Tendai
First question: No. You can't place a monster in face-up defence or face down attack. Second question: I don't *believe* so, but I don't play with toons so don't quote me on it ne?

Hyper
And a rule that most people don't know: If you place a monster in face doen defense mdoe (called a set) you can still do a normal summon.
Guest BeamKirby
ok ok, you are all mostly wrong, omnislash is right. You can play a monster face up in defense mode, its a normal summon, just ni defense mode, and you cant play a monster face down in attack mode. Just Read the rule book or go to www.yugioh-card.com Im suprised that so many people are wrong on this, it makes me hurt inside. oh and hypershadow is wrong, you cant set a monster and then summon one. Hyper
Originally posted by BeamKirby oh and hypershadow is wrong, you cant set a monster and then summon one.
Opps sorry. Skipped a line while reading. My mistake. ----------------------------------------- But No, you cannot set a monster in Face-up defense postition. Read the rules:
Page 23,Last Paragraph[i/] To set a Monster Card, select it from your hand and place it face-down horizontally (Defense Postition) on an open space in the Monster Card Zone. Page 24, second paragraph under "Normal Summon" When playing a monster card to the field, a player must choose to place the card in 1 or 2 postitions: Attack position or Defense Position. For Attack: place the monster card face up and verticle (a Summon) or face down and horizontal (a Set).
Satisfied?

Valen
One question.... have any of you played the playstation version of the YuGiOh game? it allows you to put the cards face-down in attack mode in the FIRST turn they come out, or you do a Flip Effect magic card. But if you guys want proof to end this debate, here it is... "Set - The act of placing a card face-down on the field is referred to as "Set". A Set card's effect is not activated immediately. Also, a Set Monster Card is not considered to be summoned until it is turned face-up. A Set monster must be placed HORIZONTALLY, in face-down Defense Position (monsters summoned normally are placed VERTICALLY, in face-up Attack Position). Set Magic and Trap Cards are placed vertically on the field." And I go by the rules on the psx game, you CAN play a card face down in ATTACK mode the turn it comes out only. If you want to attack, you must flip it over to the face-up position to attack. Same with defense mode.
Hyper
The playstation game has slightly different rules than the actualy CCG.

Kenso
As was already stated, the VGs don't follow the same rules the card game does. And in answer to the questions: Q1: NO on both. However, once they are put out, they can be flipped face-up or face-down. Anotherwords, you must play it in either FACE-DOWN DEFENSE or FACE-UP ATTACK on the TURN IT IS BROUGHT OUT. However, AFTER a card is BROUGHT OUT, it can be flipped into FACE-UP DEFENSE or FACE-DOWN ATTACK. That is all on that one. Q2: NO. Toon monsters do not need tribues. However, you do have to pay Life Points to summon them, they cannot attack the turn they are brought out, and it costs Life Points to attack with them. AND TOON WORLD MUST BE OUT TO SUMMON A TOON MONSTER!!!
Barrel_Dragon19
I go by tourny rules...offical rule book...but another question...when you have a flip effect, let's use Hane-Hane as an example...say you put it in Face-Down Defence position...now you want to use it's effect...do you have to put it in attack position for the effect to work, or just flip it face up? Never could figure out this question...
Hyper
When you flp it from face-down Defense, it has to go into Face-up Attack. If you flip it, it has to change positions.
