The Million Forms of Techno

I have never been a huge techno fan, but then other night I went to a rave in LA with a friend who knows all sorts of things about techno music. The thing I didn't know is that there are all sorts of different forms of techno; house, progressive trance, jungle, etc. He tried to teach me the differences between all of the styles on the way to LA, but I don't think I have a good grasp on exactly what is what.

However, I did get to see some really great artists that night, and even though I still don't really like techno, I have a greater appreciation for what they do.

Now I know that there are some techno fans here...what are your favorite "forms" of techno, and who are your favorite artists? I'm interested to see how others feel about the whole techno scene :)

Ofcourse I know. For I know all! BWAHAHA! ahem...

There's a bajillion forms of techno music. It's really insane, like you know... My favorites range from Goa Trance, Progressive Trance, pure dance music (which usually incorporates a trance-pop sound with singing) I dunno an actually name for it. House and Club music is good, but not my favorites. Here's some of my favorite songs so that you may know what they sound like to get a drift of what I like.

Sasha - Xpander (Melodic Progressive Trance sort of)
DJ Sammy - Heaven (this one is pretty popular in the states right now. This is that dance style I was refering to above)

And there's alot more, I just can't think of all of them off the top of my head.

Im a hardcore British techno fan.. Orbital.. .gosh they are the foundation of anything early-techno, and modern contemportary. They fit mostly into electronica, but songs like "know where to run".. and other fit distinctivly into the trance category. their by far most well made song is "Belfast" from their green...cd i THINK... but not sure.

Than you got your hardcore jungle an' drum'n base. My favorite jungle artists are: Dj Hype, Dilinga, Exposa-X, and PopMunkey.

Of course that leaves all sortsa stuff open, and frankly.. im not gona try getting into it. If there would be a list of my favorite techno genre folk it would be:

Orbital - Belfast
Orb (yes, a diff group) - Fluffy white clouds
Paul Oakenfold - ready steady go
Paul Van Dyke - tell me why
Ivan Van Dahl - castles in the sky
Crystal Method - bloodbath dance
Dj Sammy & Yanou - Heaven

...thats ...all my slow brain can think of for now lol

I like most forms of Electronica. I like Trance, Dance, Hard house and Drum 'n Bass. Of course, everything else is alright too, heh. 'Southern Sun' by Paul Oakenfold is still one of my favourites, along with anything by Concord Dawn or Salmonella Dub.

Yes, they vary though from a really heavy metal style to the whole electronic genre. They do however reside a lot on the whole of it. Like most good rock/electronic bands....bleh. I should just answer your question simply.

Whoa...electronic music is my speciality. :)

I don't really have time to go in-depth here (it's very late right now lol).

What I will say, is that electronic music (because it is often not built with traditional instruments), is frequently misunderstood and labeled as "uncreative".

However, the thing I love about electronica is the fact that there are no boundaries. Don't have the right instrument? Create your own from scratch.

It's what I love about it...it's so flexible. It can do so much more than any other form of music on Earth. And as technology improves...it grows, expands and reaches new heights.

In the right hands, electronic music can change your entire reason for being. :)

A lot of the time when I play around with my own music, I kind of end up inspired a little by electronic music.. Normal sounds can often sound a bit too flat, until you decide to distort them a little.. so yeah.. I actually tend to write worship songs, but I put a bit of electronic influence in there to make it sound almost unearthly..
