://answering-islam.org.uk/Terrorism/peace-loving.html

At the end of the day, it's still your choice what to think and what to believe on the issue, but I'd actually look at both sides and decide how you think from that.. ;)

Personally I believe it was because we Liberated East Timor from Indonesian rule, that would probably be the one of the largest factors.

(And don't give that crap that Australia didn't do anything about it, we were the first in and the UN didn't care less until we had cleaned the country up..)

I agree with Liam. Even though it could simply be an "anti-Western" attack..some have said that it could be a Government opposition group, trying to destabilize Indonesia's fragile democracy.

The fact that Australia has supported democracy in Indonesia...and has liberated East Timor (and continues to defend it against West Timor militants) is probably a very aggrivating thing for the more hardline Muslim leaders in Indonesia.

But yeah, I'm glad Australia was involved. Had we not been, many thousands more people would have died before the UN or USA would have reacted. It was important to step in at that time.

Oh well...it's certainly horrible to think that this could happen so close to us (and apparently be so deliberately aimed at us). I just hope nothing like this happens in one of our cities on the mainland.

when was it that east Timor was liberated by the aussies.

I really think its a wonderful thing when countries with more resources and "power" go out of their way to liberate those who can not do it for them selves.

without people willing to do that sort of thing at the cost of their own lives, the world would never have been the place it is today.

I mean that in a good way.

east timor owes austraillia a great debt, and I hope they show it better than the south koreans did to my country men. (I say that with a recent protest of anti-american views from s.korea in mind. s.korean students marched with painted feet on an american flag protesting our fight on terror and possible war with Iraq.)

but for real, what year was it that Austrailia did the liberation?

I also want to say to dues-ex-machina that the totally non-p.c. thing you wrote about islam is right on, and it takes alot of courage to express those views sometimes. thanks for speaking the truth.

Speaking of people injured and dead, this morning I saw an update on the news (can't believe what more surprises me, the fact I was up at 5:40 am, or the fact I was watching the news)

Anyhow, the authorities in both Australia and Indonesia are completely baffled at why this happened. More Bali people and Indonesians were killed than any other country in the area, and no-one has said they were responsible.

Also, there were 2 car bombings, both went off simultaneuosly in well chosen parts of the island, also within the vicinity to Mosques.

Very well planned out if you ask me, they way it was done, no-one is going to be able to figure out the who and why until someone comes forward.

BTW: 13 Aussies dead, 118 injured, 200 missing.

Another BTW: An aussie had to identify 5 of his dead mates out of all the dead collected (I do not know this number), and one of them is still missing...

Gokents; Australia entered East Timor in 1999. We did so because that region wanted autonomy from Indonesia. And we fostered elections in that area.

When the elections proved that the people didn't want to be part of Indonesia, violence broke out across the region. Not only were pro-Indonesian militia attacking and killing East Timorese families...but there were reports that the Indonesian military were involved in providing arms and turning a blind eye.

So, our Government made an appeal to the UN about the problem. And the UN gave us authorisation to enter East Timor. So we sent fleets of helicopters/APCs/troops/blackhawks etc etc...

And Indonesia then pulled its own military out of there. It was very embarassing for Indonesia...and it provoked anti-Australian riots in Jakarta.

But frankly, as I said, I think it was worthwhile. Now East Timor is a free nation. And we are still there along with the UN to protect them. I'm proud of that. :)

Well, this is sad news so truthfully indeed. But, it's going to be like this more often as Bush moves on trying to destroy Iraq. It's pretty stupid of Bush, even dumber that the senate actually voted for bush to have that military action. I don't know all to much about Indonesia or Australia, I will admit, but I still can understand at least one hundred people died, and numerous were injured. Bush is an idiot. He lets his cabinet rule out all of his decisions.

A lot of people are going to blame this on Bush's decision about Iraq the War on Terrorism and Howard's decision to follow him, but you can't really blame them. These terrorists hate us, they hate western nations, they hate civilised countries. And they would have attacked us or someone else sometime whether we fought against terrorism or not.
