First Impressions

Well, it was bound to happen - the first thread devoted to how you feel about Grand Theft Auto: Vice City thus far. ;)

What were your first impressions? Too much like the last game? Better or worse than the ever so popular Grand Theft Auto 3?

**SPOILERS**

I think it's pretty cool. The graphics, sadly, have not improved other than obvious minor tweaks. The gameplay, too, feels very much the same, and I felt lost when I first got it: no money, no guns, no nothing. However, the level that you start on is indeed very big and detailed, and it makes up for some of the loses. Driving from one end of the beach to the other took about a minute and a half to two minutes, and that's on a high speed car. Talk about a large perimiter to explore. Speaking of the car, the way that you can now jump out is a very nice improvement. Instead of having to slow down, you can just fall right out of the car before it blows up, adding some interesting possibilities in the future. Also, they have now added dirt bikes, as well as dirt bike courses. Very cool.

I think the best thing about this new title is that it gives you a break from the last levels, and throws you into a completely different world and timeline. Through the missions, I'm hoping that it lives up to it's name, but currently with my brother wanting to play as well, I havn't gotten a chance to try to beat them.

:sigh: Yesterday, I went to my local Gamestop to pick the game up at around 10:30 p.m. There were probably forty people in line, and more yet were pouring in. After waiting in line for fifteen minutes, which wasn't moving, everyone was told that the game wasn't coming in until 12:30 or o'clock. At that point, they claimed that they wouldn't be able to sell the game at that point. So my first impression of the game wasn't very good--even if I hadn't played it yet.

When I got it today, I immediately went to the visual options and switched the trail effect off. I'm sure that it's supposed to appear soft and colorful, to adhere to the graphic direction, but the visuals look so crisp and defined without it. Let it be known that I hate the trail effect.

Otherwise, the visuals are a little better than I initially exected. The textures aren't as detailed as I thought the Renderware technology would allow them to be, but they're worlds sharper thanks to the upped resolution. The character models have been improved somewhat. On the whole, they're much more proportionate. Even their faces appear more detailed, although they're a far cry from being realistic. The newly added building interiors looked awesome too; they feature texture work worlds better than anything present in GTA III.

The game play is refined somewhat. New weapons, outfits and vehicles that I thought I would only find later in the game, are available from he start. In fact, most of the missions I've had so far involve changing clothing, in order to fit in. Outfits range from suave suits, to overalls needed to blend in with strike workers. Hyped vehicles and weapons, namely the motorcycle and chain saw, even appear quite early.

One interesting tidbit that I've noticed, is that it is now possible to purchase buildings and an entire city block. I don't wield enough cash to actually buy them yet, so unfortunately, I can't elaborate on the effects of doing so. Maybe this has been covered in previews or media that I've missed, but I never knew about it until today. As far as getting lost, I haven't had any problems. Missions that I've played thus far, feature icons, much like GTA III, that help you find your way. I don't see how it's confusing.

Since I've only started the game, I haven't been able to explore too much, but I don't think that fans will be disappointed. The game basically does what it sets out to do. Namely, it throws the gritty Grand Theft Auto Universe into the eighties, capturing the essence of the time, while improving upon the weaker aspects of GTA III. There's nothing wrong with that, that's for sure.

What could be better than chasing someone in a golf cart hitting them head on and seeing them do a couple flips through the air into the sea. Then think about racing rc cars on a nice dirt track though a little short still cool and if that doesn't catch your fancy their is the much longer rc plane rce which is completely bad @-$-$. Then I really enjoyed carving cars and people up with my very own chainsaw and katana. I am happy this is much improved over 3 even the car handling seems better.

I must get farther in and complete more missions I was very dissapointed that there were no flyable vehicles at the airport besides rc copters. On another note stay away from the militery airfield they don't like company.

Hmm, that's interesting. It's the Trail option, right? I can't see the difference, but I took your word for it. :)

I think that the aspect I like of Vice City the very most has to be the street bikes. Apart from style, they hold, from what I can see so far, the highest speed of any vehicle in the game. The turning isn't that bad, and since it's skinny you can go many places that a car simply could not. At the moment I'm trying to find a code or something that lets you jump into the air with it. ::can imagine flying over the cars at top speed:: Scha-weet....

The difference when toggling them is even more obvious than in GTA III. Essentially, you'll get a softer image with bleeding colors.

This post will now make history, because it marks the first ever Crazy White Boy crazy tip of the day: Get a new television. :p

I did notice some cool, subtle effects worth mentioning though, like how water splashes onto the screen, how Tony's clothes ripple in the wind while he's riding the motorcycle and how wind blows dust across the ground. After going back and playing GTA III, it's also easy to appreciate the improved reflective surfaces and shading on the cars. Nice stuff.

Anyway, have you noticed that you can now hijack cars with passengers in them? It was hilarious pulling some poor, unsuspecting guy out of his vehicle and driving off with his family while they screamed and wailed. Oh, and some of the new animations, such as jump kicking pedestrians off their motorcycles, priceless.

Such aspects, along with a generous increase in vulgar language are certain to make Joseph Lieberman hot.

That's a real bummer, since I can wait for it's arrival here in Kiwi - ville. Like NeoCactuar, I would express my rage at this, but since
I don't even have a ps2 yet, I'm not too fussed.

It will be interesting to see if there is a 'blue hell' in this one.

Yeah, the television is pretty crappy, but luckily we switched the PS2 to a different one. Anyway, I just changed it, and didn't have time to see the difference. Crap, the bell!!!

I havent heard about the hillocoptors??Has anyone used them yet??And how iz tha handiling??
Calm down, lol. I havn't used the helicopters, persay. I've used a demo of them in the mission, so I kind of know the feel, but my brother has used the real thing.

Judging by the mission, it seems that it takes a bit to get used to (such as the L2, R2 rotates) but it's generally pretty easy, easier than flying the dodo plane in GTAIII.

Yes, if you've controlled the RC copter early on you'll have a very good indication of how the actual helicopter operates.
Yes, indeed.

Oh, nice avatar btw. It remind me of someone's...::GASP:: AHH!!!

And Crazy White Boy, yes, I will do it. You havn't been on aim for a while, and your pm box is full, but yes. You know what it means.

Yes, the avatar is definitely similar to Vampire Ed's. :toothy: *cough, sputter, laugh* - Desbreko

I'm also thoroughly excited to hear that you'll be my art designer. Big plans. ^^;;

I don't want to elaborate too much on that though, as I've cleared out my box. I'll probably see you on AIM as well tomorrow.

Moving onto the game, I really realized today that Vice City desperately needs a quick save feature during missions. The cops are deadly. Even with a mere two star warning, they are extremely fast, and destroy my vehicle in a matter of seconds. Body armor is a necessity on missions requiring chases.

I just wish that you could equip NPC's with armor as well. The poor artificial intelligence isn't limited to the baddies, that's for sure, lol.

I just finished the game today and picked up the Hunter. It is very nice you can take out cops and their vehicles easy still waiting to see its performance against a tank though. It only took me about 11 times to beat the last mission but it was well worth it.
Finished already, wasn't that kind of quick? lol :D

How long did it take you to complete it?

Well I was it playing from Wednesday on. Plus it helps that I took sick leave from work till Friday. So pretty much 5 days it's not like I 100% it though I just beat all the norm missions I still have cars, packages, and the vehicle missions.
