Manic Webb
With Disney's Treasure Planet coming to theatres, I started to realize a couple of similarities between Outlaw Star and the original Treasure Island. The main character of "TI" is a boy named Jim Hawkins. One of the two main characters of "OS" is a boy named Jim Hawking. Both seem to be around the same age. Hawkins was a fun-loving kid who was a bit reckless. Gene was a bit reckless. Sea Ships, Space Ships... okay, that was a bit vague. The crew of "TI" is looking for Treasure Island to find an obscenely large amount of money. The crew of "OS" was looking for the Galactic Layline, where they could have found money or power. Both series had a band of ruthless pirates. There's a nobleman in "TI" named Trelawney who is quite rich. Sound familiar?
Ryuujin
I dunno it could be similar but I doubt it was any kind of spin-off of OLS. Thought the creator may have gotten his ideas for alot of it form OLS. You never know. Lataz -OutlawDragon
Shy
Jim Hawkings from Outlaw Star is loosely based off of the Jim Hawkings character from the nove "Treasure Island". If anything, Outlaw Star is a rip-off of that story. -Shy

I don't remember much about TI, so i can't really tell you that, heck same for OLS for that matter. Lataz -OutlawDragon
Shy
Treasure Island is probably 90 years old, while Outlaw Star just celebrated it's fifth birthday. -Shy
Ryuujin
90?!?!?!... OK then OLS could have been taken from TI but they seem too different to me. Sure I can see the name but the plot doesn't seem the same. Maybe I'm just weird. Lataz -OutlawDragon
Manic Webb
Treasure Island is so old, any traces of copyright has dissolved from it (that's why Disney is making a space-aged adaptation. No royalties.) Every filmed adaptation of Treasure Island is old than Outlaw Star (except for Muppets' Treasure Island). When you think about it, the plots to both series' center around a group of treasure-hunters who are avoiding pirates. Plus, both Gene Starwind (OS) and Jim Hawkins (TI) have dead fathers to think about.
vegeta rocker
well that depends what you mean by rip off. I am not extremely familiar with outlaw but what were their names in japanese? Why were the names they have now chosen? If someone can answer that which im sure someone here can then you will more than likely answer their question. But without that info i say yes its a rip. p.s. I noticed the sims between treasure planet and ols also. Especially the big cardboard ad at the theatre. Guest Ami
They are incredably simalar, but I think it was just a coincident!
Spikey
But was Jim Hawkins really an outlaw. He wasn't really, I believe. But at the begging he is. See, there are a lot of stuff the same between them, and yet a lot of stuff different. Weird though how they are the same in wyas. -Spikey
Juu
Aha! That's where I've heard that name before!! I knew heard something similar to Jim Hawkins, or something like that. ^^; I do see a few similarities, quite alot actually. Jim really reminds me of Gene, even though Jim was a little more... Disney-personality-ish. Not exactly as outlaw, but outlaw. It was a pretty good movie though. I saw it at the Imax. ^_-
