This is a beginning I wrote in this "new topic" box, purely off the top of my head, using the title I wrote above. Please tell me what you think

The world looked red, dusty and desolate to Corin. Cities no longer stood proud in the failing light. Sunsets were no longer a beauty to behold, as the ball of fire had become shrouded by floating dust. This was the outcome of war.

One country accused another, one built weapons, the other built bigger weapons. This went on for years, until the delicate thread that bound peace together snapped, causing the biggest war in recorded history. Entire continents were ravaged by the terrible fighting that took place.

Corin took a deep breath and got down on his hands and knees. Slowly, he tied his bag to his back and began to climb down the hill. Upon reaching the bottom, he pulled out his canteen and sipped on the cool, refreshing water it contained.
If I carry on like this I should reach London, or what's left of it he thought to himself.

Hours seemed like days as Corin pushed through the almost desert land. Massive bombs had destroyed almost all traces of forestation and plants on the entire face of the Earth. Corin found a burnt-out log to sit on, and proceeded to make an entry in his diary.

July 12th, 2009
Day 5 of my trip.
I've moved through what used to be the forest to the East of London, and as yet I have discovered no trace of any life whatsoever, except for a few birds, which seem to be dying. I shall make an entry if I find anything.

Strapping his bag back up, Corin continued towards the great city of London, a metropolis before it was supposedly destroyed. People had assumed London was gone after the government discontinued communications on the 3rd day of war.

Corin found the assumption to sadly be correct. The entire city had been wrecked, with most of the taller buildings completely destroyed. Corin ruled out using cars to get around the city, since most of the roads had debris and pot holes littering them. He spotted an underground station, which he decided to investigate.
The further down Corin went, the less damaged the station seemed to be. He walked through puddles that leaks in the ceiling had created, moving slowly towards the train platform. He was worried that if he made too many sudden moves or vibrations, the surrounding area may collapse, as he couldn't see any damage within the walls.

As Corin stepped onto the platform he smiled. A train remained on the platform, and it seemed to be intact. Stepping into the driver's carriage, Corin studied the different knobs, dials and switches that were on the board in front of him. Spotting a lever that appeared to control speed, Corin pushed it slightly. Roaring into life, the train began to chug slowly forward, it's electric motors full of dust.

Suddenly, Corin heard a loud click behind him.
"Don't move!"
