James
But Mnemolth...respect and tolerance for life are the same thing. I respect someone in the sense that they are a human being with feelings and emotions. And they have as much right to exist as I do. That is the most basic respect I have for someone. Obviously that respect grows depending on the person. I mean...for example, I have huge respect for firefighters and police, even though I may have only met a few of them. There is an inbuilt respect in some situations, I think...based on that individual's life and what they do.
Narius
lapses in judgement are the worst enemies of calm collective mutual respect. Example you walk down the sidewalk and turn onto the street, not at a crosswalk and just walk across the street. Everybodies done it at some point in time, and a car screeches on their breaks honking the horn. Do most people stop and ask to be forgiven? no most people give the guy the finger and continue along. You were obviously at fualt, you yourself knew this from the start, but the fact the guy was angry at you gave you some sort og right to be angry back whether you actualy had a stance or not. In those circumstances Humanity truly does lose what most would signify as respect. on another spectrum you could go as far as to explain that you have the respect for a person as far as you don't pull them out of their car and beat them sensless with a baseball bat. I mean to an extent that is respect, to give a person their dignity to drive away in the situation. So it truely could be argued from many different points of view and perspectives. In my case I give people the "Respect" that I don't kick them in the face just for walking by me, as far as that will take you, but if you want respect, you want me to stop and talk to you because I respect you whenever you walk by, you gotta give me a reason, I don't stop for just anyone. Unless their hot, inwhich case I stop whether they want to talk to me or not. Oo.
Mnemolth
Cera: I would put 'nice' somewhere below 'respect'. The over use of the word is unfortunate and perhaps a sign of laziness, but there is not, at least to me, the level of importance associated with it as with a word like 'respect' or 'love'. As for being wary of posting in my threads.... *glances at his Mindless Banter thread in the Fanfiction/Poetry forum* ...now I wonder why....;) James: Do you respect the person? Or is it something else you respect?
James
Mnemolth: I respect the person. I respect them as a human being. I might not respect them as an artist...or even has a nice person. But I respect them as a fellow human being. So, that's the most basic respect. I can see why you'd differentiate it from respect of the person...but for me, they are both one in the same. Of course, I have that basic respect for everybody...with maybe a few exceptions. It's like with ProudClod for example. He said really nasty things about Sephiroth...and is generally incredibly nasty to anyone he talks to. Despite the fact that I don't like him -- I do respect him as a person. I would not want for him to be physically harmed or killed. But by the same token, I accept the fact that he isn't a nice person...and I don't respect him as an individual. If that makes sense. :drunk:
Mitch
James is just saying what I said before, Mnemloth. Respect has different levels. The lowest being respect because they are a human, an individual. So I still do believe someone can respect everyone, but it's just a weakend form of respect.
