Well then. This si the topic of discussion. is there a really a normal. More like, is there a definition for normal? Please respond to my opinion, which sounds more like fact.

I have not fouynd a definition in the dictionary for normal. however, this is mine.

Normal is somethign that our society started. it picked a certain group of people, and extpects all others to conform to it's status. if your not, then you are classified as " weird", or" insane" Why classify a certain group of society ** in this case, in high school, preps** as normal? What makes them so different from the rest of life? besides the fact that they live differently, dress differently. and are generally, idiots.

Now, there are some, that i do have respect for, because they can hold an intelligent topic of conversation. Hoeever, in my school, not many of them can. Ce la vie. ** i think thats how you spell it**

I believe that there is no such thing as normalcy. I mean, there is to an extent, but everyone is truly different, and no one is as normal as the other. If we were all normal, and nothing different then one or the other, then truly we wouldn't be human beings with emotions a personalities which lay out our difference from being normal and being different. But there certainly is a thing such as normalcy in other cases. Just not in an individual sense of the word.

Normal, by my definition of the way I translate is being not different, conforming to be the same as others. Being something you're not. Well, actually normal can mean a lot of things. It depends on which subject you want to stem off the word.

My definition of normal is if someone acts in the same way you would act. Like for example if you have to use the restroom. To most people the normal thing to do would be to go to the restroom and do your business. That is the way you would act. Some people may not act this way but that is a different topic and story. Like in China, or was is Japan, it is customary for one to take of their shoes before entering a house or building. That is was everyone does so to you that is normal. But you can see it in a lot of other ways and go against what I am putting down right now. That is why Mitch is right about saying that there is no such thing as normalcy. Well I would write more but I have to go.

There is no "normal" in our society. One person could think that someone with 8 fingers on each hand is normal while another might think it's the most disgusting think they've ever seen. So you see...there is no "true" normal, only people's opinion.

There is no staple definition for "normal". Normal in the 1980s was wearing tapered pants with elastic waists, while teasing your hair to make you look like an electrocution victim.

Society creates "normality" through fashion and media. It's all irrelevant.

Considering "normalcy" was a word made up by one person less than 100 years ago, I'd say that normalcy doesn't even exist. :rolleyes:

Seriously, normal is relative to the majority of a certain area. In my house, it's normal to eat dinner in our bedrooms, the living room, and rarely in the kitchen. In another house, eating dinner in your bedroom is probably considered to be taboo and just plain weird. It's all relative to where you're from; in this case, your own home.

Strangely enough, I think the most normal people are the ones who don't try to be normal (confused yet?). If you've ever seen the movie Pleasantville then you know just how disturbing and creepy a "normal" society can be. Nobody wants that. Life would be boring and creepy. Did I mention creepy?

To me, the only people that are truly normal are the ones that try to be different. Death and taxes are the only constants in this universe. What is different will soon be normal and what is "strange" or "weird" will always change.

Yeah. I know how I feel o_o;

"Normal" at my school is listening to pop music. Therefore, I am not normal I am a "Greasy Met" as they like to call me and my friends (Met = Metla = Personage who listens to metal/punk/rock, etc.) it annoys me but I just get on with it.

Try playing Slipknot to a class full of pop-lovers, I got about 16 seconds of it on before they turned it off. :(

But yes, normallness (is that a word o.O) is mostly to do with what your interests are. If your interests are't popular, or no one has the same interests as you.. then you're not normal. Simple as that.

They way I see it, "normal" is a largely misunderstood term when used by some high schoolers. Just about everyone in high school is striving to be accepted as normal, and those are the weirdest people around (even if they don't know it).

You want to be normal in high school? Stick to what you like and let the rest of the "normal" teens kick cake and eat rocks. Yes, I meant to say it in that order. If you aren't yourself in high school, who the heck are you when you graduate?

The majority sucks, they're just people that are scared to show their true feelings and views just to be popular V_V sad.. they're fake.

EDIT: Cera, I am random as a peice of something that's random. Why the stress on himself? Hmm? HMM?

And the people who go against the crowd are any less fake?

Let's not be making such large generalizations.

I not really sure I'm allowed to do this, but here is the poem I wrote. I just think it really applies to the subject, so I'm posting it. It's how I think about 'normal' (which doesn't really exist). If it's a problem, I'll delete it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
MY SADNESS
Since I was young, I'd alway try to be myself - but now I know that people won't understand unless you act like something else. Everywhere you look people preach about individuality but those have it are on the outside, punished for their special personalities. If you're quiet - you're stuck up/ outgoing - then you're fake/ smart - then you're strange/ sometimes I wish someone else would take my place. Only two truly understand me, my friends they'll always be. And the rest are nice to have around me, but they can only see.... so much, who would guess that someone like me could feel so out of touch.
This is my sadness.
A story in my eyes that most will never know, maybe I'm too complex, maybe I should let it go. Give up who I really am and what I really feel to be part - part of the crowd; something far from real. I tried it once/ it didn't last, I have to be myself - same old me - deep old me. The best side of myself.
Ironic how people act, only a few are tried and true, That's why hard to find, an open heart - an open mind, the ones who judge you based just on you. Those like me - those who are - those who know they should - those that can - those who will - those who wished they could - those who won't - those who can't - those who never will - A world that will never change, lest you be too still/ My enterprise, my compromise, my open mind, combine to make the sadness that is me.
If happy's fake - this choice I'll make - sad I'll forever be.
Darkness - That was a nice portrayal of what you thought in the poem, I would have to agree that not everyone can show what they really are in order to go with this so called "normalcy" in society. When I was younger I was probably not too much of the real me when I first moved and was fitting in with the crowds. But It pretty much changed after wards most people respect me for who I am individually, and I never really had too much problems after I stood up for what I believed in. But not everyone can truly be who they want to be when society comes nit picking.
But I agree with some people that being normal just means the average.
Normal, in my opinion, is an easy way of saying the standard you have for an individual entity, object, or any other thing. There is a different standard you see for everything. It really depends on what your standards are.
I agree with BabyGirl. What was normal 500 years ago would be considered totally freaky today. lol
And the same goes for 500 years into the future.
Normal is nothing but social trend...normal is subjective and therefore, has no defined objective meaning. Normal is different for everyone.
Some kids live in one parent families...and to them, that's normal. They don't understand anything else. Some kids live with two parents and a step parent or something...and to them, that's normal. Some kids even have same sex parents...and to them, that's normal.
As individuals if we say "that's not normal", we're only saying "that's not what most of society would do". That doesn't mean it's not right or not appropriate for the person we're talking to.
So, yeah...normal does have a meaning, but the way the word is applied changes depending on who you talk to.
If nothing is normal, then in this post-modern age, there is no truth, everything is relative and a matter of perspective. I don't buy that.
As for being called weird or insane...I don't think I have a single friend who doesn't call himself that.
Hmm....maybe you should get out more often? *ducks and runs away*
Normal is conforming with a mass group in a given situation. For example, if everyone at your school shops at wear clothes from American Eagle, listen to Eminem, and eat ham sandwiches for lunch...then that would be "the norm". A better example would be a "normal" member of the boards. The average member is between 13 and 15 yrs old, has had a DBZ avatar, and mainly posts in three forums (rarely posting elsewhere). That would be a "normal" member.
