Censorship in the Media

hmmm... I think censorship is all well and good, though they can sometimes get a bit carried away..

The media is a funny old thing- they'll censor some things which just seem stupid, and they'll let other things on the air which are pretty distasteful- like the recent Pot Noodle ads in the UK (but that's just my opinion on them)..

I think a lot of the time the problem isn't necessarily censorship, but more 'editing stuff to say what we want'.. which is a kind of censorship, but you weren't particularly specific as to which type :p

and I think at times the bigger problem with the media is they can be such a pain in the arse..

I don't agree with censorship of any kind. However, I do believe that certain content is appropriate at certain times.

I mean, if a movie is too violent...don't censor it, just give it a rating that prohibits kids from buying/renting it. If retailers enforce these guidelines, there is no problem.

Of course, parents should enforce these things too...they should actively decide what their kids watch.

In terms of the news media...it's not so much censorship. It's spin. Spin is bad...because sometimes the media take something and rather than outright censor it...they show it and then put it in the wrong context or something.

Anyway, I'd like to hear what you think about it. It might be interesting...since it's your project. ;)

Censorship automatically has a negative connotation. It would be interesting for you to do a completely-pro position. And if you can pull it off without sounding like some extremist idiot, I would be very impressed.

Censorship is really stupid, this is because like James said, you should just give it a rating so that kids, or your average easily influenced gun wielding psycho cannot see it, simple as that.

Let the people decide what they want to watch, it should be our decision. Poewr to the People!

*edit*

Isn't closing a SPAM thread considered censorship? :p

If someone really wants to do something, a rating ent going to stop them.

While I agree that a rating system can be a good means by which to judge whether something is appropriate for a certain group, it wouldn't keep that group from getting to it if they tried.

Well anything excluding complete censorship is going to have some flaw people are going to take advantage of. Such as getting past a rating in a movie. I'm not sure what more anyone can do, if someone is determined to do anything, they are going to figure out a way to do it sooner or later anyway. Honestly, even if everything was censored it would just lead to some black market where people could get uncensored crap anyway (this already has happened in Germany to some extent with censored videogames). People find ways. I'm not sure what it is you think people should say heh.

Personally I think censorship kills off any artistic aspect something has... Music, paintings... Somewhat movies and games (if they are considered art to you). I suppose that doesn't count for something that's violent just for the sake of being violent... But a lot of art would lose it's meaning totally if it was censored.

The other thing about it that annoys me is that it's usually some old politician that found a scapegoat to beat up on. He/she turns it into like his life's goal to do something about it. Listening to these people, it's obvious they know nearly nothing about what they are against anyway (Leiberman comes to mind).

I personally don't want the goverment or some institution telling me what I can or can't see or listen to. That's all it comes down to for me. I don't really care about this moral side of it.

well this is to answer james about my view on censorship. i believe that certain things need censorship and some things don't need censorship. like dragonballz doesn't need it, because i dont think that people care if they see goku's butt. but then there some movies, like ninja scroll, that need censorship. if things like that aren't censorsed then society would become numb to them. *if you haven't seen ninja scroll, then don't because the main girl character gets raped* at least they should put like a note that says "explict content" on the box. but censorship on things like violence is just stupid. but some things should be censored for the benefit of the children, i mean my little cousin could watch that movie thinking its about ninja!

On the back of the Ninja Scroll box it says "For Mature audiences only. Contains violence, strong language, bried nudity and adult situations." So there is a warning.

Used to be that places would sort out between the more adult anime and normal anime... at least with some sort of sticker. I think only Blockbuster does that now.

Let me talk about the three parents.

Parent #1 is mother/father/legal guardian. This parent should watch over the child and keep Parent #2 in check.

Parent #2 is television, music, and all other forms of mainstream entertainment (including toys). This parent's job is to occupy the child when the child can think for itself and Parent #1 decides to throw a personal life into the balance along with their child.

Parent #3 is censorship. This parent's job is to keep Parent #2 in check, even though Parent #1 already has that job. While Parent #1 is finding child-appropriate material, Parent #3 is forcing adult material to be child-appropriate. Parent #3's intentions are good, but they don't care what this next person thinks...

Non-Parent is an adult with no child to take care of. While they might have left the home of Parent #1 when they got older, they still like to spend time with Parent #2. The problem is that Parent #3 still insists on censoring Parent #2. Non-Parent doesn't want or need Parent #3, so they have to go through extra lengths to get rid of them.

What's my point? That censorship sounds like a good idea, but it's job should be handled by Parent #1. There should be no parent #3.

Actually I did see the Ninja Scroll box,at Blockbuster, and I didn't see any warning. Some Blockbusters seperate the animes but alot don't. Some Blockbusters don't even carry anime anymore, only one in South Florida carries them, and they have really crappy animes there.
But there should've been some warning in the video itself, before the "Feature Presentation". It didn't need to be censored, but it needs a warning at least.
